DEAR PARTNERS IN MISSION,

As you know, De Marillac Academy offers a unique educational experience focused on meeting the needs of a community’s underserved children. This is accomplished through an advanced network of partnerships–with parents, nonprofits, corporations, benefactors, volunteers and the local government. As evidenced in the 2015-16 Honor Roll of Donors, these partnerships are not only helping students achieve greater levels of wellness and success, but they are also revitalizing a community long marked by economic hardship and blight.

I would like to highlight one new partnership last year: a team of researchers from St. Mary’s College Kalmanovitz School of Education. This talented team is conducting a study with

De Marillac Academy as part of a doctoral research project. One segment of the study compares De Marillac Academy’s unique school environment with contemporary discussions in educational psychology. I am excited to report one of the preliminary outcomes that sets De Marillac apart from many urban educational organizations: De Marillac Academy students are not “at risk”—when a student’s educational assets are overshadowed by the idea that they are victims of their environment. Rather, our students are “at promise”—when each student and family is valued for the intellectual, social and cultural capital they contribute to the whole learning community. This is the result of De Marillac’s faculty and staff, who employ an empowering, forward thinking and strengths-based model of education. We are thrilled to have research that supports and celebrates the collective efforts

MAS UNIDOSONE FAMILY PASSING THE DREAM ON


Maria Flores, current and alumni parent of De Marillac Academy, has lived in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco for 16 years. While attending Mass at St. Boniface Church in 2001, she heard an announcement for a new school that would be opening up in the neighborhood. When her twin sons, Marvin and Irving, were old enough, they enrolled at De Marillac Academy in 2005. She remarked,

“It was the best choice I made because De Marillac changed our lives.”

Marvin ’08 went on the attend Archbishop Riordan High School, followed by graduating from WyoTech in Fremont with an electrician’s diploma. He is now an apprentice working full-time with an electrical contractor. Someday, he aspires to be his own boss as an electrician.

Irving ’08 matriculated to Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep and is currently enrolled at Chabot College in Hayward. He works at the campus bookstore and aspires to become the first DMA graduate to return as a teacher. He said, “… because I’ve grown up here in the Tenderloin district, surrounded by addiction, violence, and poverty, I see myself coming back to teach and share my experiences with the next generation that is to come.”

Irving demonstrated this commitment to De Marillac and the Tenderloin community this past summer by volunteering with our summer school program. He worked with current DMA students on a daily basis and provided individual academic support and mentoring.

Maria noted that the support DMA continues to provide would not happen if her children attended other schools. She is joyful that her daughter, Cece ’17, is able to continue along the path paved by her older brothers. Waiting in the wings to enroll at DMA is her youngest daughter, Camilla. Maria added, “she cannot wait to wear the same De Marillac uniform that her sister, CeCe, wears.”

Maria said, “I think De Marillac is a special place, and I am so grateful to be a part of this big family, all working hard together to build new successes. We are a family that is ‘mas unidos’ and we are always there for each other. De Marillac is the same way; they are like family.”
