Volume. 6 Issue. 10
Friday 2nd February 2018
A new issue every fortnight on Bolingbroke Post!
Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
As you know, Spring term 1 is the shortest term of the academic year, however we have, as ever, managed to fit
in an enormous array of events, activities and achievements which we are immensely proud of, and all before half
term!
There are so many events that I would like to mention,
please read on and visit our website to see all of the
stories in detail. The most notable event I would like to
mention is the Bolingbroke Academy School Production
of ‘Beauty & The Beast’ which yet again was a sell out
production with the most sensational performances from
our pupils. The Performing Arts team worked extremely
hard to produce this well know musical, with pupils
involved not only on the stage and in the musical band,
but also backstage, sound & lighting, food & beverages,
front of house and hair & make up - this is truly a whole
school production and my heartfelt thanks and
congratulations go to all those involved.
In other news, next week sees us host our inaugural
Charities Week, this is a great initiative that we are very excited to host, please read of for full details - we have
so many thrilling events taking place, all in aid of a very good cause!
Our Sixth form recruitment drive has had very positive results with a large number of internal and external
applicants for one of the coveted 100 places that we offer. We are very lucky to have such a thriving Sixth Form
with a specialism in the Sciences and strong facilitating subjects, as well as a large number of extra curricular
activities, trips to Universities and Exhibitions and an excellent speakers programme.
Watch this space for news of who is elected Head Boy & Head Girl as well as those elected to the Student
prefect body - to be announced in the next Edition of the Courageous Hound!
Lastly, Spring Term 1 snapshots will be emailed out next Wednesday via Bolingbroke Post so please look out for
them.
Best wishes for a restful half term,
Ms C Edis
Principal

A spell was cast over Bolingbroke Academy on Wednesday
31st January, the opening night of this year’s musical “Beauty
and the Beast”. With a spectacular cast featuring actors from
Year 7 right the way up to Year 12, and a phenomenal band
made up of both teachers and pupils playing the original
Broadway arrangements - needless to say, the show was
truly stunning. Audience members were met with wonderful
food prepared by Mr Leather and his Year 11 Team, as well
as ice cream and cocktails kindly served up by the Parents’
Association.
The performance itself was punctuated by rapturous
applause, laughter, and the odd tear as we followed the
timeless tale of inner beauty, magic and love. Those who
attended commented on some particular highlights: the
moving rendition of “Home” sung by Belle (Nyashia Calder),
the climactic spectacle of “Be Our Guest” led by Lumiere
(Jess Ward), and the hilarious evil sidekicks Gaston and
LeFou (Manuel Alvarez and Eliza Michel-Finch).
The props, costume and makeup teams did an amazing job,
especially in the transforming our wonderful Beast (Dexter
Greenwood) and making our magical turning-book set
design come to life.
Beauty and the Beast played until Friday 2nd February and
was fully sold out for all performances - a real triumph.

BOLINGBROKE & THE ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION
On Thursday 25th January, Bolingbroke hosted the South West London heat of the English Speaking Union public
speaking competition. Pupils from Bolingbroke were joined by teams from Putney High School and King's College
School. Atticus Jackson and Charlotte Howcroft took the role of speaker, each delivering a 5 minute speech. Atticus
gave a fabulous speech on 'Is the pen mightier
than the sword?' using historical examples of the
church's power as well as the success of the re-
cent #metoo campaign to convince the audience
that it is indeed the pen that is most mighty.
Charlotte spoke with great passion on 'Harry
Potter - has he stood the test of time 20 years
on?'. Charlotte's impressive knowledge of the
Harry Potter series and its wider wizarding world
astounded the audience and the way she highlight-
ed Rowling's confidence at dealing with key teen
issues of family, love, friendships and death made
a compelling argument.
Jess Ward and Ivy Madoc Jones took the roles of
chairperson for the evening: introducing the
speakers, summarising their key ideas and creating a warm and friendly environment for all. Tom Cannane and Oghale
Erikigho were tasked with questioning speakers from other schools on their chosen topic to further the audience's
understanding and challenge the opinion of the speaker. Both pupils demonstrated excelled listening skills and posed
insightful questions to their speakers. Bolingbroke Team 1 - Jess Ward, Atticus Jackson and Oghale Erikgho came in
second place overall. Well done!

SIXTH FORM NEWS Laura Wyld’s Visit to the Sixth Form
On Monday the 29th of January, the entire Sixth Form were privileged to experience the visit of the politician,
Baroness Laura Wyld. Baroness Wyld, a graduate of the University of Cambridge, has risen through the political
ranks from being advisor to the former Prime Minister David Cameron, to becoming the second youngest Peer in
the House of Lords in June last year. She is dedicated to changing young lives and mental health, even though she
admitted that it can be challenging and scary putting forward such proposals in front of an audience of much older
and experienced politicians. After discussing her interesting journey to Westminster, Laura opened up the floor to
questions from the Sixth Formers. A great many interesting and stimulating questions were asked, on hot topics
such as Brexit, diversity in politics, and child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing, a topic of great interest to
her. As the mother of three young children she discussed juggling jobs and kids at the same time. Overall, she was
a brilliant guest to have in our school, providing students with an insightful stimulus to provoke an interest in
politics.

