The Ocean County Northern Recycling Center consists of a 60 acre sitewhich includes: a single stream facility with state of the art processing equipment, an education center, two large compost fields, a backyard com-post demonstration area, 24-hour resident drop-off recycling center and aspecial waste drop-off area. The 24-hour resident recycling center and spe-cial waste area is located at 601 New Hampshire Ave., Bldg. #68 Lakewood Town-ship. The leaf and brush drop-off areas as well as the compost and wood chippick-up areas are located at the 535 Oberlin Avenue entrance. If you haveany questions please call 732-367-0802.The Ocean County Southern Recycling Center located in Stafford Townshipconsists of a recyclables transfer station, a 24-hour resident drop-off recy-cling center, a special waste building and a compost facility. The resident re-cycling drop-off center is located at 350 Haywood Road and the specialwaste, leaves, brush, compost and woodchips is located at 379 HaywoodRoad Building #105. MUNICIPAL RECYCLING COORDINATORS

RECYCLING COLLECTIONThe New Jersey Mandatory Recycling and Source Separation Act and the Ocean County Recycling Plan require

municipalities to make provisions for the collection of residential recyclables including: bottles and cans, newsprint, card-board and mixed paper.

Curbside collection of recyclables varies significantly in Ocean County with many municipalities providing weeklycollection and others providing bi-weekly collection. All municipalities are required to make provisions to collect themandatory recyclable material from residential areas. Many coastal communities have a summer and winter collectionschedule to accommodate increases in quantities generated by summer vacationers. A number of municipalities also pro-vides a drop-off center where residents can bring recyclables. Please review the table on pages 6 and 7 for details ondrop-off centers. Municipalities are also responsible for the collection of bulky items and appliances. Please contact yourmunicipal recycling coordinator to obtain information on procedures and fees.

SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING PROGRAMAcceptable/Unacceptable Materials

In 2010, Ocean County began a single stream recycling program (placing all con-tainers, paper, cardboard, etc. in the same bin) in the hopes it would become eas-ier for residents to recycle, which in turn would increase recycling participation.Recycling participation HAS increased. However, we have seen an increase in un-acceptable materials and garbage coming into our processing facilities. Worst

among these materials is plastic bags. Please DO NOT PUT FILLED OR LOOSEPLASTIC BAGS IN YOUR RECYCLING BINS. Plastic bags wreak havoc on sort-ing machinery and require hours of downtime for their removal. Bags can entanglethemselves in equipment, reducing sorting efficiency and causing materials to mixwith one another. It’s important to remember all plastics are not created equallyand not all plastics can be recycled by our facilities, including and especially plas-tic garbage and grocery bags. Many supermarkets and “big box stores” (Walmart,Target, Lowe’s, Home Depot et al.) have programs for grocery bag recycling;check for recycling bins near the main entrance or ask customer service.For a list of businesses in your area with plastic bag recycling programs, visit

www.plasticfilmrecycling.org and enter your area code in the search bar (Note: Stop& Shop supermarkets do not appear in the listings, however all Stop & Shop loca-tions participate in plastic bag recycling). PLEASE DO NOT TIE OR BUNDLE TOGETHER PAPER. PLEASE REMOVEALL BOTTLE CAPS, JAR LIDS, ETC. FROM BOTTLES AND CONTAINERS AND DISPOSE OFTHEM IN YOUR REGULAR TRASH.

The Ocean County Master Composter Program, which began in 2000, is sponsored by the Ocean County Boardof Chosen Freeholders and the Ocean County Dept. of Solid Waste Management. The premise of this programis to train a core of individuals to help educate Ocean County residents on how to manage the organic portionof their solid waste. Training classes, which are offered annually and free to Ocean County residents, are heldin the spring or fall and are subject to demand. Although a gardening background would be helpful, it is not arequirement. Once training is completed, volunteers then agree to provide a total of 24 hours of outreach, ed-

ucation, and service to promote the benefits of home composting. Ocean County residents can learn the basics of backyard home composting in “How to” CompostWorkshops that are held in the spring or fall each year. These workshops are offered free to Ocean County residents andtaxpayers and are taught by the Ocean County Master Composters. Registration is required. Classes limited to 25 people.

• The service representatives are uniformed, bonded and insured.• The shredding unit features an automatic feeding and dumping system, eliminating

human contact with your documents and forms.• Each vehicle is limited to 6 boxes or bags of documents each day.

COMPOST, MULCH & WOOD CHIPS - Are available to Ocean County resident and municipalities free of charge from theCounty's two recycling centers. Contact the recycling centers to check availability of these materials and where to pick up.

The 7,200 mile separation didn’t change the common goal between the staff thatimplements Ocean County’s recycling efforts and that of the China Resource Re-cycling Association. A group of about 20 association members visited the OceanCounty Northern Recycling Center off New Hampshire Avenue, Lakewood, onJune 21. It was the first leg of their U.S. market research. “We are very proud ofthe work that is done here especially because it helps our environment,” said OceanCounty Freeholder Gerry P. Little, who serves as liaison to Ocean County’s awardwinning recycling program. “We deeply appreciate your interest in visiting ourcenter and we are very happy we share this common interest.”
