Dear Friends,At the end of 2009, ARC of Greater Milwaukee(ARC) kicked off its 60th year of service. It hasbeen wonderful celebrating the work of an organi-zation that has been so important to individualswith disabilities and their families.

Through the vision of ARC’s founding families in1949, monumental change has occurred in ourcommunity for persons with disabilities. Their ef-forts led the movement of deinstitutionalization, equal access to quality education and communitybased services that continue today.

Needs are still great. ARC has set an aggressivecourse for the future, working to realize the goal ofour founding families—that all individuals with dis-abilities can live safely and successfully.

Here are a few of our efforts in 2009 to make this happen. ARC encourages individuals with disabili-ties to lead the disability movement through self-advocacy and independence. Their work at theindividual and systems level is truly inspiring.

ARC’s newest service, our Care Management Unit,is a partnership with the State of Wisconsin Family

Care Program. A social worker and Registered Nursefrom ARC assist persons with disabilities in managingand monitoring their long-term care services.

ARC’s Trust Program is on the cusp of expansionto offer individuals and families another option forfinancial and futures planning.

In collaboration with students with disabilities, theirfamilies and school districts, ARC helps to improveacademic outcomes and ensures that studentsleave school with a futures plan. ARC also pro-vides individualized support through crisis interven-tion, trainings, guardianship, information and assis-tance and support for aging caregivers.

Leadership and dedication from ARC’s board, staff, many friends and donors make our work hap-pen. I thank each for their talent and commitmentto ARC. Through their workand advocacy we touched the lives of over 5,000 chil-dren and adults with dis-abilities. Another 60 greatyears of service is justaround the corner!
