Lake of the Ozarks

By Matt Blansett His shock of white hair was never more than an inch long. Steely blue eyes danced with life, although wa-tered down from the intensity they had blazed with in his youth. His worn calloused hands told tales that he never shared, and his fingers were knotty and twisted. His palms were abrasive and rough, like shaking hands with a belt sander. A cane helped him make his way in this world, a plain affair made of polished wood, without a single piece of adornment. His true height and weight would be hard to guess, because age had slightly sagged him, and I never saw the man when he wasn’t wearing bib overalls. These things describe the man, but descriptions do not always tell the entire story. Emmet McCowan had a degenera-tive muscle disease that affected him in

a very strange manner. He had lost control of the muscles that hold the eyelids open. If he opened his eyes with his fingers, they would stay open, but any upsetting of his head would shut them. A good chuckle at a well told joke; ‘clunk’ his eyes would shut. If he were to nod his agreement in

conversation; ‘clunk’, his eyes would close. A swift movement of the hand, and those steely blues would come shining through again, until the next gesture or laugh closed them tight. He still drove his car, even in his physical state. The unknowing observer would think he was driv-ing with one hand on the wheel and one hand on his forehead. He looked as if he were in deep thought or concentrating on a seri-ous matter as he drove along in his rusty old blue and white station wagon. Those who knew him knew he was only using the hand on his forehead to hold his eyes open while he drove. Thousands drove past him not knowing the look of extreme con-centration was the only

thing that allowed Mr. McCowan to see where he was going. These unique issues placed Em-met McCowan apart from the regular members of the congregation at the small country church I attended. However, his most distinguishing feature was his utter lack of self pity. Speaking with other members of his generation will usually give the listener a laundry list of physical problems. My own grandparents can carry on for hours over their declining health, and their arthritic bones. They can wax ecstatic over the vast amount of medicines and pills they must take daily, or about ailments and issues plaguing their lives. Many elderly people seem to take a kind of comfort or pleasure from shar-ing their pain, but not Emmet. I often asked him how he was feel-ing, or if he were getting along alright and Mr. McCowan would always reply with: “Fine,” or “Not too shabby.” He never took the opportunity, even when the door was open, to bemoan his life or complain about his problems. Obviously he had issues that he was dealing with, but he never felt com-pelled to share them. He never used his health, or lack thereof, to bring attention to himself. Most advances were turned, and he would be asking about your mother, or if your father had his corn planted, or how school was going. In all my years of knowing the man, I never once heard him complain

about his life or his problems. Emmet McCowan fought in World War II against the Germans in France. He was a husband and a father after the war. He built a home in rural Missouri where he lived out his years with his wife, Violet. He shared many stories with me about his experience in the war, his life on the farm, and marriage. We told each other countless jokes. I loved to make him laugh, and he was a worldly man who appreciated a good chuckle…even if it did make his eyes clunk shut. He told me quite a few jokes as well, and we got together every Sunday between Sunday school and the service to share stories and a pinch of Beechnut. Emmet McCowan chewed tobacco in church. It wasn’t endorsed by the church, but being the eldest deacon in the con-gregation has its advantages. He asked me on one occasion if I chewed tobacco, and I admitted that I did take a pinch now and then. He offered me a dip, and I asked if he thought it was a good idea, chewing in church? “Son, God hates a coward.” He replied to me. So I took a pinch, and we sat on a pew having a good discussion Sunday we shared some Beechnut in the pew of my boyhood church, but I recall his statement that day as if it happened last weekend. Everyone we know on a personal level makes an impression upon us. Some brush a light coat of them-selves on our lives, while others chisel something deeper into our core. Emmet McCowan left this world a better place, and he made his mark on me. If I could choose what to take from knowing Mr. McCowan, I would hope to share his love of humor, to possess his complete lack of self pity, and to always remember: “Son, God hates a coward.” Sadly, I missed the old man’s fu-neral, but I would bet he wore those denim overall bibs to his grave.

Our Own Pawn Star: By Lee McCain

Be on the lookout for a bright red 2010 Grand Sport Corvette when you’re driving the streets of Lake Ozark, Missouri, and when you spot it screaming down the road make sure to tip your hat to Richard Brown and his canine friends, a Red Pomeranian named Elizabeth and a gorgeous pure white German Shepherd called Crystal. Sure as anything they’ll be com-ing or going from Richard’s Relic Shack, a museum quality high-end collectibles establishment that has been in business for over a quarter of a century. “Every day my customers tell me I should charge admission to see all of the fine merchandise we carry,”

the affable septuagenarian said during our interview. “We carry an extremely diversified inventory ranging from swords, knives, fighting weapons, Native American tribal relics, and of course guns and other valuables of interest to the col-lector.” Brown also deals in precious metals, high quality coins and currencies, “and finer things like antique glassware; basi-cally, we have something for everybody here.”

