Coco-Mat, Suite 417Recharge Your Batteries – Literally! This year’s Media Lounge can rescue you from Fall Market fatigue. Take a break from the festivities at Coco-Mat where plugs and power strips will be available to charge your devices and magazines will be available to read while you wait.

The DDB thanks Media Lounge host Coco-Mat and the following publications:

In anticipation of our 50th Anniversary we dove into industry archives, binge-read trade publications, and found ourselves pausing a little too often to appreciate vintage advertisements. Whether announcing their move to the D&D, capturing the changing times, or simply highlighting what makes their product superior, our tenants’ ads have always been worth a second look. Below you’ll find a selection of some of our favorite creative campaigns from the past 50 years.

The D&D Building turns 50! New York City, 1965 - the Beatles played Shea Stadium, the World’s Fair was in full swing and the famous Northeast Blackout brought the year to a close. The corner of 58th street and 3rd Avenue had seen the demolition of the elevated trains making way for a more beautiful neighborhood. The D&D opened with a 225 space parking garage and ceiling heights over 9’, something not seen in commercial properties for the past 20 years. The very first showrooms included John Stuart & John Widdcomb styled with Picassos and Mondrians, Stark Carpet, Duralee and Scalamandre. One year later, due to complete occupancy and an overwhelming demand for more space, the 59th street wing was added.

It is incredible to believe that many of the most famous decorators and designers of the last half of a century – Dorothy Drap er, her cousin, Sister Parish, Albert Hadley, Mark Hampton and Mario Buatta – have walked these halls. The building has also seen some amazing clients from First Ladies like Laura Bush and celebrities like Jessica Lange and the Olsen twins; all driven by the desire to shop the world’s leading design resource center.

As part of an industry that views history and archives as equally important to trends and innovation, we see our 50th anniversary as a time to look back on how far we have come and gaze optimis-tically into the future. When Charles Cohen rescued the D&D Building from foreclosure in 1996, it had only seen two previous owners. His ever-evolving legacy includes upgrades to the lobby, transforming the common areas and façade and adding the iconic double-faced mosaic clock on the corner of 58th and 3rd. Over the years the DDB has enjoyed continued success and, while many other design buildings have tried, there still is only one D&D Building.

The building currently leads a wide array of collaborations with the five major NYC design schools – FIT, NYSID, Parsons, Pratt and School of the Visual Arts – serving as an incubator where students are welcome to learn the professional side of the business through tours, internships, and events that inspire. Today’s students are the designers of the future and, since we plan to be here for another 50 years, they are very important to us. We would like to take this moment to thank our patrons; each one of you has played a part in our history and our success. It is with this in mind that we invite you to join us as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Decoration & Design Building.

In honor of the D&D Building’s 50th Anniversary, Go Design Go has been tapping talented designers like John Douglas Eason, Robin Baron, Young Huh and many more for their answers to a series of questions inspired by 60’s pop culture. We’ve highlighted some of the best responses below and we hope that you’ll visit us at godesigngo.com to view all of their groovy videos for yourself.
