Dear Parents and Friends of SGS,
We are at the end of another term! It has been a wonderful
term filled with activity, events and especially learning.
I would like to thank everyone for your involvement in much of
this, as parents, and especially thank the students and staff for
their contributions to everything that has happened across this busy term.
We have recently experienced a particularly wet time which has impacted on our Athletics
Carnivals but has also been a blessing for our country-side. Our Athletics Carnivals will
now be held in Term 3, Secondary on Tuesday, 19 July and Primary on Tuesday, 26 July.
I wish you all a safe, refreshing holiday and look forward to your return to an exciting
second semester.
Paul Smart
Principal
Primary News from Mr Feeney Unfortunately, due to the wet weather, the Primary Athletics Carnival scheduled for this week was postponed,
and has now been re-scheduled for Tuesday, 26 July at the Scone Sports Complex. This is in Week 2 of Term 3, and will involve all students in Years 2-6.
Congratulations again to all Primary students who competed at the recent HRIS Public Speaking Gala Day,
held at St Philips Christian College in Cessnock. It really was a wonderful day and a very exciting start to what we
hope will become a regular opportunity for students from HRIS schools to participate in and enjoy. Our students received the following awards:
First Place: Impromptu Reading: Year 5 - Daniel O’Regan Second Place: Impromptu Reading: Year 4 - Braedon Wallace
Poetry: Year 4 - Peter MacCallum Third Place: Prepared Speech Year 4 - Sofia Edlington
Highly Commended:
Bible Reading: Year 4 - Sarah Clark Year 5 - Alexis Walsh
Year 6 - Lochlan McClean Impromptu Reading: Year 6 - Sam Barry
Poetry: Year 5 - Joshua Crowther
Year 6 - Prunella Hayes
Mrs Kelly and I were very proud of every student and delighted to see the strong skills our team were able to display across all areas of the competition. The students were also thrilled to have an opportunity before they left
to ‘ride the slide’, normally reserved for special award winners at the SPCC-C school.
I would like to say a heart-felt thank you to Mrs Tesoriero and the Primary SRC
for their efforts in organising what was a fantastic Primary Social last week. Our students raised $900 to contribute to the IPSHA Biennial Fundraiser called
‘Walk around the World’, which is a combined effort from IPSHA schools across Australia to support the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Our
students walked (danced) a total of 951kms, to add to the total walked, run, stepped, hopped or danced by the students in other IPSHA schools. The latest
available data shows that students in IPSHA schools have ‘walked’ (or danced) a
total of 18, 684 km against Diabetes, and raised over $100,000. A superb team effort!
I do want to acknowledge and sincerely thank the Primary staff for their dedicated efforts over this term. There
has been a great deal happening, ‘on stage’ and ‘behind the scenes’, with teachers involved in many areas of
important PD and valuable collaborative professional learning.
I trust all staff, students and their families enjoy a very well earned holiday break, and I look forward to hearing some exciting stories about holiday adventures, when we are together again, re-energised and ready for the
beginning of Semester Two.
Good Humour for the Week
What’s green, has big eyes, and makes a loud noise? A frog horn! What’s the laziest mountain in the world? Mt Ever-rest!
What do you get when you cross an insect with a rabbit? Bugs Bunny! What would happen if pigs could fly? Bacon would go up!
Congratulations to Lachie Bennett (Year 3 Blue), Mia Grabham (Year 3 Blue), Eliza Bull (Year 5 Gold), Cormac McClean (Year 1 Gold), Sienna Johnson (Year 3 Blue), and Darcy Bragg (Kindergarten Blue), who are all
celebrating birthdays this week. I do wish each of these students all the best as they enjoy this special day and share the time with their family and friends.
From the Chaplain
I spent some time this week talking with students about particular ‘mindsets’ (ways of thinking) that are applicable
to different aspects of our lives. While we spent a lot of time talking about ‘growth mindsets’, where one considers
the possibilities of achievement through effort and application, we also spoke about a ‘servant mindset’ that is so
necessary to having fulfilling relationships. How do we develop a servant’s mindset? The first way of developing the
‘servant mindset’, we see from Philippians 2:5-8, is to come to an understanding of how we have been ‘served’;
what has been done for us. The second is actually to place ourselves in situations where we learn how to practice
serving others; to experience what it means to serve.
We are invited to follow a Saviour who, rather than standing on His own divine rights, came to earth to serve, rather
than be served. We learn that Jesus didn't grasp at His God-given rights to remain in the comforts of heaven. But
He made Himself nothing, taking the nature of a servant and humbled Himself to death by crucifixion. We see that
although Jesus had every right to be worshipped and adored, He gave up that right and chose to die for us. When
we grasp how we have been served, and develop this same mind as Christ Jesus, we are far better equipped to
serve others.
Weekly Chapel Bible passages and relevant links can be found at twitter.com/sgschapel
In Prayer this week:
Reflect on: Philippians 2:5-8
Give thanks for: Rain!; God’s goodness in sending us Jesus, the resurrection and the life, so we can have a way to
be friends with God; A productive school term of learning and growing; Parents, teachers and supporters who truly
care for us
Pray for: Our Government and the next season of politics in Australia, that equitable outcomes abound for all
Australians; A safe and restful holiday period; For the school building project; For families and students who are ill
or struggling at the moment; Year 4 and Year 11 students; For your son or daughter’s teacher/s! (specific prayer
requests can be sent to [email protected] to be prayed for by our weekly prayer group- not published in
newsletter)

