Dear Friends The weather and the seasons always provide a topic to reflect upon, and this summer has been no different! To say it has been changeable is something of an understatement! From days of extreme heat in July to days of extreme rain in August; from bedding being stripped back and use of cooling fans to cope, to putting the electric blanket on for 10 minutes and needing the heating on to thaw out! We struggle to adjust easily even though as believers we know the Lord does not change and His word stands for ever. Change seems to be a very present topic currently. As soon as we turn on the TV we cannot escape the deep anxiety and dis-ease and conflict and division within the country. We have seen such an increase in violence and knife crime, all the uncertainty of Brexit and the upsurge of rebellion against any decision or principle someone disagrees with. There is an ugliness in attitudes in the country which is steadily growing. I wonder if our parents or grandparents would even recognise the society we have become. There seems to be an increasing antipathy towards belief in a God who created this world and gave us such clear instructions about how we should live; how we should behave towards our fellow man and how we were created to worship. Without any merit of our own, the Lord drew us by His love and brought us into His family as adopted sons and daughters. We, in practical ways may be powerless – but we can pray. As God’s church are we called for such a time as this? How we need the Lord to pour out His Spirit in our land, our area, our churches. Where do our eyes need to be looking? Upwards – where our true security rests. “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 1

After reading the last magazine a dear friend commented that I would be no doubt talking about more change in this next one. I am. As of 1st August Val Haigh is now the CEO of UCHM. I have retired from any ‘active’ work within UCHM and will be functioning as chair of the trustees. I will now be supporting from behind the scenes and still heading the Israel Tours. My pending retirement had been really well planned and prepared for within the management team. I feel so incredibly blessed to have handed the reins over to Val. She is well respected within the team and her gifts are recognised. Her life / work experience has so prepared her for this role and we both know that the Lord has clearly called her to take over the running of UCHM. It has been an absolute delight to work with Val and get to know her so much better during the last three years. She is so very precious! The Lord has placed UCHM in very safe hands. Please pray for her. Other pointers for prayer: We are still in real need of receptionists, daytime and evening,

and shop volunteers We need someone to work with Lee on grant applications (Our

roof is in serious need of repair and our telephone system looks to be on its last legs)

We are very grateful to one of our trustees who arranged for a company to donate loft insulation free of charge. Unfortunately we can’t install it until the roof above is fixed

We’re grateful to God that our Level 4 Diploma course will be starting in September

Please pray for people to book on the Level 3 Certificate course and the Level 2 Introduction course which will be running from January

Thank you for being on our mailing list and taking an interest in UCHM. We appreciate you. Shalom Liz (Chair of Trustees)

ISRAEL PILGRIMAGE We were very sorry at having to cancel our planned 2019 trip to Israel. I believe there were a number of factors which taken together left us with no choice but to take the decision. Easyjet prices for our dates were £250 more than last time, the exchange rate is considerably lower than the previous tour and the Brexit situation has brought an uncertainty and anxiety over the outcome which resulted perhaps in less people wanting to commit to being away. Undeterred, we have been able to book for next year. We expect to be flying El Al who have recently returned to Manchester (and we’re delighted about that!) The new dates are Sunday 26th April to Sunday 10th May. For any wishing to visit Eilat at the end of the Pilgrimage for a 3rd week this will be possible. At this point, I am unable to give a definite price because of all the variables. Once El Al publish their schedule for next year, and if the $ gets up to 1.37 I am not expecting the cost to increase much. As always, we have a dedicated bank account available for anyone who would like to pay in over the months rather than in big chunks of money. So, if visiting Israel and walking in the footsteps Jesus is on your bucket list, please may I encourage you to come and join the pilgrimage. For me, my first time was in 1990 and it radically impacted my faith. Ever since, through many, many visits, I never return home without the Lord having opened something up to me in a new way. It is His land, His people and His Bible, and there’s so much more to discover.

Liz

Autumn Reflection Ann Railton, Lay Preacher

During World War II, an old church in Germany was bombed.

Everything was destroyed—except a life-size STATUE of JESUS, which had stood at the east wall, near to the altar.

