Dear friends in the Lord,

As the world marks over one million deaths to Covid, our nation surpasses the dreadful threshold of more than 200,000, and infection rates begin to rise once again, this is a moment for us all to recommit to doing our part to save lives.

Months of hand-washing, mask-wearing, distance learning and Zoom meetings—not to men-tion economic hardship—have made us eager for it all to be over. We experience that impa-tience especially in our spiritual lives, where we yearn for the sacraments and for a return to public worship without restrictions and inconveniences. But we must pray for the gift of pa-tience and the virtue of prudence—and above all for a Christ-like love.

I’ve been discouraged by the way simple and prudent measures like social distancing and the wearing of facemasks have become politicized in our nation in recent months. As I watched crowds on television angrily clamoring to be “liberated” from these and other public health pro-tocols, I found myself wondering how many of the people in those crowds would identify as Christians. And if they are Christians, or even Catholics, I wonder what they imagine Christ’s great commandments mean in the context of a global pandemic: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength—and your neighbor as yourself (Mt 22:37-39). Of course Jesus would go on to say that there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (Jn 15:13). That’s a pretty high bar! But in light of those words, sim-ple expressions of the love of neighbor like social distancing and the wearing of facemasks should be a no-brainer for a follower of Jesus Christ.

I’ve seen social media posts from otherwise intelligent and caring people actually question-ing the reality of the pandemic. Some have asked, “How can hundreds of thousands of people be dying, and yet I don’t know a single person who has gotten sick?” If you don’t know anyone who has become ill from Covid, I am happy for you, and I pray that you never do. But I do know many people who have suffered, and more than a few who have died. I’ve been at their bedsides to anoint them, and I’ve buried them. They were my parishioners over the years; they were healthcare workers who risked their lives as the virus raged; they were priests I loved and respected. When I encounter people who are unwilling to do the smallest things to save vulnera-ble lives, I’m afraid I take it rather personally.

May it be said of us, when the pandemic is long-past, that we took to heart the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians: “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart. Do nothing out of selfishness or vainglory. Rather, humble yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests only, but everyone for those of others” (2:2-4).

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK In the Gospel today, the owner of the vineyard sent messengers to collect his share of the harvest from the tenant farmers, but there was not a single good steward on the property! God is the owner, we are the tenants. What sort of

stewards are we?

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? A bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in death the Christian stew-ardship you practice in life. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Will. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to IHM become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at [email protected] or 404-497-9440.

ELECTRONIC GIVING OPTIONS During the present public health crisis, when the physical collections during Mass are gravely affected by reduced church attendance, online giving options abound!

Go to ihmatlanta.org/online-giving-options to learn about Give by Text, GivePlus Mobile and electronic giving through our parish website. Or just scan this QR code to be taken directly to our par-ish PayPal account.

Thank you for your good stewardship of IHM!

OUR ANNUAL PARISH STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL is now underway! Registered households have received a letter from Monsignor Jowdy introducing our annual Stewardship Renewal and asking for our participation.

STEWARDSHIP IS BASED on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. It is a way of thanking God for all the blessings of our lives by returning to God a portion of our Time, Talent and Treasure. Steward-ship changes the lives of people who practice it, and it transforms our parish.

PLEASE PRAY about your commitments of Time, Talent and Treasure for the coming year. The pandemic will make this a Stewardship Renewal like no other in our lifetimes. The finances of many households have been gravely affected by the sudden economic down- turn. Some will be unable to contribute at their customary level, so those who are financially able will need to step forward in a heroic way.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY IS NEXT WEEKEND, when we will prayerfully return our commitments during Mass. Thank you for your good stewardship of IHM!

CHRISTMAS IN OCTOBER! Yes, it’s time to think about decorating for the holiday sea-son, and the IHM Mustard Seed Ministry will be selling Christmas greenery for the 11th year in a row. Support Mus-tard Seed by purchasing quality, live Christmas greenery at our online store. We will be offering a Noble Fir wreath, Noble Fir door swag, 10’ garland, and a beautiful center-piece, all for $25.00 each. Also, back by popular demand, we will be offering the updated version of the Holiday Rein-deer set for $20.00. These reindeer sets make great gifts for teachers, coworkers and/or friends.

In the past, the funds raised from our greenery sales support-ed the spring IHM mission to Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica. However, it is not clear if our missionaries will be able to travel next spring. Nonetheless, MSC still desperate-ly needs our support! Any funds raised through these sales will support the mission of MSC.

