REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR

THE 22nd SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME

One thing that Scripture has made abundantly clear is

that God’s ways are not man’s. Over and over again, mankind experiences events that pose the question, “Why?”.

I am certain that many people who have experienced natural disasters and unexpected turmoil have searched

their souls trying to bring forth rationale that would justify these painful situations. Searching to no avail, people just

have to realize a few things. First, we need to remember that mankind introduced evil and sorrow into the world with the sin of our first parents. Secondly, in the end, God

knows what is best and those that trust in Him will have a glorious outcome. Finally, disasters cannot be totally

eliminated. They are a fact of life – Life that comes from God and returns back to Him. Keeping these facts mind will

enable human beings to survive the seemingly unsurvivable.

In the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Jeremiah poses this human reaction to disasters. This great prophet of God

cogitates the problem and concludes that, despite his instinctual tendency to blame God for the prophet’s ….

REFLECTIONS on the READINGS for THIS SUNDAY , CONT INUED

Deacon Rob

… troubles and his desire to quit prophesizing, he simply cannot stop. By fulfilling God’s Will, the prophet has opened himself up to ridicule and derision. It was part of the job. A part that Jeremiah did not anticipate. Originally, Jeremiah thought that being the messenger of the God should afford him great status and admiration. Would not the messenger of the Divine be treated with great respect? After all, the Omniscient and the Omnipotent would have his back. Who would dare refuse to listen? However, just the opposite occurred. Jeremiah is persecuted and hunted! Instead of quitting and becoming “one of the crowd”, Jeremiah admits that there is a burning fire within him that has to be let out. This “fire” is nothing less than the Spirit of God, proving that man does not will prophecy by himself; rather, true prophecy comes from God. It is this “fire” that transforms and supports the prophet through many humbling and painful experiences into a messenger of the Divine. God does, indeed, “have his back” but it is not in the way that Jeremiah expected.

It is this same transformation that Saint Paul preaches to the Romans. The Romans live in a society that emphasizes the present with special attention to accruing wealth, power, pleasure, and social status. The Roman society based itself upon the family unit. They meticulously micro-managed their lives to raise their status through marriage agreements and alliances constructed at banquets. Alliances were the foundation for power and wealth. It was not unusual for a father to use his children to further extend his power in the Empire. Fortunes were made and lost due to these machinations. Paul preaches a new message in which he instructs his followers to sacrifice their lives for the greater glory of God. Through this method, God will transform them and make their life good, pleasing and perfect. The Divine Life will become a “fire” within them that will bring true wealth and success. This is only accomplished through sacrifice, agape love, and not alliances. Its fruits were in juxtaposition to the world’s. Thus, the Christian message was contrary to the Roman World and its definition of success, wealth, pleasure, and power.

It is sacrifice, agape love, that is the theme of today’s

Gospel by Matthew. In today’s reading, Jesus explains to his apostles that he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, to be tried, and to be crucified. It will be only after he is finally raised from the dead that His Glory will be revealed. Peter, who had just been given the “keys to the Kingdom”, proudly boasts that will never happen.

Peter claims they will fight and even die for Jesus! As is evident, Peter does not yet fully understand the role of the Messiah and is thinking like a man of the world. Jesus immediately rebukes Peter and tells him that he is thinking incorrectly like man – not God. Christ addresses him as “Satan”, the tempter, because Jesus knows he must endure the Cross. Jesus is offered the world without the cross by

Satan in the Temptation in the Desert but has refused it. Now, Peter is doing the Satan’s will by reiterating the offer. Christ reminds all that in the end, God will triumph, if faith in Him is kept. Only through self-sacrifice is Jesus able to “release” the Spirit or “fire” within Him. It is this “fire” that will transform and purify the world. Accepting this future, the Christ will reveal and complete the Messianic task – justification and redemption for mankind.

Today’s message is one of faith. Faith that cannot be contained and must be professed. This same “burning fire” must be our guiding instrument in life. While sin or evil may appear to be winning, it is not. God’s plan for His prophets, and we are they, is to call back humanity to the Divine by pointing out the Messiah and the great mercy He offers. His sacrifice must be completed in ours. Yes, like Jeremiah and Christ, we are asked to bear our cross, united to the One who bore His. Our mission may not be easy. It will be fraught with suffering and self-denial but it will lead to great joy. For His Spirit burns within us and we cannot and must not be silent. Being co-heirs, anointed with the Chrism of Salvation, and created Priest, Prophet and King, we must serve our fellow man and perfect God’s creation in our own time and place. Jesus lives and walks with us so that this great miracle can take place. The Kingdom of God is at hand through the persistence of our Faith in God.

SAINT OF THE WEEK: FIACRE

September 1

Fiacre was born in Ireland and that he sailed over into France so that he might devote himself to God, unknown to the world. Bishop Faro of Meaux gave him a solitary dwell-ing in a forest. Fiacre cleared the ground of trees and briers, made himself a

cell with a garden, built an oratory in honor of the Blessed Virgin, and made a hospice for travelers. Many turned to him for advice, and the poor, for relief. In his hospice, he entertained all comers, serving them with his own hands, and sometimes miraculously restored to health those that were sick. He never allowed any woman to enter the enclosure of his hermitage or his chapel. Queen Anne of France, a frequent visitor, was content to offer up her prayers outside the door, amongst the other pilgrims. The fame of Saint Fiacre's miracles of healing continued after his death and crowds visited his shrine for centuries. His relics at Meaux are invoked against all sorts of physical ills. He is also a patron saint of gardeners and of the cab-drivers of Paris.
