Dear Friends, As most of you already know, this past Monday, Cardinal Joseph Tobin visited St. Anne, to be with us and with the ten other parishes in our Deanery. It was his 21st Deanery visit since he came to the archdiocese. He has 6 more to visit before he will have been to all 27 of these geographical divisions. Sometimes it’s possible to think that everyone knows what you know...and often they don’t. I can assume, for example, that we all know what a deanery is. A lot of folks don’t. So, if you don’t mind a little walking tour, allow me to highlight the way the archdiocese is broken down. The Church of Newark comprises the four counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union. Each county is called a vicariate, meaning that the representative (called a vicar) of the archbishop, directs the church affairs of each county. The Vicar for Bergen County is Bishop John Flesey. Each vicariate is subdivided into deaneries. There are 7 such subdivisions in Bergen County. Our deanery is number 4, the Southwest Bergen Deanery. It includes 10 parishes, all from either Elmwood Park (1 parish), Fair Lawn (1), Garfield (3), Lodi (2), Rochelle Park (1), or Saddle Brook (2). Why do we have these divisions? It’s to better coordinate the Church of Newark’s efforts to help its members fulfill Christ’s mission. What is that mission? It’s for us to live together, in our parishes, families, and friendships, so that we will experience the saving difference that he makes and to draw others by how we live that difference. How that mission should be concretely lived in our time, in this period of our history, is shaped by the vision that the archbishop wants to have for the Church of Newark. This is why he has undertaken these deanery visits. When he first came to Newark he said that he didn’t have a vision as yet. He wanted to find out what was happening here to help him begin to formulate one. So it is that Cardinal Tobin came to Deanery 4, as he has visited 20 other deaneries since last February. He did so to primarily listen to us, to understand our concerns about the Church, and to appreciate how we are trying to live the mission of Christ. The archbishop heard various people from our deanery voice concerns as varied as how to live the social justice dimension of the gospel, how to help younger families raise their children as Christians, how to reach out to those who aren’t affected by how the gospel is lived and preached, how to welcome newer ethnic groups into parish life, and how to find better ways for parishes to deepen our lived experience of Christ. The cardinal shared his approaches to some of these issues. He also shared, however, that he didn’t have all the answers. He wants to discern Christ’s direction from what he hears. From this, he hopes to develop a vision in which we all can share. Together, he believes, we will find the most effective ways the Lord wants us to meet today’s challenges. Love, Fr.Joe

REFLECTION

LOVE AS IF…… Vinita Hampton Wright

Love as if loving is the first thing on your to-do list. Love as if you have no other plan but to love. Love as if you are confident that love makes good things happen. Love as if this is your first opportunity to love. Love as if this is your last opportunity to love. Love as if loving can heal all wounds. Love as if loving is your first purpose on earth. Love as if loving is your favorite choice. Love as if you have that kind of power. Love as if it will keep the earth spinning in vast, beautiful space.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time “The stone the builders rejected has become

the cornerstone…” (Matthew 21:42)

Jesus was the cornerstone and He was rejected by the religious and political leaders of his day, as well as ordinary citizens. Living a stewardship lifestyle may cause you to be “rejected” by others in today’s society. For example, saying grace before a meal in a restaurant may attract some strange looks from some. But to others it is a sign that God is alive and well!

BACK TO OUR ROOTS BTOR will meet this Thursday, October 12th

from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Faith Center. All are welcome!!

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

which along with other fees and donations, totaled $20,524.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy

months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks.

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will

see a light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear.

Select the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!

Please insert the same page as used in last weeks bulletin for page 6.

Thank you!!