Tales from The Yellow Cottage This is the last week of Term 2, I would like to take this opportunity
to wish everyone a restful and happy holiday. We will return to
preschool on Monday, 18 July 2016. Thank you for all of your
contributions over this term. We look forward to seeing all the
children and their smiling faces back next term.
It has been dress up week this week at The Yellow Cottage. The
children were very excited to turn up each day as different
characters. The children have been asking us for a chance to dress up
and come to preschool, so this became a very special and fun week.
The teachers also joined in the dress up theme.
“Reading aloud is the single most effective way to engage and
communicate with a child while at the same time teaching the child
the conventions of printed language and communication.” -Ambika
Gopalakrishnan . Can I encourage you to spend some time during the
holidays reading to your children? This is a lovely, relaxing way to
spend quality time with your child. It is also a great thing to do as part of preparing your child for the transition to
school. The Premiers Readers Challenge Book list is a always a good reference for excellent children’s literature.
The following link will take you to the K-2 list. https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html
Please remember to name all items brought to The Yellow Cottage. i.e. clothes, hats, drink bottles, lunch boxes,
bags. This will help your child to access their belongings more independently and help staff assist them more
expediently! Our lost property basket has been overflowing. Please take time to check the lost property before the
holiday break to make sure none of the items belong to your child.
Next term we will be introducing the ‘Skoolbag’ app to our families. This app will be set up especially for The
Yellow Cottage and will used to send reminders, messages and permission notes. Moving away from paper notes is
part of commitment to being a sustainable service. The app is used by Scone Public School and Scone Grammar
School and it is very easy to use and will help to streamline our communication with all of our families.
We are currently organising the re-enrolment of children currently attending Preschool and once that is complete
we will offer placements for new enrolments in 2017. Please reply to the email asking you for your re-enrolment
details. If you or someone you know, maybe a friend or relative, has a child who would like to come to The Yellow
Cottage next year, please make sure they have filled out an application for enrolment. These are available on the
SGS Website - www.sgs.nsw.edu.au.
Our term finishes on Friday 24 June 2016 — this is a week earlier than most schools and preschools.
Important Dates:
July 27 2016 - JD’s World of Magic Show 2.00pm. Cost is $7.50 per child.
HSC Ancient History Students at Sydney University Year 12 Ancient History students, Emily Mc Donald, Cheyenne Wood and Hannah Beiboer spent two days at lectures
provided by the History Teachers’ Association of NSW in preparation for their HSC. The lectures, at Sydney University,
were directly related to units of study and were delivered by experts in Archaeology and Ancient History. Of note
were insights into the Temples built by Akhenaten at East Karnak, interesting ideas about Sparta and its art, and
excellent information about new archaeological interpretations of houses and inscriptions at Pompeii. The sights of
Vivid were also enjoyed on Friday evening.

Year 12 Hospitality Excursion to Muse Restaurant On the evening of Friday, 17 June, the Year 12 Hospitality class attended a fine dining experience at Muse Restaurant
at Hungerford Hill in Pokolbin. Each student had the tasting menu involving a series of courses including food items
such as 70 hour cooked Wagu beef and the famous Muse Coconut dessert as well as many other delicious creations.
These students have now operated the Grammar Grind Cafe since Term 4 2015 when they took over from the Year
12 class of 2015. They have also volunteered to assist at many of the school functions in 2015-2016. I would like to
thank them for their hard work over this time and appreciate their dedication to Scone Grammar School.
Mrs Tania Lambley.
Year 10 History Students Recognised in Honouring Vietnam Veterans Competition
In Term One, Year 10 History students completed assessment tasks related to their study of Australia’s
involvement in the Vietnam War. Part of this was to research and reflect upon the contributions of Australians who
fought in this war and produce writing or creative responses to two major questions. This required research about
specific forces or individuals who served and also a reflection upon why it is important to remember their service.
This was also part of a national competition being run by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to recognise the 100
Years of Anzac and to honour the more than 500 Servicemen and Women who died in the Vietnam conflict and
those who served.
Students in Year 10 worked hard on their tasks and there were 11 entries for the competition from the group.
These included Alexandra Cottle, Anna Atkinson, Tristan Taylor, Luke Edwards, Phoebe Smith, Philipa Steedman,
Noah Folpp, Sara Simpson, Chloe Flanagan and Lara Jeffries. These students have been presented with a
certificate recognising their effort.
However, the film produced by Lleyton Hails was chosen as a winning entry for the New England Region.
He will now travel to Canberra for 3 days (17-19 August) to receive his award and to attend services
commemorating the Battle of Long Tan. Congratulations to Lleyton and to all these students for the terrific effort
they made!

