Happy Belated Independence Day! What an amazing fi reworks show put on by

our Chamber Members and Celestial Display. Th en KSTAR Country put the icing on the cake with their simulcast of the event. Please see page 7 that recognizes everyone who made the 2014 Fireworks Over Lake Conroe possible.

Over 50% of the sponsorships came from our Board Members. What a great testament to their willingness to serve and support the community.

We are halfway through 2014 and your Chamber is on pace to have another great year. Our positive momentum has been driven by membership and our amazing events. Th ese important programs drive what we do, but none of it would be possible without our volunteers. A BIG THANKS to our Diplomats led by Don Spence with All-Star Catering, and all of our Committee and Special Events Volunteers. Th eir time and dedication is always appreciated.

As we gear up for the 2nd half of our year we are working on our Chamber Accreditation process. Aft er completing the process and receiving this distinction, hopefully in 2015, we will be the only accredited Chamber of Commerce in Montgomery County and only one of a few in the Southeast Texas region. Our Board and I feel that these standards set by the US Chamber of Commerce are standards we should not only meet, but exceed.

Enjoy July and this part of the summer as before you know it we will be playing golf and eating steak and lobster in October during Lobsterfest.

All the best,

What's happening in the Community?A look at the Greater Conroe Economic Development Council.

FAM Tour with Greater Houston PartnershipGCEDC hosted a FAM (familiarization) Tour organized by the

Greater Houston Partnership on June 7th.  Th e tour focused on Th e Woodlands and Conroe.  Four site selection consultants from three diff erent fi rms participated – three were from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and one was from Kansas City, MO.  While in Conroe, they were treated to lunch at the Black Walnut Café at Galaxy FBO.  Black Forest Ventures then took them on a helicopter tour of the ExxonMobil campus, Th e Woodlands, and Conroe/Lake Conroe.  Th ey also received

a driving tour of the Deison Technology Park and Conroe Park North.  We received really positive feedback about the tour and they were very impressed with everything that is happening in the area.

Ongoing SalesGCEDC have two land sales currently in Title in Conroe Park North

– one for 5.33 acres for a Bel gian polymer seal manufacturer and one for 33.18 acres for a leading supplier of distributed chemical products and services with company headquarters in Th e Woodlands.

Business LeadsGCEDC has handled 78 leads this fi scal year from various sources,

including the Governor’s Offi ce, Greater Houston Partnership, and direct leads from the commercial real estate community or companies themselves.  Of those, we have sent a response to 55 leads.  We currently have one project that we have received a contract on that has not yet entered Title and four active projects that we are on the short list for.  Business is booming in Conroe!

ICSC RECon 2014 RecapGCEDC & City Offi cials attended the 2014 International Council

of Shopping Centers’ RECon Las Vegas global convention in mid-May. Attendees included City Administrator Paul Virgadamo,

City Councilman Seth Gibson, GCEDC Deputy Director Danielle Scheiner, GCEDC Research Analyst/Retail Specialist Amber Blevins, and Downtown Property Owner Rodney Pool. Th e City of Conroe has been exhibiting at the convention since 2008.

RECon Las Vegas 2014 had 1,100 exhibitors and Conroe was proud to be one of them. Developers/landlords, retailers, franchisors/franchisees, lenders, private equity fi rms and other professionals came from all over the North America, Europe, South America and Asia to make things happen. Th ere were more than 33,000 attendees this year!

Th e purpose of Conroe representatives attending this annual conference is to attract retail business and developers to the area. We promote Conroe to hundreds of people at one time and bring more opportunities for our residents and community.

It was very impressive how many retailers stopped by our booth to mention that they have heard about the rapid growth in Conroe or that they have a business already here that is thriving.

Th e team came back with many leads and was overly pleased with the outcome. Marketing and exhibit space plans are already underway for 2015.

JULY 201413 JULYY 22200011411333 JULY 201413

Q. Why are you in business?A. I love business!  All aspects, regardless of what fi eld I work in.   I like getting up every

day and thinking to myself “What can I do diff erent?" or "What can I do today to help someone else?”

Q. Why are you in business?A. Th e main reason I am in this business is it off ers me to opportunity to work for myself.

I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, and therefore I have been exposed to a work ethic that most people are not accustomed to. I knew within weeks of starting my fi rst job at a Sonic Drive-In that I wanted to work for myself.

Q. Why are in this type of business?A. I have always been interested in technology, especially in the audio visual fi eld. Initially,

my weakness was in audio, so I decided to shadow a radio station to learn more. I soon realized that I could start my own station, and have it coincide with something else I liked to do: be involved in a community. So with this realization, Lone Star Internet Radio - "Montgomery Counties Community Radio Station" - was born.

Q. What is your education and work background?

A. I graduated college from Abilene Christian University with a degree in Electronic Media (Radio, Television, Film, Web, Marketing). However, I have been called the renaissance man when it comes to the audio visual fi eld, since I have had so many diff erent jobs. From crane operator to voice over mixer, I never shy away from an opportunity to learn something new.

Q. How long have you been in business? A. Lone Star Internet Radio has been in business for 1 ½ years.

Q. How did you get started in this business?  A. I shadowed at a radio station, and eventually got involved with the IT side of their

business. I started to learn and understand the back end of the radio world. From there my entrepreneurial family helped encourage me to start up my own station.

Q. How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business?A. Curiosity. I received my fi rst camera when around the age of 12, and I wanted to learn

everything about the device. When it came time to make my next camera purchase, I was extremely excited, because it meant I could fi nally disassemble my fi rst one. Th at curiosity, my being involved with people of similar interest, and reading anything I could fi nd on audio video technology all helped to improve my skill set.

Q. How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted how you conduct business?

A. It is the heart of my business. Without it, Lone Star Internet Radio wouldn’t be here!

Q. Do you have employees? How many?  A. Volunteers and Hosts make up the station. In total we have over 20+ people involved with

the station. If anyone wants to learn about the radio world, they are invited to join us!

Q. What is the need that your business exists to satisfy? A. To promote community news, events, weather, and music. We are here to serve

Montgomery County.

Q. How does your company diff erentiate itself? A. Our availability. Anyone is welcome to visit the studio and be on the air. Th is station is

meant for the residents of Montgomery County. So advertisers, hosts, guests and DJ’s are all from the local area.

Q. Who are the key players in the business?A. Th e Community!!!
