November 2015
Dear Parish Family,
As most of you know, Donna and I just returned from a wonderful pilgrimage to the Holy Land sponsored by
the Diocese of East Tennessee. Returning from another country makes one thankful to live in America. Israel
looks like a very modern and prosperous country on the surface, but after a few days one realizes that all is
not well even though everything looks shiny and bright on the outside. Freedoms that we take for granted,
like which roads we wish to drive on, or where we wish to travel or even where one worships, is greatly
restricted for our Palestinian brothers and sisters. We have a lot to be thankful for in this country and often
perhaps we never really think about our freedom until we live in or visit other countries and see, first hand,
how others live.
November is a time when we think a lot about thanksgiving. In the past, Thanksgiving was a busy time
preparing for the big feast and being together as a family. For most, it was time joy and celebration. These
days we have the family and we have the feast, but we have to schedule activities around the football games
and shopping for the Black Friday specials. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is less about giving thanks than it is
about taking on the worldly and commercial patterns of other holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day.
But forgetting to give thanks is not a modern problem. Remember the story about Jesus curing 10 lepers and
only one returned to give thanks? As we begin this holiday season and we become so very busy, let us not
forget to give thanks each day for all that God has given us. It just takes a few moments in the morning or the
evening to thank God for each day. We take so much for granted in this country, so in this time of
thanksgiving, let us take time to give thanks for our freedoms, our health, our families and even our church.
As we give thanks during this month of November, let us not forget that
Sunday, November 1, is All Saints’ Day. It is also Commitment Sunday, the
day when we ask that you bring your completed pledge card to church and
offer it to God in joyful thanksgiving for all that God gives us each day.
Faithfully,
Fr. Ken+

As I write this, the Barbeque is underway and I've been
thinking back on the 45 years we've been involved in this
undertaking. It was the summer of 1970 and Hamblen
County was celebrating its Centennial. Folks coming into
town would need something to eat. We, All Saints’, set up a
tent on ground now occupied by the ASCS parking lot
and behind where Burger King now sits. The "crazy
Episcopalians" prepared, all chopped by hand, and sold
sandwiches downtown for an entire week. It was publicity or
evangelism or, perhaps, sheer lunacy but a new tradition was
born!
The proceeds from the BBQ have helped us pay for the
parish hall and church buildings, donate over $100,000. to
community outreach and to pay our commitment to the
diocese.
Probably, from my standpoint, the greatest blessing gained
from the BBQs has been the "getting to know" each
other. The act of working shoulder-to-shoulder with one
another for a common good builds community and fosters
friendships.
We are presented with another opportunity to work
together for a common good. By pooling our God-given
resources through the Stewardship Campaign, we can build a
proper nest-egg to attract and bring a new priest to All Saints’.
The Search Committee is hard at work checking off those
goals prescribed in the search process. Now that the parish
study has been done, they will be publishing those results on
our church web-site. Any prospective candidates will be
looking at our web-site to determine what we are about. They
will also be looking to see if we are financially stable. In order
for our place in Gods kingdom to grow, we need to grow in
stewardship. Consider very prayerfully your gift back to the
Lord through All Saints. Join with your brothers and sisters to
move our congregation forward in the Lord.
Your servant in His work,
Sarah
And speaking of the BBQ…
Mathematics of Freeing
the All Saints’ General Budget
from Dependency on BBQ Income
In its best years the All Saints ‘BBQ has netted $25,000 annually. For one hundred pledging families or individuals this equates to $250 each. Which further equates to an additional $125 each twice a year in May and October. The same funds could be achieved by an increase of $5 per week per 100 pledges. $5 x 52 weeks x 100 pledges = $26,000