A Remarkable His-tory

Richard Brown enjoyed a career as a civil service employee working in defense, and in 1960 he began attend-ing gun and collectible shows where he

1312A Treasure of High End Collectibles & Museum Quality Wares Worth a Visitdealt and traded on weekends and other down time he had away from his day job. Brown and his wife, Marilyn (who passed away a few years ago) parlayed that success into the retail store he has operated out of for the past twenty-five years. In addition to the collectibles side of the business, the Brown’s em-barked on one of the oldest and most respected businesses in the world: Pawn brokering. “We’ve been pawnbrokers for many years,” Brown related, “and while it’s always been a good and steady busi-ness, I’ve never seen it quite like it has been during the recent economic times we’ve seen.” Pawn brokering at its core is a very straightforward exchange. A person in need of some immediate cash can bring something of value to the broker, who will offer up a loan based uponthe value of the object. The broker holds the item in pawn until the owner pays off the loan plusinterest, and then the owner reclaims the possession that was held in pawn. “Pawn brokering provides an hon-est, reliable service and helps people who would otherwise have no means to secure a short term loan,” Brown says. He is also quick to add that the interest rates are much lower than what a bank would charge on a typical credit card. “Way lower!” Brown also notes that since the debut of the A&E network’s Pawn Stars television series, the pub-lic’s perception of what pawn brokers do has gained favor. “We provide our customers with fair-ness, honesty, and integrity at the high-est level,” Brown says, “and that’s what our customers tell us every day.”

Precious Metals

Brown is especially proud of the coins, currencies, and precious metals part of the business. Richard’s Relic Shack is offering something that Brown and Tammy Greer, his store manager for the past decade, believes the public is going to be very excited about.

In fact, it’s worth a phone call to Brown or Greer so they can explain all of the details, but in a nutshell cus-tomers can bring their precious metals or coins to the store and obtain a de-termined value for the item against the market price for the precious metal. “Then,” according to Brown, “we’ll hold the coin or the metal for 90 days. The customer can retrieve the item if they like with adjustments for the value of the piece, plus a small fee. We

think, this will really be something our customers will appreciate.” Brown says that he can even negoti-ate extensions past the 90 days should the customer need the extra time. “We like to do everything we can to let our customers know that we’re on their side and that we value them above all else.” To visit Richard’s Relic Shack you’ll need to get yourself down to 1192 Bag-nell Dam Boulevard in Lake Ozark.

There’s no Web site, e-mail, Face-book page, or cell phone. “I don’t even have a computer,” Brown chuckles. “I’ve managed for 75 years without one, and I figure I can go a little longer without all those gadgets.” Oh, he does answer the telephone at (573) 365-6062. And when you talk to him you’ll quickly realize that the truest value at this unique and amazing store is Rich-ard Brown himself.

In the early decades of Lake of the Ozarks history there were many “char-acters” in business at the Lake. Old timers like to recall Quillie Hunter, a quirky native of the Osage Beach area who dabbled in real estate and many other pursuits. Quillie predicted that a day would come when highway frontage along 54 in Osage Beach would bring $1,000 a foot. He was laughed at and called “crazy Qullie.” But Quillie had the last laugh. That day came and went and is now well into the past. There was the Okie from Oklahoma, Tex Bemis, who tried everything from photographing people on his collec-tion of stuffed animals like buffalo, to operating excursion boats, roadside food stands, cafes and the Ozark Water Ski Thrill Show. He had a roadside barbecue place with food served from a covered wagon. He had a sign painter decorate the can-vas and the painter mistakenly spelled the word “sandwiches” as “sandwich-es.” Tex loved it and kept it just the way it was! There was Larry Albright, the cat lover who kept so many cats at home most people wouldn’t enter his house. He had a wooden leg and was often called “Halfbright” but he was a shrewd businessman and did well with his gift shops. He billed himself “King of the Sou-venirs” and came to own many pieces of valuable property around the Lake. The list goes on but this story is about Harry Frack who was born near Columbus Junction, Iowa, in 1882. As a young man he followed con-struction work in the oil fields of Illinois and Oklahoma then returned to Iowa to run a mercantile business. About 1929 or 1930 he bought a farm near Fortuna and would have tried farming if he had not visited old Bag-nell during the dam construction period. Bagnell was a boom town and it inspired him to open a meat market and grocery store in Damsite, the construc-tion-workers town that existed below

