The Nyholm Lectures Last week we followed the progress as Peter Rutledge took his Lecture “Chemicals are Good for you!” across the state. Peters journey continued this week as he visited Dubbo. Imagine a university campus of one main building with a few rooms annexed from it. Then add a total Science Faculty of one staff member –and you have CSU Dubbo (life at other NSW University Campuses doesn’t seem so challenging now does it?).

The NSW RACI was welcomed by CSU Science staff member Patricia Logan-Sinclair, who assisted in the setting up of our Dubbo lecture. The benefit of this isolated campus also meant it had the capability of web casting the lecture (it has been web casting for years for lecturers who are primarily located at CSU’s other Campuses). The Lecture began with 25 students physically present, this number was increased to over 50 - with the late arrival of Gilgandra HS students. Representatives from Dubbo Distance Education also attended – they are responsible for the education of school students unable to attend school due to geographic isolation in the central west, so they teach via teleconferencing, correspondence and Web Casting). Our first experiment with the world of Nyholm Web Casting was, for the most part successful – the line dropped out only once and we were able to reach students unable to leave their schools due to their assessment commitments. The students were very interested in Peter’s work – asking about the particulars of his Antibiotics research, and had nominated a student to formally thank Peter for making the long journey to visit them. The Teachers who attended were very keen to have the exact instructions for the demonstrations Peter presented, and the distance education Teachers are certainly interested in having the lecture available for their many scattered students when we plan the lecture tour next year.

The photo left hand side shows Peter explaining the cyclic structure of antibiotics and whilst the photo on the right show Peter by our Marvellous molecules banner with some gratefully accelerated Year 9 students from Dubbo Junior HS Campus – (this photo was used with permission of the students and the school). One lecture remains – this will be held after the school holidays in Mittagong – although plans are already afoot for the lectures next year. The lecture has received much praise this year, and has certainly been sorely missed. Below is an extract from one letter of thanks – it sums up the appreciation for the lecture best: Hi; Thanks on behalf of my students for the lecture the other week. My students really appreciated the talk and the enthusiasm of Peter in his explanations. One of the reasons I wanted them to attend was to gain an understanding of the way a chemist works and what sorts of thing a chemist may be involved in. This was excellent.……….I hope that it can be arranged again next year and gain more support. Thanks Bruce Barker Illawarra Christian School - Tongarra

Members in the Media This week “A Current Affair” viewers would have been able to see a RACI member Steven Bottle discuss the benefits of biodegradable plastic bags. Now Steven Bottle is now apart of the Queensland branch – but we don’t hold that against him! It is great that the applications of our research and work are presented to the community. For members interested in the story can check it out at http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=589786 – The interview isn’t included in the summary of the story. However members interested should see the footage of the whole story linked from the web page.

Young Tall Poppy Science Awards open The Tall Poppy Campaign was established by the Australian Institute of Policy & Science to promote awareness of Australia’s intellectual achievements. An important component of the Campaign is the Young Tall Poppy Science Awards, which recognise the achievements of outstanding young researchers in the sciences including physical, biomedical, applied sciences, engineering and technology. The Awards are made on a state-by-state basis and in 2008 will be made in New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Victoria. The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards recognise the achievements of younger researchers (up to 40 years of age). The Awards not only acknowledge the recipients’ achievements but also provide them with an opportunity to demonstrate their value as role models by promoting and encouraging an interest in science among school students and the wider community. Previous Award winners have encompassed fields as diverse as cancer research, mental health, environmental engineering, water quality, gene therapy, immunology, fuel technology, climate change, chronobiology, physiotherapy, inorganic chemistry and information technology. Nominations will be accepted from all areas including universities, research institutes, government agencies and the corporate sector. Nominations open Thursday 5 June. Nominations close Friday 1 August 2008. (Awards announced on Thursday 23 October).

The RACI R&D Topics conference, initiated in 1992 by Professor Neil Barnett (School of Biological & Chemical Science, Deakin University), is based on a similar conference for postgraduate students held by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK).

R&D Topics is unique in that it is a conference attended and organised by postgraduate students and early career researchers, with supervisors and companies welcome to attend. Previous conferences, hosted by various universities around Australia, including Flinders University (2007), Wollongong University (2006) Monash University (2005), University of Melbourne (2004) and the University of Western Sydney (2003), have registered over 100 delegates in the fields of analytical and environmental chemistry, with students highlighting their research through oral seminars and poster sessions. The long running status (now in its 16th year) of the R&D Topics is a tribute to the great success of this conference format, with many former students now attending the conference as supervisors.

This year it is being held again in NSW! Macquarie University Saturday, December 6 - Tuesday, December 9