The first Sunday in November you will find new
UTO boxes available in a basket in the Parish Hall.
The last one you have may be full again, falling to
pieces, or missing. Mine is missing and I think
there is change in it!
For those of you who are new to All Saints’, the
United thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal
Church for the mission of the entire church. It was
begun by the ECW over one hundred years ago to
support missionaries abroad and has grown ever
since. The nickels, dimes and quarters that each of
us and our family members drop in the box daily
are an outward sign of thanksgiving. There is
always at least one thing I can find to be grateful
to God for, even on bad days. The monies donated
Episcopal churches all around the world are
collected by the national UTO organization and
distributed annually in the form of grants to
Episcopal missions and churches, and their minis-
tries in developing world, as well as here at home.
Put your UTO box in a readily accessible place so
each person in your home can give daily thanks in
a way that will help others less fortunate.
Judy Bartholomew, Chair
The week after Sunday, November 15, we will deliver the foods to Central Services that have been collected during the Thanksgiving food drive. Even though Central Services does not provide Thanksgiving food baskets, we thought this would be a time of greater need. Plus during this time of giving thanks, it is a good opportunity for each of us to share with those less fortunate.
For Christmas, we will again be collecting children's pajam-as for Food on Foot. I will deliver these to the Organization on Wednesday, December 16, for distribution to the chil-dren on Saturday, December 19. This is the day the children will pick up their last food bag before Christmas. Each child gets to come inside without a parent and pick their own pair of pajamas with the help of volunteers who man the tables of new pajamas stacked for boys and girls by size. Just after Thanksgiving, I will put boxes is the Narthex for the pajamas which do not need be wrapped.
Carolyn, at Food on Foot, says one of their biggest requests is for sleep pants in Men's sizes Small, Medium and Large. There is also a need for both boys' and girls' pajamas in sizes 8 -10 and 14-16 as well as pajamas for girls who wear Ladies' sizes Small, Medium and Large.
Lend a Hand has another project in the beginning stages. If you are aware of a need, please contact Larry McGowan or me.
We continue to fill food bags for Food on Foot and help with the distribution of food bags on the fourth Saturday of each month. Please join us some Saturday morning at 1030 and participate in Outreach in action.
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to each of you for your continued support of our various projects.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginger Goolsby
Outreach Liaison to the Vestry

Repairs this month haven’t been extensive but have been expensive. Our dish washer wasn’t working properly and required some major repairs costing over $900. Then the repairman had to be called back for another problem to tell
us of a solution. No one seemed to know we were supposed to do a simple procedure on a regular basis. Now we know! Other minor problems involved replacing several sections of base board and treating an outside drain with some root killer. As usual, weeds and shrubs continue to grow and need to be kept un-der control. Applying a little round-up has helped with the weed control, and many thanks to Glenn Thompson. WORSHIP MINISTRY CORNER
Parish family, November 1 is All Saints’ Day which is the name day of our church. This day is also the day we remember our loved ones that have passed to be with our Lord. There is a tribute of floral arrangements that is placed at each of the columbarium in their honor and each name is read and a bell is rung. This brings me to Thanksgiving and how all of us should give thanks for what we have and who we are, because there is no promise of tomorrow. This is why we must trust in our Lord to put us on the right paths in our lives by having faith and with this you can not go wrong. Good things will come. David Burnette, Vestry Liaison for Worship

ENGAGING GOD'S MISSION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: FINAL REPORT OF THE TASK FORCE FOR
REIMAGINING THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH INTRODUCTION
The members of the Task Force for Reimagining The Episcopal Church (TREC) believe that the Holy Spirit is
calling our Church to participate in God’s mission in a faithful and life-giving way in a changing world.
All of our work is grounded in three basic practices that we believe we must renew in our Church, and thus
we start with an invitation to the Church for renewal and reimagination around these transformational prac-
tices that the Church at every level must embrace today.
Follow Jesus together. The Episcopal Church’s identity is rooted in Jesus and his Way. The renewal of our
Church will come only through discerning the shape of that Way and practicing it together in the power
of the Spirit. Christianity is an embodied way of life, not just an institution or set of ideas. The Episcopal
Church has a distinct and rich heritage of interpreting and expressing Jesus’ Way. Every local church and
every Episcopalian must be called to follow Jesus more deeply.
Into the neighborhood. Jesus sends us together into the places where ordinary life unfolds. We are sent
to testify to God’s reign as we form and restore community by sharing in God’s peacemaking and healing.
This begins with deep listening to neighbors, relying upon their hospitality rather than expecting them to
find us on our terms. In today’s increasingly diverse world, we must learn how to bear witness to, and
receive from, those of different cultures, faiths, and beliefs, “eating what is set before us.” For many
churches now disconnected from neighbors, this will mean attempting small experiments in sharing
God’s peace as we learn how to form Christian community and witness with those neighbors.
Travel lightly. Jesus sends us out empty-handed so that we might rely upon God’s abundance, which
sometimes comes to us through the hospitality of our neighbors. We must hold inherited structures
loosely as we make space for alternative patterns of organizing our life together. We must discern what
of our traditions is life-giving and what unduly weighs us down. Traveling lightly means going in vulnera-
bility, risking being changed by God and our neighbors.
We invite local congregations, dioceses, and the wider Church structures to enter into a season of sustained
focus on what it means for us in this moment, in our various local contexts, to follow Jesus, together, into
the neighborhood, and to travel lightly.
We must learn how to form Christian community and practice Christian witness in environments where the
culture no longer supports Christian identity, practice, and belonging as it once did. This work of learning and
discovery must take place at all levels of the Church, although it is primarily local work.
“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out
and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” – Matthew 9:17
