More than half a million satisfied customers can’t be wrong. From the Arctic to Antarctica, from Maine to California, revolutionary Toyotomi sealed combustion, direct-vent heating systems (Toyostove, Laser and Oil Miser models) are the most fuel-efficient, energy- saving heating systems available. They use up to 50 percent less fuel for heating the same area and have substantially lower emissions (up to 50 percent less CO²) than traditional oil-fired heating systems. That, along with their whisper-quiet comfort, safety and dependability are why they are the most popular, best-selling vented heating systems in the rugged, rural environment of Alaska. Toyotomi direct-vent heating systems provide all the comfort and convenience of central heating in one small, suitcase-sized unit at a fraction of the cost to purchase and operate. They are easy to install and require no chimney, ductwork, plumbing or electrical work. In most cases, these units can heat an entire home. They are also the perfect solution for those hard-to-heat rooms or areas all too common in many homes. This is especially true of older homes and those with additions where a central heating system is just not enough. Now, even problem areas can be made comfortable at an affordable price. In addition, Toyotomi direct-vent heating systems are ideal for garages, basements, summer homes and hunting cabins and are certified for installation in mobile homes and manufactured housing. Efficient and Economical With these products, consumers get much more heat for their money than with other conventional, oil-fired heating systems, as Toyotomi vented heating systems are much less expensive to purchase, install and operate. The cost to operate a Toyotomi heater is so economical that owners enjoy annual savings of up to 50 percent more than when using conventional heating systems. REE Staff Spotlight

Andy Azelton

Andy Azelton is the financial manager for REE. Originally from the mid-Michigan area, he graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2000 and moved to Alaska in 2005. He has a beautiful wife and two great boys who keep him busy with football and karate. Andy enjoys riding his Harley, playing softball, hiking, snowshoeing and most of what Alaska has to offer. He considers his move to the state to be the best decision he ever made: “Someone was definitely looking out for me.”

John Green

John Green was born and raised in Anchorage, and after a year of mowing lawns for a golf course, he joined the REE family in the shipping clerk position. In his free time he likes to play football and basketball as much as the weather will allow. John is not a fan of cold weather, so he knows how important it is to have parts for heaters to run. Don’t be afraid of placing a big order; he will pack and ship it out to get those heaters running as soon as possible.

Lena Shuck

Lena Shuck is the new inventory control clerk for REE. Prior to joining the REE team, Lena worked in customer service for a veterinary office, where she found great joy in providing not only customer service to people but also to many, many furry animals. She grew up in Anchorage and has never had that nagging feeling to leave. Lena loves everything outdoors; if she is not walking her crazy, blue-eyed black lab/husky mix, Freeway, then you will find her camping, fishing, hiking or skiing. She is happy to be part of the REE team and looks forward to meeting and helping our customers.

If you have a Toyostove or OM-22/23 that has no display output from the indicator lamp circuit board, perform the following tests:

1. Verify proper power at the wall. You should have 120VAC between hot and neutral and between hot and ground. 2. Verify proper power at the transformer (you can put your test leads in the back of the plug, right alongside the wires).

The primary (K) should have 120VAC. The secondaries should have 140VAC between the two yellow wires and 14VAC between the two blue wires.

3. Check the fuses on the main circuit board. With the fuses removed from the board, you should read continuity through them (meter set to Ω).

4. Check for loose, disconnected or pinched wiring. 5. Unplug the revolution sensor from the main circuit board. If the display lights up, the problem is a short circuit in

the revolution sensing circuit. 6. If everything above checks out, replace the lamp circuit board then the main circuit board.

Tech Notes: No Display Tests

When we heat with wood, we are simply tapping into the natural carbon cycle in which CO2 flows from the atmosphere to the forest and back. The key to ecologically sound and sustainable wood energy use is to ensure that the forest remains healthy, maintains a stable level of variously aged trees and provides a good habitat for a diversity of other species, both plants and animals. Ensuring there is a healthy fuel wood market is key to a sustainable forestry plan. Landowners have more incentive to remove low-value trees and manage their forests sustainably knowing there is a market for this low-value material.

The combustion of wood produces small particles that are called PM2.5. These particles are 30 times smaller than a human hair. They can aggravate certain lung and heart diseases and have been linked with health problems such as asthma. Sources of PM2.5 include combustion under various forms, such as the ones used for cars and trucks, wood heating, as well as other industrial processes. While it is true that old technology, like open fireplaces and simple heaters, could not burn the wood completely, the new generation of wood-burning appliances are designed to burn particles. They produce almost no visible smoke. The vast majority of appliances sold on the market now meet the particles emissions limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as the Canadian standard CSA B415.1. For example, the EPA limits emissions of certified wood-heating appliances to no more than 7.5 grams per hour. In comparison, older conventional wood appliances average 40 grams per hour.

The EPA limits emissions of certified wood-heating appliances to no more than 7.5 grams per hour. In comparison, older conventional wood appliances average 40 grams per hour.

As for appliances burning wood pellets, they have among the lowest particulate emissions of all solid-fuel-burning appliances. They are manufactured from waste products and other renewable resources right here in North America and represent a huge source of heating fuel from material that would otherwise be sent to landfills.

When considering a Toyotomi Oil Miser water heater for either hydronic heating or domestic hot water production, water quality should be carefully considered. Chlorine/chloride levels are particularly important, as chlorine is one of the few elements that can cause rapid corrosion in the stainless steel heat exchangers of the OM-148 and OM-180. Other components, such as the thermistors, can be affected as well. Corrosion can include rusting, pitting and cracking of the stainless steel, failed thermistors and leaking heat exchangers. This type of corrosion damage due to poor water quality is not covered under Toyotomi’s warranty.

Stainless steel, a chromium/nickel steel alloy, is well known for its resistance to rust and corrosion. It maintains this remarkable property from the chromium in the steel reacting with environmental oxygen to create a very, very thin surface film of chromium oxide (only 10 to 100 atoms thick) that protects the underlying metal. However, if chloride ions in the water are above 50ppm, they will cause this protective layer to fail. Without this protective film, the underlying steel alloy can rust and corrode just as regular steel does, leading to premature failure of the heat exchanger or other components. Oil Miser water heaters should never be installed if the water exceeds the following maximum levels (mg/L is equivalent to ppm):

Tech Notes:Chlorine vs. Stainless Steel

While most water contains some level of chlorides, there a few things that can increase the chloride content significantly. Residential water softeners, commercial/industrial water-softening processes and the salting of icy roads can contribute to excessive levels of chlorides in the groundwater. If there is any suspicion of bad water quality, a water analysis should be performed to determine exact levels. Chloride test strips are also commercially available for home use.

Another factor to consider is the amount of free (residual) chlorine (Cl2), usually derived from sodium hypochlorite (commonly known as bleach), which is added to water to kill bacteria. Chlorine is a very potent oxidizer (the reason it kills bacteria), and high levels of free chlorine will accelerate the chloride corrosion of stainless steel.

REE will be deploying a new accounting software by mid-summer. We are in the initial stages of laying the informational groundwork for our customer and vendor base. This means that we are reviewing the existing information that we have and updating it when needed. If you receive a call or email from one of our staff, please don’t be alarmed. If an account has been around for a good number of years and nothing has changed, then we plan to double check with our clients to make sure all information is still accurate. If you know that your information has recently changed, please feel free to update us at any time. Also, we are hoping to take a step forward with emailing more of our statements, invoices and other business-related items. Take time to think about what email address(es) you would like us to use if we don’t already email items to you. This is not a requirement, but it can help to quickly and accurately relay account information.
