The UWA Business School is one of the premier Business Schools in the Asia Pacific Region and has a reputation for international excellence in research, teaching and learning. The School is the only one in Western Australia with both AACSB and EQUIS accreditations.

The Business School has a complement of over 130 fulltime staff servicing more than 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Graduates from the School have continued on to become leaders in a variety of industries throughout the world.

The Business School is supported by a Board of prominent UWA alumni and leaders in industry and commerce who are committed to positioning the School as a leading institution world-wide. This high-level group lends their energy and influence to help build links between the Business School and the Australian and international communities.

Proud of its research achievements, the Business School is committed to maintaining an international reputation for scholarly excellence and relevance in pure and applied research. Research clusters within the UWA Business School are aligned with the following disciplinary areas: Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management and Organisations, and Marketing.

Accounting and Finance

The grouping of Accounting and Finance reflects the historically close connections between finance and accounting academics at UWA. Although few in numbers in comparison with other Go8 Universities, the Discipline has disproportionately high profile and influence; for example both the current President and President-Elect of the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia & New Zealand are based at UWA, as is the Director of Research of the Australian Accounting Standards Board. A third member leads a group that develops learning standards for all Australian universities.

Further, a high proportion of WA’s business leaders majored in accounting and/or finance. They remain a potent source of support that the University, the School and Discipline has tapped on various occasions.

Two recently developed graduate degrees, the Master of Applied Finance and Master of Professional Accounting, are amongst those targeted by the University to deliver significant growth in student numbers.

A large contingent of new appointees hailing from Asia, Europe, South Africa and locally make Accounting and Finance one of the more diverse disciplines.

The UWA Business School

Economics

Economics was a founding discipline of UWA when it was established in 1911. Economics has research strengths in International Trade, Development Economics, Resource Economics and Asian Economies.

The Economics discipline has a large number of PhD students and hosts regular visits from acclaimed international academic economists. They hold two seminars per week, host the PhD Conference in Economics and Business, the Shann and Bateman Memorial public lectures, and several major conferences. The annual Shann Memorial Lecture invites a prominent economist to deliver a presentation in the area of economics and finance. All of these events generate considerable interest from the economics community and stimulate the discipline’s teaching and learning activities.

Marketing

The Marketing Discipline is actively involved in many research projects, including entrepreneurship and innovation, small business, ethical issues in marketing, personal values around the world and their impact on a variety of outcomes, the role cooperatives play in modern markets, social media marketing, relationship marketing, the marketing of education internationally, country-of-origin issues, research impact in marketing, agent-based modelling, B2B networks, customer co-creation and customer complaining behaviour.

Marketing staff are on many editorial boards and are involved with relevant academic organisations, including ANZMAC, ANZAM and SEAANZ. The Marketing group has a vibrant doctoral program, with more than 20 doctoral students in various stages of their research programs. The group also has a very active research seminar series in which internal and external speakers from around the world participate.

Management and Organisations

Management and Organisations is rated as “well above world standards” in terms of excellence in research in Australia. The group conducts collaborative and multidisciplinary research in topics such as leadership, proactivity, work systems design, motivation, training and work safety.

World-leading researchers in the group include an Australian Laureate Fellow and a Thomson highly-cited researcher. Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows participate in a dynamic research environment that values industry collaboration and international engagement.

The state’s population is matching the rapid growth of the economy and is over two million.

Perth is a cosmopolitan city, with wide ethnic and cultural diversity. The city centre is on the Swan River 12 kilometres from the Indian Ocean port of Fremantle.

The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia. Summers are hot and dry and the winters mild and wet.
