Dear IGCN Members,

Thank you for your active participation and contribution in 2016. I am very pleased to report that, with all your support, we managed to implement all our key initiatives.

In 2016, we continued our focus on raising awareness and action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We introduced “Making Global Goals Local Business” being part of the UN Global Compact campaign globally. We participated in national dialogues on SDGs priority and indicators for Indonesia organized by the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS). We also participated in the first Indonesia Philanthropy Festival 2016 (IPFest’16). The sustainable

Foreword

development agenda is the next frontier for responsible practices, building new market opportunities, while ensuring environmental sustainability and social equity.

We successfully launched the Business and Human Rights Working Group (B&HRWG) that aims to promote the implementation of UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) into corporate values. We engaged in the development of National Action Plan organized by the National Committee on Human Rights (KOMNAS HAM). Starting 2016, we also embarked in a three-year collaborative project with Oxfam Indonesia and INFID to conduct assessment and capacity building for the implementation of UNGPs especially in Palm Oil Plantation industry.

As part of Business for Peace (B4P) initiatives, we continue to support the multi-year Interfaith Mass Wedding program for under-privileged families to obtain their marriage and birth certificates, which will enable them access to education, healthcare, public services and formal job opportunities. Supported by the Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Culture Affairs and Ministry of Social Welfare, this program is now extended to other islands.

In collaboration with UNESCO, Habitat for Humanity Indonesia, Indonesia Institute of Science (LIPI) and Asia Pulp

& Paper (APP Group), capacity building project on water management using innovative technology was conducted for the community in Pari Island, Kepulauan Seribu. It is expected the project will be extended this year.

To further promote the anti-corruption, we engaged with the Alliance for Integrity (AfIn) in Indonesia and sit in the Advisory Group.

Above all, continued efforts have been made in placing values and principles into the heart of companies. Increasingly, principled business is simply good business. But there is a long way to go, and we rely on you to help ensure that business is a positive force for the world.

Our sincere thanks to IGCN Boards for their continued contribution and to all IGCN Members for their commitment and actions in every single initiative and activity of 2016.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan created the UN Global Compact nearly two decades ago with the purpose to “give a human face to the global market”. Today, our founding mission is more important than ever.

The world is facing a complicated web of multi-dimensional, interconnected, systemic challenges, while the gap between rich and poor as well as protectionism is rising. The past has clearly shown that economic integration is crucial for advancing eace, sustainable development and human rights. And from a business perspective, modern-day success is built on the pillars of global cooperation and interdependence. Consequently, globalization must become a much more inclusive, human, respectful force that leaves no one behind.

The good news is that we have never had a more clear and compelling path forward for our world. With the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement in force, we have a powerful common agenda for achieving peace and prosperity on a healthy planet by 2030 - with an essential role spelled out for business in this transformation to a sustainable future. The SDGs provide a blueprint for how to address the complex challenges the world faces. But time is paling fast, with only 14 years to go!

After The Signature

The CommitmentParticipation in the UN Global Compact is a visible commitment to the implementation, disclosure, and promotion of ten universal principles. A company joining the initiative is expected to:• Make the UN Global Compact and its principles an integral

part of business strategy, day-to-day operations, and organizational culture;

• Incorporate the UN Global Compact and its principles in the decision-making processes of the highest-level governance body (e.g., Board);

• Take actions in support of UN goals and issues, including the Sustainable Development Goals;

• Communicate annually with its stakeholders on progress made to implement the principles, ideally integrated into the annual report or similar public document;

• Advance the UN Global Compact and the case for responsible business practices through advocacy and active outreach to peers, partners, clients, consumers,

and the public at large.• In addition to these actions, participating companies

are asked, upon endorsement, to make a regular annual fnancial contribution to help support the work of the Global Compact.

Companies that have signed on to the Global Compact commit to implementing the ten principles into their strategies and operations. However, small and large companies alike are sometimes uncertain about the right approach. While there is no single “correct”method or model, it is important that implementation of the ten principles is understood as a long-term process of continuous performance improvement.
