Roll over Beethoven – Bear class are de-veloping their piano skills to play Ode To Joy using independent fingers. All pupils have shown great resilience to practise a new skill and to use the hand with which they do not write.

2018 has been a brilliant year so far for the maths department at the Rise School. There is a great energy and purpose within the maths team to provide maths lessons that engage and challenge our pupils across all phases. Irina Tobias has been working superbly with Year 6 and Year 7s to embed fundamental maths skills that are required for our pupils to succeed in KS3 and KS4. We have also had our first external maths assessments. Pearson functional skills in mathematics level 1 of which our pu-pils did exceptionally well. We have also completed a series of dyscalculia assessments with some of the pupils across the primary and secondary phase, I am very proud that our pupils are now accessing the rele-vant support that is necessary for them to make great progress in numeracy. Finally, we are proud of the desire and dedication from the Year 11 pupils who are working hard to be ready for their GCSE examinations in May and June.

Mr Ovola

In celebration of ‘Science Week’ both primary and secondary pupils got a chance to work with scientists from SATRO. The pupils built ‘Giant Shelters’ and team work made the dream work with problem solving being the key. Year 10 & 11 pupils have now completed four of the units for their Entry Certificate and are starting the 2

nd

Chemistry unit. Opal, Emerald and Sapphire have been exploring the elements in the periodic table and are now looking forward to working with acid and alkali.

Alongside the 6 nations this term in PE we have been focusing on our tag rugby skills. Pupils have enjoyed our mini games and worked hard during lessons to improve their tactical game play. Our Primary pupils attended their 1

st ever Panathlon Boccia

tournament. They worked well as a team and embraced the competition winning lots of medals.

In Art this term primary pupils ex-plored drawing from the very begin-ning by looking at stone age cave-men drawings and exploring char-coal as a medium.

This term secondary classes enjoyed going to

the Design Museum and learnt the process of

creating a product.

We would also like to thank Ade Adepitan for attending our

Sports Relief day. Pupils had a great time playing basketball

and raising money for this wonderful cause.

Caterpillars Class

Monkeys Class

This half term Caterpillars have been learning all about our

neighbourhood. We learnt about the different people who help us. It

was very exciting to meet a police man on one of our trips, Lewi very

kindly said to him: “Thank you for getting all the bad guys”.

We made beautiful Family Booklets with reflections about what the

people we love are good at and what we are good at. Rayan and

Jabir especially enjoyed this project.

Gursahib is starting to use Makaton for “washing hands”, well done.

Ulrich is learning how to use his Ipad to communicate and so far it

has made a huge impact on his relationship with his friends and his

learning! Well done to the both of them!

Caterpillars went to Snakes and Ladders in Syon Lane where we

took part in an Easter craft workshop and developed our friendships

and behaviour in the community. We took our first ever tube from

Hatton Cross to Hounslow East and back. All pupils were excellent!

We had Katie’s Birthday this Half term on the 23rd

of March. Happy Birthday Katie!

This half term Monkeys class has had been very busy learning about time. The boys created a

human clock! Now we know what a full hour, quarter and half past look like.

In English, Monkeys started practising cursive writing so now our handwriting will be neat and tidy!

Despite the snowy weather, we still had a chance to celebrate World Book Day a week later! All the Monkeys made an extra effort and dressed as their favourite book characters! Well done Monkeys.

Tigers Class

Giraffes Class

Giraffes have had a fantastic half term with lots of exciting learning activities to keep them

busy! In Topic we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt; making a fact file, mummies

and creating a beautiful display board. In maths we have been learning all about 3D shapes

and their properties. We have also had lots of fun learning songs to help us remember our 7

and 8 times tables.

To celebrate Easter we got the opportunity to make bunny cupcakes to take home and share with our families.

Tigers have a real SPRING in their step now the sun is shining and it’s getting warmer! This

half term we have all been learning how to tell the time in Maths and looking at different po-

ems in English; thinking about how different words can make us experience different feelings.

We have been reading Harry Potter in story time and enjoyed dressing up as some of the

characters for World Book Day (and Frankie the dinosaur!).

Our topic this term has been The Normans and 1066. We have been finding out lots of infor-mation about the Battle of Hastings, the Bayeux Tapestry and can’t wait for our trip to the Tower of London! Team team team…..TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS!

Bear Class

Opal Class

Opal Class are exploring the process of design during their Design & Technology unit by creating an analogue clock based on personal interests. They enjoyed learn-ing outside the classroom this term with a trip to the Design Museum.

