• There are different kinds of words in English. These are called the parts of speech.

• Noun: Words which are used as names of persons, animals, place or thing.

Ex: Rama, Rani, girl, boy, army, tiger, Monday.

The proper Noun is the special name of a particular person or place.

Ex: Rama, Bombay, Ganga, Tajmahal.

A Noun, which does not point out any particular person, place or thing but is common to all persons or things of the same class or kind.

Ex: boy, girl, city, river, town, god.

When a noun stand for a collection of things or persons, considered as one complete whole.

Ex: army, bundle, bunch, chain, class, gang.

Ex: bread, rice, cotton, gold, soap.

An abstract noun is a word that names a quality, state, action, teaching, arts etc., it denotes a thing which we can neither see, nor touch but we can only think of.

Ex: Quality - kindness, honesty, braver.

Action - theft, judgment, laughter.

State - Poverty, childhood, kingship.

• The preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation to some other words. Prepositions are used before nouns or pronouns.

Ex: across, above, after, about, among, beside, buy, before, between, behind, below, down, during, from, for, near, in, into, of, over, since, through, up, upon, with, without, on, under, to, at.