CADET WINTON FENCING TOURNAMENT
Around mid December, each year, one of the most important team
competitions of England's fencing calendar takes place at the Sports
Academy Millfield, in Somerset. The competition, Cadet Winton, is a
team fencing event, set up 30 years ago by Sir Nicholas Winton and his
brother Bobby, which pits various English regions in all 3 weapons (Sabre,
Foil and Epee).
Each UK region sends 6 teams of 3 or 4 fencers each (mens and womens,
in each weapon). One region, the one with most wins gets the Cadet
Winton Award for the year. The 30th edition was held on December
16th & 17th 2017 with the London Region Team winning the trophy.
Two Bolingbroke Academy students were on the epee team this year;
David Farmanfarmaian - Men, and Ariana Farmanfarmaian - Women) for the third year in a row.
Reflecting their contribution to the London team, over the years, David and Ariana were given the honour of
accepting the Winton Cadet trophy on behalf of London Region, from the children of Bobby Winton himself, and
they get to keep it for the next year.
A little British history: Sir Nicholas George Winton MBE was a
Brit ish humanitar ian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Nicholas_Winton) who organised the rescue of 669 children,
most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia on the eve of the
Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech
Kindertransport. This was not widely known until his death, at
which point he was named as the British Schindler by the U.K.
media. For those who are not familiar with WW2 the
Kindertransport (German for "children's transport") was an
organised rescue effort that took place during the nine months
prior to the outbreak of the Second World War (https://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindertransport). The United Kingdom
took in nearly 10,000 predominantly Jewish children from
Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, and the Free City of
Danzig. The children were placed in British foster homes, hostels, schools and farms. Often they were the only
members of their families who survived the Holocaust.[1]
Besides being a humanitarian, Nicholas Winton and his brother Bobby were also a fencer and the Cadet Winton
competition honours both their names and his saving of so many young lives.
We are hugely proud of Bolingbroke Academy students not only being selected for such an important fencing
competition but also being selected, by their teammates, for receiving the trophy on the 30th anniversary of a
prize honouring such an humanitarian.

YEAR 12 TRIP TO KRAKOW, POLAND
We arrived in Kraków early Saturday morning
and delved straight into a three hour walking
tour of the city. Our tour was filled with facts
and anecdotes as well as interesting folk
stories, it was so interesting to see the famous
land marks - ranging from the Main Square to
St.Mary’s Basilica. This tour was shortly
followed by meeting with a Holocaust survivor
- we all found it very sad and quite hard to
listen to at times. But I do have to say, seeing
Alex C interacting with the survivor in polish
and having him translate some words of
wisdom from her really made us appreciate all
the opportunities we have in our life. That
evening we enjoyed a lovely traditional Polish dinner and got time to bond with our peers as well as share
our highlights from the day.
The second day was probably the hardest but also the most interesting for us. We got the opportunity to
visit Aushwitz - Birkenau Concentration Camp, we didn’t
know what to expect and the uncertainty was a heavy
burden for us. In between these old buildings,
surrounded by people taking pictures it was really hard
to believe that at this place placed in the middle of
beautiful and harmless scenery, humans were cruelly
murdered, tortured and experimented on. There are
truly no words that can sum up this experience for all of
us but I can say on behalf of my year group and teachers,
that we are greatly thankful for everything we have in our
life.
Personally, this trip for me will always be a very
memorable one. We shared many good experiences but
overall, we are glad to live in the day and age we do
where freedom of speech and belief is possible. I would
also like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Oliver
and Miss Austin for taking us! We know how much hard
work and effort went into planning this trip but we are all
so thankful.

NCS Challenge for Years 11 and 12
We have managed to secure a discount for this fantastic summer challenge but places must be
booked by Friday 2nd February to pay £35 instead of £50.
Most year 11 pupils met Emma from NCS on Friday and completed an interest form but parents
need to book through the website to gain the discount and secure a place.
Working through physical, personal and creative challenges, NCS is an experience which
empowers young people to build skills and confidence to get ahead in work and life, whilst
engaging with their local area. The programme spans over 18 days and is part-residential,
with many different starting dates throughout June, July and August. It has been specifically
designed for year 11/12 students and is broken into three parts:
1. Adventure: A week of outdoor adventure where young people bond as a team through
physical challenges and take part in activities such as rock climbing, hiking and canoeing.
2. Discovery: A week living in university accommodation; participants learn skills favoured by em-
ployers and universities, whilst practicing independent living.
3. Be the change: Within their teams, young people will pitch and deliver their own social
action project to make a difference in their community.
NCS develops young people’s leadership, teamwork and communication skills, builds confidence,
increases independence, and provides experiences which are invaluable for CVs and UCAS
personal statements.
We highly recommend this unique and valuable opportunity and hope you will encourage your son
or daughter to take part. Please visit www.ncsthechallenge.org for more information and to book a
place. If you have any questions please contact Emma on 07341 563906
or alternatively email on [email protected]