SGS Swept Away Art Show – 2016 Our Annual art show will again take place during Week 1 in Term 4. The week will end with a cocktail evening for
parents on Friday, 14 October and the exhibition will be open on Saturday, 15 October to also view and purchase
artworks. We want to celebrate the creative work of the students, teachers and community members by invitation
in our SGS community.
Theme – Swept Away
The theme this year is Swept Away which can be interpreted in many and varied ways. Already students have been
thinking, planning and making artworks that display this theme in original and different ways.
Guest Speaker – Hanna Kay
We are very lucky to have local artist Hanna Kay be very generous with her time and agree to be our guest
speaker this year. Hanna is an internationally renowned artist and is currently exhibiting at Muswellbrook Regional
Arts Centre. She is one of three artists exhibiting in a show titled Three Women went to China. The exhibition ends
on 24 July. Entry is free and would make a great holiday outing!
Staff Artists
Our school motto this year is “Add a twist to your life”. We have a fabulous group of staff who have volunteered to
do just that and work together to create an artwork which responds to the theme of Swept Away and will be
auctioned at the cocktail evening. These artists are working in groups or pairs and are stepping out of their
comfort zone. They are taking to this new challenge with gusto. The staff artists include;
The Yellow Cottage teachers
Miss Thomas and Miss Dowdell
Mr Holland and Mr Bustos
Mrs Saunders and Mrs Patterson
Mrs Hollis and Mrs Broomfield
Mrs Saunders and Mrs Patterson
Mr Smart and Rev Nate
We look forward to seeing the exciting Artworks they create. If you see these artists you might like to chat to them
about how they are interpreting the theme of swept away.

Under 10s Knights All Schools Knockout
On 16 June 2016, the under 10s Rugby League Team
travelled to Newcastle to compete in the Knights All
Schools’ Knockout.
The team consisted of Daniel Crowther, Matthew
Edwards, Harry Faulkner, Nick Gallagher, Max Patterson, Clayton Porter, Sasha Studdy, Cooper Wilson, Kael
Saw, Finn Deasy, Lachlan Hails, Angus Beard and Nate Hughs.
In their first game they played Tanilba Bay, winning convincingly— three tries to one. Max Patterson was
unstoppable scoring all three tries. The second game was much closer with the team winning three tries to two
against Wirreanda. Lachie Hails scored two great tries; one from a long range kick return. Max Patterson also
scored another, adding to his tally for the day. The third game was against Nulkaba, resulting in a narrow one-
nil victory our way. Nick Gallagher scored a flying try from a great cross-field kick. The next game turned out to
be a tough one against a strong Valentine side; going down three tries to one. Max crossed again for our only
try of the game. The last game for the day was against Biddabah; resulting in a one-all draw. Lachie scoring a
good try to level the scores.
Overall, the team finished second in the pool. The team should be congratulated on a fantastic effort and all the
boys should be proud of how they played and conducted themselves during the day. I would like to thank
Andrew Edwards for giving up his time to train the team and coach the boys on the day. I would also like to
thank Brett Hails, Darren Crowther and all the supporters who came down to cheer the team on.

Former Scone Grammar School Foundation Student Honoured with Significant Award
Mr Simon Frame, a former Scone Grammar School foundation student, was recently invested as a Knight of
Honour in the Brandenburg Bailiwick of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, becoming the first ex-student of
Scone Grammar School to receive this significant honour.
This was the first time that a formal Investiture of a Knight of Honour of the Johanniter Order has been held in
Australia and also the first time that an Australian of non-German heritage has been so honoured.
The NSW Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia officiated at the investiture, which was held at All Saints
Anglican Church in Hunters Hill on Saturday, 21 May, and which featured both Lutheran and Anglican
contributions to the service.
The investiture was attended by Knights of Malta and Knights of the Venerable Order of St John,
Parliamentarians, by the German Consul-General to Sydney representing the German Government, and
representatives from St John’s Ambulance.
This award, which is a great honour for Mr Frame, also involves varied duties in the service of the poor and
humanity at large - duties involving everything from service in soup kitchens to major fundraisers for Hospitaller,
humanitarian and ambulance services around the world.
Mr Frame commented after the Investiture, that he was both humbled and honoured to be invested as a Knight
of the Church, and to join these Christian Knights Hospitaller and their time-honoured Order.
We extend our congratulations and very best wishes as a School community.