Just like a miracle—the statue was completely unharmed! Except,

both of its hands were totally shattered and had fallen off.

The statue was carefully wrapped in straw and put into a wooden box. Then hidden away in a cellar. After the war ended the church was re-built, and the statue put back in its place of honour near the

altar.

Several years later, a sculptor visited the church. He offered to make the statue some beautiful new hands—free of charge. “O

thank you, how wonderful!” said the Pastor.

But a strange thing happened. At a discussion meeting, the congregation said, “No! we won’t accept the sculptor’s kind offer,

we’ll leave the statue just as it is.”

In the words of St Teresa Of Avila:

“Christ has no body now on Earth BUT YOURS No hands, no feet on Earth BUT YOURS

Yours are the EYES with which he looks with Compassion on this world

Yours are the FEET with which he goes about doing good And, yours are the HANDS with which Christ helps other people in

the world Today.”

So let us strive to reach out a helping-hand, a listening ear whenever we can. Always following in the footsteps of Our Saviour,

JESUS CHRIST.

ROGUES GALLERY When did you first learn about UCHM?

Showing my age – I was involved in the counselling work based in our church which then became UCHM. So I was involved before it was even

conceived.

What is your current involvement with UCHM?

Chair of Trustees: I’ve just retired as CEO, prior to that when Helga was Managing Director I was Director. I served as Head of Counselling and am a

BACP (Senior accredited) counsellor and supervisor I have also offered

training in a couple of specialist areas. I will still be leading the Israel pilgrimages (which I must admit, is my passion)

What previous work and life experience do you bring to UCHM

I trained as a nurse after leaving school but went through quite a lot of emotional trauma myself from childhood which meant I was not able at that

time to continue with my career. In 1979, through counselling I found my

own faith in the Lord. In 1985 I felt that the Lord called me into counselling. Back then counselling was only just becoming a trained

profession. Often Christian counsellors were thought of as well-meaning but ignorant (and sometimes dangerous) ‘do-gooders’. Referrals from GP’s,

Psychological Services or Social Services would never have happened. How

things have changed. And it is so encouraging that now, training at UCHM is equal to Counsellor Training courses within the Universities and colleges,

and to be a BACP accredited counselling service speaks for itself.

Only a matter of months after becoming a Christian I saw someone’s photos

of their trip to Israel. I knew I desperately wanted to go. It was as if a fire had been lit within me. It took 10 years to get there, (and Ken keeps

reminding me it was a once in a lifetime holiday) but how it changed and continues to change my faith. For me it brought such a reality about Jesus

and His Land. I learned what a difference it makes when you knew the context of Jesus’ words and how we can get a much deeper understanding

of what He was really saying. I continued studying when we got home. I

kept dropping the suggestion to Helga about UCHM taking a group to Israel and eventually it happened. The tours themselves have changed beyond all

recognition now, but it is always such an honour and privilege to show people round His Land. Roll on April 2020!

13

What is your favourite way to spend time when not working?

Watching cricket! I was brought up in a cricketing home and I still love it. I enjoy the strategies and the plans. I love being in my garden but

unfortunately as most of it is originally field the brambles put up a strong fight. I continue to study, exploring the Jewish roots of our faith and keeping up to

date with fresh archaeological discoveries in Israel

Do you have a favourite song? If so what is it? And why?

I love ‘There is a higher throne’ – because there will come a day when whatever pain, trauma or difficulties we have known in this life will be over.

And we will be around the throne of God absolutely lost in worship and praise. For me it feels as if that song has a real anointing of the Holy Spirit. I love

playing it yet feel as if what I play is pale copy of what that worship must

really sound like. “Hear Heaven’s voices sing, their thund’rous anthem rings through emerald courts and sapphire skies, their praises rise. All glory,

wisdom, pow’r, strength, thanks and honour are to God our King who reigns on high, forever more.”