This half term Bears class have been learning about different celebrations: St. Patrick’s Day

and Easter.

They have also had fun researching about Stephen Hawkins and Malala Yousafzai. They

were very intrigued by their lives, especially by Stephen Hawkins, who had motor neuron

disease for 55 years.

We also enjoyed Science Week, where Bears class pupils engaged in building a shelter us-

ing paper tubes. They did very well and appear to be future engineers in the making.

Lastly, Bears class enjoyed their trip to Jump Giants, where everyone had so much fun.

Emerald Class

Sapphire Class

This term in Art we have been looking at form and shape, and created our very own fig-ure sculptures based on and inspired by the artist Giacometti. Sapphire class started by drawing each other in different poses in just 10 seconds! They chose their favourite picture and used this to create the shape of their wire model. These were then wrapped in tin foil before being coated with plaster of paris strips. The final stage was to paint them. We are so impressed with the end result, we think they look amazing!

In ICT this term we have been looking at the climate in Keswick and London and creating our own graphs. We then made a power point to present our data. We all worked really hard to collect and present our data successfully.

A fantastic term for the Emerald class at the Rise School. We are so proud of the social development of the pupils, from playing with each other during breaks to supporting each other to ensure that every member of the class completes their homework in time. This has been the highlight of the Spring term in Emeralds. As a team we are so proud with the rapid development that is taking place. We also want to thank Kevin and Adam who have supported the class immensely during this term. We are so grateful for your con-sistency and resilience. We have also enjoyed some very successful trips this term in-cluding an art trip to the Design Museum as well as a trip to Oxygen Trampoline Park. We look forward to the up and coming Summer term.

Jade Class

Amber Class

What an eventful half term it has been for Jade class.

In Art we learned about sculptures, made our own and even visited Tate Britain to see works

by artists such as Henry Moore.

We looked at moral dilemmas in English and had a few debates and discussions which we all

loved. We read the play version of Millions, and then had fun acting out the different

characters.

In PSHE lessons we have studied the suffragette movement and human rights.

To celebrate the end of a fantastic term Jade class went on 3 trips, during the last two weeks of term. Hard work pays off!

Amber team had an amazing experience at the Team Sport Go Karting circuit. At the beginning of the trip we were a little nervous as it was our first time and there were lots of instructions to follow. However, we encouraged each other, took our cooling down breaks and in the end we all had our turns and enjoyed the experience.

Diamond Class

All the boys have been working hard towards their assessments. Several of the boys have just completed their BTEC Home Cooking Skills Level 2, in which they produced some fantastic meals. They have also just had the results of their Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths as well as their Science Biology module and we are very proud to let you know that most of the boys gained these qualifications.

IT

We have had another really busy but enjoyable time in computing this half term. In the primary classes we used IT to support our learning by researching and presenting infor-mation about the Ancient Egyptians and the Norman Conquest. Giraffes have also used augmented reality (AR). This is the technology used to power Pokemon Go but we have used it to learn more about the building of the pyramids. In Key Stage 3 we improved our programming knowledge by learning how to use Microbits. These are very small and cheap computers with a number of inputs, sensors and an LED display. They can be programmed online and then used for a variety of creative purposes. We hope to make the Microbits available for pupils to take and use at home next term. In Key Stage 4 we have finished the first project in our Creative iMedia course and have started our second topic, learning about interactive multimedia communication.

Positive Behavioural Support

What would a scout do? Be prepared!

Preparation is key to success. Some ways in which we help pupils cope with the day

include: structured lessons and transitions, social stories for upcoming events,

WAGOLLS (what a good one looks like) for tasks, role playing in advance of a

situation, written expectations and working through what could go wrong before trips or

community visits.

Similarly, at home, pupils can be prepared for new events. Before an outing:

Ensure the child knows how you will get there, how long it will take and what will

happen when you arrive at your destination.

Name a few unexpected events that might occur and how they could be enjoyed/

solved. Give examples and practice the skills at home before going out.

If an event they have been expecting needs to be cancelled, this can be

communicated by pre-empting that sad news is about to be delivered and clarify-

ing what the appropriate ways of responding might be (being alone for a while,

hitting a pillow).

Have a lovely Easter!

Pupil Voice

In this issue, our pupil voice column is written by Ethan Jones, about what it was like coming

to The Rise:

What I like about The Rise School.

I like The Rise School in so many ways. The Rise School is an autistic school, and is abso-

lutely divine. I came here scared, thinking that it would make me more miserable. I had to

give it a chance and I loved it. I never thought I would have so many nice friends, especially

Oli. He welcomed me and made me feel welcome to The Rise.

