September 22,2010 Dear Parents, This month our school is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. We will spend this month learning about different Hispanic customs and traditions. In addition to all the fun school events planned, our class will be working on fun projects of our own. Below is the Hispanic Heritage Project due dates and activities. MANDATORY PROJECTS: DOLL & POSTER 1) HISPANIC HERITAGE DOLL Project Description: Each child will take home a paper cut-out doll to dress- up and decorate with the traditional costume from their native country. We encourage the children to be as creative and original as possible. You're welcome to use fabric, buttons, yarn, etc ... on your cut-out doll. Before you decorate your doll, make sure to cut-out the doll and glue it onto sturdy material such as cardboard. Heritage dolls are due on October 1ih. If you would like to see some samples of dolls from previous years, they will be on display in my office. Come by my room to see them. © 2) HISPANIC HERITAGE POSTER/PRESENTATION Project Description: Create a large, bright poster describing your native country. Make sure to include facts about your native country. Please add information regarding traditional foods, 'main products sold, language spoken, country's capital, population, picture of the country's flag, traditional music and dances, customs, and traditions. Your child must be able to present their poster to the class and talk about it. Posters are all also due on October iz". This project is worth three Social Studies grades! One grade is for the presentation, one for the doll, and one for the poster. Project due date: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 NO EXCEPTIONS! ************************************************************************************ OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES NATIVE COUNTRY DRESS-UP DAY Project Description: Students are encouraged to wear the traditional costume from their native country. The children will present their costume to the class and must be able to talk about their costume and its origin. Dress-up day is Tuesday, Oct. 1ih. This is not mandatory. SHARING INTERNATIONAL FOODS Project Description: Students are welcome to bring in any native food or treats from their country to share with the class. Please see me if you wish to bring a special dish for the class. You can also sign up to bring a special dish by the classroom door. I will post the sign up sheet there. This is not mandatory. Drop off foods by 11:30 a.m. on October 12th. We will start our celebration at 12:00 p.rn.