Our Online Greenery store is live NOW through November 8. Go to https://ihm-msc-greenery.square.site to order online or download the order form and submit it, with payment to the parish office by November 8. All orders will be available for socially distanced, contactless pick-up between Novem-ber 30 and December 5. An email will be sent with pick up dates. For more information, contact Marty Bova-Banks at 404-403-3952.

BLESSING OF ANIMALS October 3 Join us for IHM’s Blessing of Animals, in celebration of the feast of St. Francis of As-sisi. Bring your pets to the lower parking lot next Saturday, October 3 at 9:30 a.m. (The rite is very brief; don’t be late and miss it!) All are welcome! Facemasks (for the hu-mans) and social distancing (for everybody) will be required, and the blessing will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Pope Francis coined the phrase “throwaway culture” to de-scribe not only the callous waste of natural resources but the related tendency to regard certain human lives as disposable. The Catholic response to this destructive reality is sometimes known as the Consistent Life Ethic (CLE): a defense of the dignity of every human life. Using the book Resisting Throwaway Culture by Charles C. Camosy as our guide, we will explore how the CLE sheds light on the cri-ses of our time: abortion, racism, poverty, ecology, and state-sponsored violence. We will also learn about some of the inspiring work being done, locally and glob-ally, to promote the CLE. Guest presenters will include Catholic anti-racist activ-ist Steven N. Jones and Maria Oswalt of Rehumanize International.

FAITH FORMATION SCHEDULE Sunday, September 27

Sacramental Preparation classes will meet in person and online—check email for details.

Other elementary school students will have a Zoom check-in with their cate-chist (Even for those in the “in-person” session, this week’s check-in will take place virtually).

Middle School and High School groups will meet at their normal times, ei-ther in-person or online (see reverse page for further details)

ADULT FAITH FORMATION ON ZOOM Scripture Study Thursday nights, 7:30 pm Email Dr. Louanne Bachner for Zoom link

Did you know that Dr. Louanne Bachner’s scripture study continues to meet via Zoom? Each week, through lecture presentation and group discussion, Louanne explores the readings for the upcoming Sunday, in hopes of deepening your expe-rience of prayer at Mass. A graduate of Notre Dame and Emory University, Louanne Bachner has many years of experience in campus ministry and adult faith formation around the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP “Politics in our country often can be a contest of powerful interests, partisan at-tacks, sound bites, and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of politi-cal engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well-formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable.”

YOUTH GROUP This year we have worked to create small groups for our teens by offering multiple different times for our sessions. Due to this we are really able to focus on building relation-ships- between one another and with God on a more personal level. Our ministry is a work of education and love. We as that you please pray for our ministry- our teens and our lead-ers for safety, health, and to grow in relation with God through Jesus. Last week our focus was on scripture, we talked about seek-ing God (Isiah 55) and knowing that even when we can't feel him, he is always with us. This week we will be helping the teens practice forms of prayer that might be less familiar to them- such as meditative prayer.

REMINDERS FOR IN-PERSON SESSIONS Parents: reminder- drop-off for teens will be in the lower lev-el at 6:00 p.m., you cannot leave your teen until their temper-ature has been checked. Once they have had a positive, nor-mal temperature check, they will exit the car and you may exit the parking lot. Make sure they have their mask on be-fore exiting the car at church (covering their nose and mouth), and remind them to keep 6 feet (a basketball player laying down) between them and anyone else as they come to join us for Youth Group! Please pick them up at 7:15 p.m. from the lower level parking lot. For other youth group de-tails and calendar check out our website: https://ihmatlanta.org/youthministry and if you have any questions please e-mail Michele. If anyone in your family or that you have been around feels slightly not well, please keep your teen home, send me an email, and join us for the online ses-sion that week! Monday - online high school, Tuesday - online middle school youth group. Thank you for your help!

REMINDERS FOR THE ON-LINE SESSIONS Parents please help your teen to sign in to their Zoom session on time! Also, please help them to have a quiet area of the home where they won't be distracted or have too much back-ground noise. The Zoom link will be sent to you weekly the day before the session. You can expect the Zoom link to show up in the email box of the email that you registered your teen with. We ask that the teen use their own personal Zoom account so that it is their name on the Zoom. A free account works great! No need to buy the upgraded version. High schoolers we look forward to seeing you on Monday evening and middle schoolers on Tuesday evening!

STAY ENGAGED! With the need for more space during the pandemic, the youth group has amped up our online presence. Parents, follow us on FaceBook for reminders, updates, and some uplifting and or inspirational videos. Follow us on Instagram for powerful scripture verses and special event reminders.

FACE MASKS We're back in stock! Place your order on-line today! By pur-chasing in IHM logo face mask you will help support the high school Summer Mission Trip.