After a week of school, I was changed into Emerald Class. It was more than ok, I didn’t mind

having less peers, and it kind of made me feel happy. One person helped me and wasn’t

mean to me, his name is Cassius. He helped me in pretty much all lessons, until I finally got

the hang of things. I’m just happy that I came to this school, and made new friends. :)

The snowy weather may have delayed The Rise’s celebration of World Book Day but we

certainly celebrated it in style on Friday 9th March!

Pupils from both phases came as a variety of literary characters: can you spot Stanley Yelnats

from Holes? Harry Potter characters were pretty popular in Tigers class who have been

enjoying this series during regular story time: we had Harry, Dumbledore and Hagrid!

Bears class used the story sacks to read to other primary pupils: they were enthralled.

All classes also got to take advantage of a story slot with our very own Kevin Lake in the

sensory room: Secondary pupils enjoyed the opening of A Curious Incident of the Dog in the

Night Time whilst Primary classes read a variety of stories from their regular story time.

So many pupils dedicated their break and reward time to participating in the 10 question book-

themed scavenger hunt. You can see Emerald pupils at the final stop with Susan collecting

their prizes.

Secondary pupils were tantalised and teased by getting one section only of a grizzly Roald Dahl short story (The Lamb to the Slaughter) at the beginning of each lesson so as the day progressed they got to read the whole story.

Attitude of Gratitude

Resilience Trees at The Rise

Staff Wellbeing

This half term our Gratitude Friday highlight was expressing our Gratitude towards Ade

Adepitan who very kindly came to our school and supported us with our Sport Relief

event.

Some of the messages:

‘Thank you Ade for coming to our school.’

‘Thank you Ade for supporting us.’

‘Thank you Ade for inspiring us.’

For our Staff Wellbeing Friday the Knitting club has decided to knit for a very noble cause. We will be knitting bonding squares which we will then give to St Thomas’s Hospital as they need boding squares for their neonatal intensive care unit. One square is put with the poorly baby and the other one with the parent and then these are swapped over daily. Our wellbeing for a noble cause.

This half term we started learning about the ‘Tools of Resilience’ as part of our new Weaving Wellbeing Curriculum. We had lots of fun learning about resilient people like J.K. Rowling, Malala, Nelson Mandela and Michael Jordan. We enjoyed being creative and making our own Resilient Tree.

Food Technology

Learning Outside of The Classroom

This half term we have begun to focus on protein continuing our path around the Eat Well Guide. In KS3 we have been cooking eggs: boiled, fried, scrambled and our final recipe, a real treat, pancakes! Just a little reminder here that pancakes can be savoury as well as sweet. In food theory we have been looking at seasonal foods and clever shopping.

As mentioned in our last newsletter we were on the verge of confirming a weekly sailing slot at The Queen Mary Reservoir. We are pleased to be able to confirm that after the Easter break we will be having weekly sessions every Thursday for certain secondary pupils. Letters will be going home to those lucky enough to be piloting these sessions for us but please know that our plan is to ensure this is an opportunity that all of our secondary students ultimately enjoy. The Sailability programme is run by the RYA and is an opportunity for people with disabilities or special educational needs to get involved in sailing. We believe these sessions will give your children sense of freedom, independence and competition.

I am also pleased to inform you that we have recently had confirmation from QPR in the Com-munity Trust that we will be able to get discounted tickets for certain home QPR matches. Final details about costs and matches are still to be confirmed but to find out more about how you can qualify for this fantastic offer please email Pat Fisher at [email protected]

We were delighted to be able to give all of our pupils a real wild life treat this term with a school visit from ZOOLAB. The animals that we were fortunate enough to get our hands on included millipedes, snakes, frogs and a giant snail amongst others. Pupils showed great courage and resilience in their insistence to handle and pet them.

Take a look at this snail slithering over this brave pupil.

In KS4 we have been working towards our BTEC qualifications. Pupils taking Level 1 have been cooking one of the many recipes they have tried out during their time at the Rise. The Level 2 group have been focused on creating a two course meal and planning to ensure it’s nutritious and ready on time. A big thank you to the families for providing some excellent evidence of the pupils cooking at home.

Thoughts for the Week Summer 1

As part of our registration every morning, we focus on our Thought for the Week and what this

means within our daily lives. Pupils are encouraged to discuss these and focus on what the

saying means to them. They have been chosen based on our core values of BE KIND; BE

RESILIENT; BE PROUD, which are firmly embedded in all we do at The Rise. The Thoughts for

the Week for Summer 1 are:
