Storytellingisanimportantpieceoftheliteracypuzzle,It’sthroughbooks,books,morebooksandjournalwriting,thatchildrendevelopaloveoflanguagewhilepracticingtheirpre-readingandwritingskills.Acreativeconnectionismadewhentheyhaveanideaforastory,developthatideawithwords,havetheirwordswrittendownandlater,sharingtheirwords.Wemayeventry“actingthemout”inclass,givinganotherdimensiontotheirwords!
Morecreativeconnectionsaremadewhenchildrendrawwhattheyhavebuilt,asseeninthepicturesbelow.Beingabletodescribetoafriendwhatwasdoneandwhyisasignofreallyunderstandingtheprocess.
ThislastweekendgaveusaglimpseofSpringandjustintimebecauselastweek,intherain,thechildrenhelpedtoturnthesoilinourplanters.Nextweaddedsomesoilamendmentandafewday’slater(stillintherain)theyplantedmint,parsley,Rlowersandsomegarlic.Intheclass,wehadbeenwatchingtherootsandshootsthatwereleftoverfromasaladandwedecidedtoexperimentwithplantingthemtoo!Can’twaittoseeifthey’llgrowanothercrop?
Gardeningprovidessomanylearningopportunities,suchasnewvocabularywords,howtowaitpatiently,thecyclesoftheweathertonameafew,nottomentionthemanyJewishvaluesthatcanbewovenintotheconversationasthechildrenbecomepartnerswiththeearth,BritAdamahandwhentheclassisaskedtobecomeShomreiAdamah,guardiansoftheearthandofallgrowingplantsintheyard.
Weattempttodeepenthekitah’sconnectiontoIsraelbyvisitingthemapofIsraeleachdayandinvestigatewhereEmmahasbeenandwonderingwhatshewillseenext?EmmaissendingusdailyphotosandweusetheiPadtochecktheareaout.WeareintroducingmoreHebrewwordsinthekitahbylabelingmanyoftheareasweareineachandeveryday.
