RNPW President

Living in Northern Illinois or Southwest Michigan most of my life, I have always looked forward to spring. It is my favorite of the four seasons! Green leaves sprout up from the dark earth, often among remnants of snow. The days grow warmer little by little and longer – often adding 2 to 3 minutes of sunlight per day. If we get snow, it doesn’t last long because the sun is closer to this part of the earth and warmer. Ahhhhhh.

But then we had the last two weeks! At first, the snow was melting at a good pace; days in the 60’s and even a 70 sprinkled in; buds on bushes and trees were swelling; tulips, daffodils and crocus were at least getting their leaf tips out; and even the calendar said it was Spring! But Mother Nature had other ideas.

We got more SNOW – around 5” of SNOW! I was almost OK with it. Not bad I thought. The weather people are predicting 3/4” of rain, maybe even with a thunder storm. As I went to sleep that night, I heard rain on the window and knew most of the snow would be a memory by morning. The next day I opened the curtains and - NO! Nearly all the snow was still there! How could this be? It is SPRING!

Sometimes life is like our Spring. We are on a path toward a certain outcome. Early indicators support this path. Even the organizational chart says this will happen. Then something unexpected occurs. It wasn’t supposed to be that way! What can you do to get back on track? Does changing the course involve a difficult conversation? Do you find difficult conversations uncomfortable to the point of avoidance?

Yes, Spring will be here for good – sooner or later – and our goals will be accomplished or we will regroup. But unlike Spring, we can educate ourselves to give that needed advantage.

RNPW Member recognized with YWCA’s Mentorship Award at Leader Luncheon

Maleeah Cuevas, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Director, and Investment Advisor Representative of Klaas Financial, was honored on March 2 with the YWCA-Rockford’s annual Leader Luncheon Mentorship Award. Following are some excerpts from the nomination:

“In business and at home, Maleeah Cuevas continuously encourages women to be educated, be enthusiastic about life and be heard. She has led education seminars and events for clients, associates and others, she founded and leads ‘Women in Motion,’ a women’s group meant to bring women together to encourage each other. To all around her, especially women, she is a mentor, a teach, an advisor, a cheerleader and a friend.

“Maleeah is not afraid to ‘think outside the box’ and try something new – and she always takes the opportunity to teach. She leads by example, by being humble and truly

rejoicing in others’ successes, speaking up with confidence and composure, balancing work and home and not being afraid to say no.

“She is a natural born leader but she works very hard at it and does not take any of her roles for granted. She is constantly encouraging women to be advocates for themselves and to learn from each other’s successes.

“Maleaah is involved with many community organizations in the Rockford area. She is a current member and past president of the Alpine Kiwanis Club, serving on many committees including Brat Days. She is an active member of Heartland Church, volunteering as a greeter and usher, participating in ShareFest, and contributing to many special projects. She has/is volunteering for the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, the Rockford Dance Company, Rockford Area Youth Symphony Orchestra, past president of RYSO Boosters, Chamber Business Women’s Council, RNPW, Rockford Rescue Mission, Remedies, TIP Club and local school activities.

“She is constantly seeking out ways to improve herself and to encourage others to do the same. She lost her parents at a young age and I think that made her determined not to waste one moment of one day. Maleeah is the type of person that others look up to with respect, admiration and gratitude.”

The Rockford Network of Professional Women is pleased to congratulate Maleeah Cuevas on being named the YWCA’s Mentorship Award recipient for 2015

Women as Agents of Change - In Volunteerism

Join us for a special presentation by Pat Ambrose, Executive Director of Veteran’s Drop-In Center and Kathy Ferrero, Executive Director of Jeremiah Development.

The Veteran’s Drop-In Center provides a safe, supportive and caring social environment for veterans and their families to receive help transitioning and continuing to adapt to post-service life. Volunteers assist with many aspects and reap emotional rewards.

Jeremiah Development remains committed to one square mile just north of downtown in its efforts to promote the well-being of that neighborhood. Come learn how small efforts can still mean success.

Come learn more about these - and other – “quiet” nonprofits in our community and how you can help.
