Mt. Pilchuck Elementary earns top state honors for student achievement Three Lake Stevens Elementary Schools are among 413 schools across the state to receive a Washington Achievement Award for 2013. “The students, staff members and families of High- land, Glenwood and Mt. Pilchuck are truly deserving of this prestigious award,” said Superintendent Amy Beth Cook. “Administrators and staff members analyzed data and collaborated to provide support and interventions to students where needed. This was truly a team effort and I’m very proud of these schools.” The Washington Achievement Awards, now in their fifth year, are sponsored by the Office of Superin- tendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. Award winners are selected using the state’s Achievement Index and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver. “This achievement is the result of the joint efforts of our staff, students and parent community,” said Chris Larson, Principal of Mt. Pilchuck Elementary School. “As a staff, we analyze student data as teams and plan instruction together to meet the needs of each student. Students keep their own data notebooks, set and track academic and behavioral goals, and share these goals with their parents through student led conferences. It’s very much a team effort.” More information about the awards, including criteria and a list of winners: http://www.k12.wa.us/ EducationAwards/WashingtonAchievement. Executive Board Of Directors

Dear Mt. Pilchuck Families,

I cannot believe that the last months of school are upon us! I have truly enjoyed serving our school and its families this year. As the year comes to an end, I want to make sure that everyone knows how much I appreciate all the support I received throughout the year. There are not enough words, time or space to thank the many PTA volunteers for all the hard work they performed to make The Mountain the great school and community it is. This really is a great school with special families who make a difference in the lives of our students.

I want to thank the administration and entire staff for the continued support of the PTA and its pro-grams. We are lucky to have Mrs. Larson, Miss B and Miss Kim leading a fantastic group of teachers and staff educating our children. I want the teachers and staff to know that we support them and ap-preciate the jobs they do.

Finally, I want to thank the all the PTA committee chairs for a great year. I especially owe the rest of our executive committee much gratitude for all the hard work and dedication to our team − Marianne Colvin, Janet Raynor, Jenny Brooks, Stephanie Carr, and Rebecca Broadbent. I also wanted to thank Danyelle Lewis! Each of these people unselfishly contributed significant time and made serving as President for the PTA executive committee easier than I certainly thought it could be. Thanks ladies!

By the time you read this, a new executive committee will have been elected. You may even see some of the same faces. We ask that you continue to show the generous support to the new board that you showed us this year.

Best Regards! Liz Janssen, PTA President

4th Grade Musical:

“The Washington State Time Machine”

Tuesday, May 20th 7pm

Lake Stevens High School Performing Arts Center

By Mrs. Kurtenbach

Our fourth graders have been busily preparing for our own original “Washington State Time Machine” musical presentation on Tuesday, May 20th. This performance will be held at the Lake Stevens High School Performing Arts Center and will begin at 7:00 p.m. Every fourth grader has an important role in this amazing show. From being part of the xylophone orchestra to portraying an historic character in Washington State history, each part makes up a memorable performance in this fun musical event. How did it all happen? In January all the fourth graders got an overview of Washington State History, learning about important events and people spanning from the Ancient Paleo-Indian era to industrial times. They worked in pairs, writing paragraphs and illustrating pictures about these important events in Washington History. Mrs. Kurtenbach then took the paragraphs and created a script with Washington State History songs woven throughout. Also in the show are six fourth graders from Mount Pilchuck Elementary traveling through time in their time machine. Students who wanted to put in more of a commitment, have stayed after school to practice the lines and blocking for the show. We also have historian Tim McLaughlin giving all fourth graders insight on native American customs and Lewis and Clark. In the meantime, we have been working on the songs for the show during our regular fourth grade music time using our xylophone orchestra. Each fourth grade class will be performing two pieces in the concert. Some examples include our state song “Washington My Home” by Helen Davis and Woody Guthrie’s “Roll on Columbia.” We even will be sprinkling in a little guitar into the mix. We also combined PE and Music for one week in April to learn how to square dance! Some fourth graders are writing invitations to VIPs including guests from the Tulalip and Duwamish tribes and our Superintendent Dr. Amy Beth Cook. We are also painting and building sets with the support of some awesome parent volunteers. Members of the cast will also be performing “Riversong” from the show at the Lake Stevens School District’s Volunteer Tea on May 7th. By combining History of Washington State with music, the students will carry with them a deeper understanding of history in our state and how it impacted lives, changed the land, and brought us to where we are today. I am super proud of all our fourth graders’ hard work in preparing for this historic show.

GuitART for Music Education

Many of our students at Mt. Pilchuck are learning and loving to play the guitar! Our kids are fortunate to have a music pro-gram which is integrated into the curriculum and guitars are a

fantastic instrument in this goal. The music program still needs to purchase 15 new guitars. You can help with our up-

coming fundraiser called GuitART! Old, unplayable guitars are being transformed into art pieces by accomplished artists and some will be repurposed into functional pieces. There are a handful of art

docents working on pieces with classes, as well. We are excited to see what our artists deliver to us!

The GuitART pieces will be available for auction at Art Walk and also via an virtual event using Facebook.

After May 1st, you can go to www.facebook.com/Guitartformusic where these creations and more details will be unveiled leading up to Art Walk May 16.

Music Notes By Mrs. Kurtenbach

Did you know that the month of April is Jazz Appreciation month? Jazz is uniquely American, evolving out of Spirituals, Gospel, Blues to…Jazz! In grades first through third, we have been focusing on Jazz during April listening to Jazz musician great, Louis Armstrong. This Louisiana native helped popularize Jazz from his amazing trumpet improvised solos to his throaty scat singing. The students have been working on Jazz ideas including swing beat, improvisation and scat singing. Fifth graders are celebrating their music skills in culminating synergizing music per-formances. We are picking popular pieces and revamping them for guitars, xylo-phones, voice and drums. An example would be Bruce Springsteen’s new hit “High Hopes” being rearranged by Mrs. Poremba’s class. Having guitars in the music classroom has opened a new world for these students as they play chords, melo-dies and bass lines…kind of like a real rock band. We are hoping to perform our pieces at the Fifth Grade Graduation in June. Kindergarten continues to work on being tuneful, beatful, and artful as we develop musicianship through fun music games and Mother Goose Poetry. And fourth grade is getting ready for their music presentation, “The Washington State Time Machine,” coming up on May 20th. Music is a place where students express themselves creatively and kinesthetically. As Music Educator Edwin Gordon believes, there should be 6 senses, not 5: hearing, seeing, touching, tasting, smelling, and….moving! I learn best when I move and experience hands on learning. Music is just the place for that!

Kudos to Lake Stevens Ace Hardware A special thank you is due to our own hometown hardware store, Ace Hard-ware. Recently Ace donated over 500 packets of organic seeds for planting in our Panther Giving Garden, around our school, and for our student body. Owners Greg and Christine Egelstad are very supportive of Leader In Me at Mount Pilchuck and have visited our school during our Leadership Days. Christine is a board member of the Education Foundation, a member of chamber, and a citizen of Lake Stevens. She has had several opportunities to see and hear about our wonderful program. The Egelstad’s believe the Leader In Me program lays a nice foundation for our students’ future and our school. Ace also just donated paint for sets for our own “Washington State Time Machine” musical presentation coming up on Tuesday, May 20th at the Lake Stevens High School PAC.

Thank you Ace Hardware for your generous donations!