the dam for just two years. His business did exceptionally well. With the dam’s completion and the demise of Damsite, he married Olive Cromer and invested his money in an acre of land in Osage Beach alongHighway 54 where Walmart is located today. He vowed he was going to put as many businesses as was physically pos-sible on that one acre of land and call it “Frack’s Acre.” At the time there were no otherbusinesses even close to him on either side of the highway. He was “out in the woods” as people said and predicted he’d go broke in no time at all. But Harry persisted and within a few years had done exactly what he said and his business enterprises boomed. Frack’s Acre included a barber shop, meat market, grocery store, pool hall, ice and cold storage facility, beer parlor, café, pottery shop, sandwich shop and a barber shop. The pottery shop structure was unique and fashioned of native rock. His wife, Olive, died in January 1943, and in October 1944, Harry mar-ried Ida Graves of Camdenton. Harry retired in 1947 and died in October 1950. His widow continued to operate his businesses for a number of years. The unique architecture of the pot-tery shop and the twin arches of the café and meat market, so reminiscent of McDonald’s Restaurant arches, were landmarks along the highway and lasted well into the 1960s. These early day “characters” have all left a legacy that now livens up the pages of history at Lake of theOzarks.

17Hargis Dinwiddie Masonry since 1976

In Hargis's younger years he always wanted to be a bricklayer. His first years in the construction line of work he was as a laborer, work-ing for his brother-in-law Alfred Kemp-ker. After laboring for about 1-1/2 years he started laying brick for him as a union bricklayer this was around 1960. Then in 1964 he got a job with Roy Scheperle Construction Company as a improver bricklayer. The following year he became a journeyman (skilled bricklayer). In the years to follow work got scarce for union workers so he decided to go out on his own. For several years he did work on his own doing whatever small job he could find (fireplaces, flues) just whatever. Then in 1976 he and his wife Ilene decided to start their own business. Hargis Dinwiddie Masonry Construc-tion began with himself and just a few employees. The first job his company completed was for Gail Enloe (Enloe Aluminum) in Eldon. Over the years he has completed sev-eral jobs in and around the Eldon area. To name a few US Bank-Eldon, Eldon Upper Elementary School, Eldon High School Additions, Eldon First Baptist Church Additions. Hargis's construction company's work is spread through out Missouri, trying to stay within 150 mile radius of

Eldon. The company has been as far away as Manhatten, Kansas where they completed the masonry work on a Walmart Store there. His com-pany has been known to have as many as 80 employ-ees at one time with as many as 8 projects going at one time. Hargis's company is family owned and operated with 3 of his children and 1 grandchild involved in the company business.

His company specializes in the laying of brick, block and caststone, primarily on commercial projects.

He is known to do residential work if time allows. Hargis believes in quality work and making the customer satisfied. Hargis at the age of 74 still remains an active part of the Business. He is still estimating projects, order-ing materials for projects and deals with day to day business matters. His daughter believes at the age of 74 he has a better mind than she does.

Hargis’s company is family owned and operated with three of his children and one

grandchild involved in the company business.

Edited by Lee McCain

The newly designed Volkswagen Beetle was the darling of the New York International Auto Show. The sleek, more masculine Beetle is not just a new version of an old car; it’s part of a new strategy. Germany-based Volkswagen has a long history in the U.S. market — 55 years to be exact. Most of us have a connection to VW cars; remember Herbie? It’s been a long time since Herbie the Love Bug drove his way into the hearts of Americans. But it wasn’t just the Beetle. Remember the microbus? Fah-rvergnugen, anyone? There were a lot of cars, but also a lot of problems.

Lost In America

“The Volkswagen brand went through a period where perhaps you could say it lost its way a little in the U.S. marketplace,” says John Brown-ing, CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America. He’s alluding to the company’s problems with quality, reliability, marketing and image. Volkswagen couldn’t turn the love for Herbie into a dominance of the U.S. car market, and Browning says that’s because the company hasn’t always under-stood the American consumer. That’s going to change, he says. “We’re really focusing on the U.S. market as an integral part of our global strategy. Now, to achieve that, we’re going to have to step up our game in the U.S. market,” Browning says. Part of stepping up the game means spending money in the U.S. — and a lot of it. “We’re making the investment in production. We’re making the invest-ment in the products for the U.S. con-

sumer. Importantly, investment that was made in the U.S. market eventhrough the depths of the recession,” he says. Volkswagen spent more than $5 bil-lion on a new car plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. The first car, a Passat, rolled off the line this week.

