ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & FOUNDER
SEASON ELEVEN 2015 - 2016
WELCOME TO THE 2015 - 2016 ELEVENTH SEASON OF THE
DE ANGELIS VOCAL ENSEMBLEDear friends,
This season we are expanding and growing in a number of ways. Our first program of the season on October 24th is a concert collabo-ration with the Norbertine Fathers from St. Michael’s Abbey. Membersof the Abbey Schola will sing Gregorian Chants as a touchstone for aprogram of motets from the Renaissance and contemporary genres. OurChristmas program on December 5th incorporates sounds from theSouthwest in a program accompanied by Native American flute and clas-sical guitar. In March we expand in both venue and repertoire. Join usfor a concert of music from Mantua; music in Latin, Hebrew and Italianby Claudio Monteverdi and Salamone Rossi Hebreo, in the Cultural Cen-ter of Christ Cathedral, designed by famed architect Richard Meier. Ourfinal program of the season on May 14th will be hosted at the new churchat Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach. This concert is an in-ternational journey exploring the influence dance has on choral music.
We are continuing our educational outreach program with teach-ers, students, parents and administrators of the Newport Mesa SchoolDistrict with our Mission Music program. This innovative programblends music from Alta California with the fourth grade social studiescurriculum. More information about this groundbreaking program can befound on our website.

Our subscription season begins with an experience of the creation of no-tated music. Ancient cultures used symbols (notations) to visually repre-sent aurally-understood melodies, and, as most varied and complexcompositions were performed a cappella, sacred texts were set to music tobecome chants. Join us in our musical collaboration with the NorbertineFathers of Orange County’s own St. Michael’s Abbey as they sing Grego-rian Chant, echoed by the de Angelis Ensemble’s Renaissance and Con-temporary motets on these ancient themes.

TFew audiences are aware of the musical synergy present at the Mantuacourt in the late sixteenth century. Monteverdi’s duties for the Gonzagacourt included the composition of madrigals and incidental music to en-tertain the court. Jewish composer Salamone Rossi worked alongside Mon-teverdi, composing madrigals and Hebrew music for the temple in aRenaissance motet style. Join the de Angelus ensemble for an evening at theGonzaga court and experience a delightful program of the sacred and thesecular.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
We are incredibly excited and fortunate to be continuing our work with students, teachers,
parents and administrators from the Newport Mesa Unified School District. Our MISSION MUSIC pro-gram integrates the Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, andEnglish Language Arts disciplines through the study and performanceof music from the California Missions.
Music played a central role in the daily life of Alta California, from itsinception in 1769 and the founding of San Diego under the guidanceof Junıpero Serra, through the secularization of the missions and be-ginning of the “American” period in the mid-nineteenth century. It per-meated most sacred and social gatherings; the singing of the Mass andsongs of praise was an obligatory part of mission life, and social func-tions revolved around festive music making.
Throughout the school year students work with the de Angelis singersto examine, study and perform music from Alta California.
For more information about this innovative program, please check-out our educational outreach tab on our website atwww.deangelisensemble.org.