What is your favourite scripture and why? Psalm 122 Someone who knew how much I wanted to go to Israel sent me a

card with this Scripture the week before I went! “I rejoiced with those who said to me,“Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Our feet are standing within

your gates, O Jerusalem. I’ve had the great privilege of being there over 25 times and those verses still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

when I walk into the gates. The verse is actually sculpted out of a block of

sandstone and stands on the grass just outside the old city walls. Second place goes to Psalm 137:5-6 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its

skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy

What is your favourite place and why? Apart from the obvious – it would be the Isle of Mull. We stay at Fidden Farm

where there are beautiful beaches and islets. We take Ken’s RIB (boat) so we can go out round Iona, Erraid, Staffa where we see seals, dolphins, puffins etc.

There seems such a peace down on the Ross of Mull. The question has been

raised whether this is due to its proximity to Iona which is known as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. And of course it’s said that God made

Scotland in case Israel didn’t work out!

14

What has been your favourite holiday and why?

I love anything in nature, so Mull is great, but after a busy two week tour in Israel it’s good to chill out down in Eilat. Ken discovered a small basic hotel in

the old city, next to the bus stop that goes down to Coral Beach. Eilat City big hotels are not where we want to be. So armed with snorkel, mask and fins, it’s

all about getting in the water. I’m not really a swimmer, but with the gear it’s

possible to view a new dimension of God’s creation that people wouldn’t normally see. The coral and the fish are amazing, the colours are riotous. I do

not understand how anyone can see all this and not believe in God.

What is your favourite animal?

Not difficult, Old English Sheepdogs! We have had 2 rescued boys but this time we’ve had a little girl from being a puppy. Ellie is now three. Or in the

natural world – I’d love to see an elephant. In the water, dolphins and reef rays.

Mitzpah Shalom 5 Shawfields Slaithwaite Dear All, I think everyone was aware, but if not, you will have gathered from this month’s team sheet that I have retired and Val has now become the new CEO of UCHM. I’m not disappearing altogether though, as when Joan Church retired as Chair of the Trustees in April, I became the new Chair. And (obviously!) I’ll still be involved in the Israel Tours too! Looking back at the journey the charity has made since it was formed in 1992 – it’s almost unrecognisable. Back then counselling was only just becoming a trained profession. Often Christian counsellors were thought of as well-meaning but ignorant (and sometimes dangerous) ‘do-gooders’. Referrals from GP’s, Psychological Services or Social Services would have been unthinkable. How things have changed. And it is so encouraging that now, Christian Counsellor Training at UCHM is equal to Counsellor Training courses within the Universities and colleges. BACP have also worked with us respectfully and accept our position and our professionalism. Some of you I have worked with for so many years, and some I have just been getting to know, but I want to say ‘thank you’ for working with me during your own part of the journey at UCHM. It has been a privilege to have worked with so many dedicated and loving people; trustees, managers, shop volunteers, all who take care of the Centre practically, admin volunteers, counsellors, trainers – the list goes on. My pending retirement had been really well planned and prepared for within the management team. I feel so incredibly blessed to have handed the reins over to Val. Her life / work experience has so prepared her for this role and we both know that the Lord has clearly called her to take over the running of UCHM. It has been an absolute delight to work with Val and get to know her so much better during the last three years. She is so very precious! The Lord has placed UCHM in very safe hands. The Lord has a future plan and purpose for the work and it is time for handing over the baton to the next generation. Thank you all for being a part of my journey and I pray that the Lord will bless, guide and strengthen you in your role within UCHM. Liz

Liz with a token of our appreciation and thankfulness for her

creation of UCHM and dedication of her work in counselling,

training and as CEO, and her organising of the Pilgrimage trips

to Israel. If you would like to send a message to Liz regarding

your time of knowing and working with her, please email this

message to [email protected] by Friday October 19th so that we

can put it together with others to present to Liz on the evening.

A Pensioner’s Psalm

Blessed are they who understand My faltering steps and shaking hand,

Blessed who know my ears today Must strain to catch the things they say

Blessed are they who seem to know

My eyes are dim, and my mind is slow Blessed are they who looked away

When tea was spilled on the cloth that day

Blessed are they with a cheery smile Who stop to chat for a little while Blessed are they who never say

‘You’ve told me that story twice today’

Blessed are they who make it known That I’m loved, respected and not alone And blessed are they who ease the days

Of my journey home, in loving ways
