Dear Friends,Welcome to Once Upon a Mattress. This show is such a fascinating mix of old and

new. The show opened on Broadway in 1959, and is a child of old-school musical theatretraditions. (In fact, the composer, Mary Rodgers, is the daughter of one half of the mostfamous team in Broadway history.) The structure is old-school—scene, song, scene, song, repeat—versus the more recent trend in which singing and dialogue flow in and outof one another continuously. There's something refreshing and comfortable about old-school, isn't there?

Yet at the same time, the show is surprisingly ahead of its time. This show practicallyinvented the meta-convention of the narrator who introduces the show (reminding us thatthis is, in fact, a play that we're watching), only to join in and become a character in theplay herself. And we thought Urinetown was hip and edgy when Officer Lockstock did that!

The show is a sweet balance of outrageous and sincere, fairy-taley and grounded. Wehope you enjoy it as much as we've enjoyed working on it.

And we hope you'll join us this July on our first "run" over to a new place for us - thegorgeous (and air-conditioned!) Kitchen Theatre, just a few blocks west of here. We'll besharing our "R2P's Best of Broadway" musical revue featuring performers in grades 6-9.It's a chance to see the next generation of up-and-coming R2People strut their stuff, andwe can't wait! We'll be closing the season in August with the classic Fiddler on the Roof atIthaca High School's (air-conditioned!) Kulp Auditorium, a venue we haven't run to in fiveseasons.

We've got a great season lined up for 2015, and we're so glad to have you as part ofthe R2P community. Hope to see you again soon!