Aiming For No. 1 In America — And The World

The investment in the U.S. is impor-tant if Volkswagen wants to be the No. 1 car company in the world. “What Americans don’t realize is how enormous this company is,” auto analyst Rebecca Lindland says.“They are so enormous in all the other parts of the world. They’re the big-gest seller in China,” she says. “Their factory in Wolfsburg produces 800,000 vehicles a year — one factory.” Lindland says to win the global race with Toyota and GM, Volkswagen has to sell a lot more cars in the U.S.Jessica Caldwell, with the car website Edmunds.com, says the company has

had some success, especially on the coasts and with young people. “They’re definitely targeted at a younger demographic, and I think it’s served them well with that demograph-ic, but definitely, as their designs have

matured, you can say that it’s ... alien-ated some of those people,” she says. “It’s not quite quirky enough to work for everyone; it’s not quite main-stream enough to work for everyone. So it’s kind of somewhere in between.”

It Takes Time To Be The Best

That quirky in-between means it could be harder for the company to stake its claim on the U.S. consumer. Caldwell says the American car market has become more competitive with more global players making serious investments. “It’s harder to break through and become that one big car like the Ford F150 or Toyota Camry,” she says. “It’s more difficult today than it ever has been.” So Volkswagen may have a harder time reaching its goal of selling a mil-

lion cars a year in America in the com-ing decade. Caldwell says she’s skeptical that Volkswagen will meet this lofty goal. “It comes down to good product. If you have good product, people will come and they will buy your brand, but it’s something that’s going to take a long time.” “It can’t happen in a few years,” she says. “You can’t grow yourselves by 400 percent in five years’ time.” Volkswagen executives say with higher gas prices — and their smaller cooler cars — they hope the new Herbie will be as loved as, say, the Toyota Camry.

On the northern edge of the Lake of the Ozarks region State Highway 52 runs east and west through a number of small towns and former whistle stops on the defunct Missouri Pacific Railroad line, towns like Eldon, Barnett, Versailles, Stover and Cole Camp. All of the towns have long been sustained by agriculture. While each of these towns has an interesting history, only Cole Camp has its entire downtown area listed on the National Regis-ter of Historic Places. A visit to Cole Camp is like stepping back to the 19th century because the town has changed very little since it was settled and

built up in the mid-to-late 1800s by immigrants from Northern Germany. Historic buildings can be found along both sides of Highway 52, which passes through the center of town. At the four-way stop the high-way crosses Maple Street, which is also lined with interesting old buildings housing restaurants, an-tique shops, lodging facilities and the Cole Camp Museum. The south end of Maple Street junctions with the former But-terfield Stage line that operated

between 1856 and 1861. On the southwest corner of this junction stands the old red brick Bellview Hotel building, which is featured in the photo, circa 1929, that accompanies this article. The photographer is unknown. The date of the building’s con-struction is murky but is believed to have occurred in the 1880s. The first occupant of the build-ing was Louis Grother who had a drug store, then P. M. Bell who established the Bellview Hotel. Subsequent operators included Peter Tobaben and Anna and Chris

Runsick. Chris ran a taxi service from the hotel to Sedalia and to the railroad depot. It is said that he was kept very busy and that the hotel thrived during his operation. In succeeding years the building housed a variety of otherbusinesses. By the late 1920s when the ac-companying photo was taken, the lettering along the top of the build-ing was so faded one could hardly see that it was a hotel. The lettering was later painted white, as it is today, although it is no longer a hotel. In 1927, the hotel had 20 rooms and you could rent one for $2.00 a night, which was fifty cents higher than the smaller City Hotel. Perhaps the amenities were more luxurious.

Randy Dinwiddie and his staff has shown amazing support to the U.S. Air Force. Their commitment to advertisement has allowed individuals the opportunity to receive infor-mation about Air Force. I recommend adver-tisement in their paper if you are looking to reach out to a wide variety of demographics. Robert N. Florez, SSgt, USAFAir Force [email protected]

I have advertised with several companies in and outside of Columbia, Missouri and none have shown me the dedication and customer service that The Deal Maker has. Randy Dinwiddie, head of The Deal Maker, calls a few times a month to make sure that everything is going ok and check on the ad to see if we have received any business from it. The Deal Maker is delivered throughout the sur-rounding counties and I receive business from people throughout the entire state thanks to The Deal Maker. By choosing to advertise with The Deal Maker you are choosing to take your business to the next level. When a business advertises with The Deal Maker they will receive in return great customer care, satisfac-tion, and new business opportunities. I have been with the Deal Maker for several years now and my business grows every month that I advertise with Randy Dinwiddie. If you are ready to move forward with your business and gain new customers, then choose to advertise with The Deal Maker.Dant AllisonAllstate Insurance
