Our Parish History: St Elizabeth’s Fr Basil Bergin was motivated to establish a school following the building of the new church, which was opened on March 27th, 1955. Until then, Masses had been celebrated in a converted house in Effingham Street, one of two that had been purchased in 1947.
Fr Bergin would lead the congregation with three Hail Mary’s asking God to send nuns at the end of each Mass.
St Elizabeth’s School was established in 1958 and was operated by three Presentation Sisters, Emmanuel, Carmel, and Raphael.
The school was built underneath the church and, while able to accommodate 200 students, started with 77 children from years 1 to 3.
The original school uniform for girls was a heavy brown tunic, with a white shirt, white socks and a brown velour hat.
Dear Parishioners, We welcome back to our parish Bishop Joseph Oudemann, who will celebrate our extraordinary form confirmations at 9am this Sunday, feast of Christ the King, to be followed immediately by the sung Mass. Our congratulations go to the children and their families, and our thanks to all who have helped to prepare for this important and happy occasion.
As we enter into the last stretch of the liturgical year, our minds are cast upon the "Last Things", the ultimate realities relating to our eternal destinies. The frenetic conditions of "modern" living can distract us from the fact that this life will end, while it is the next life that will last forever. Hence the need to make of our earthly sojourn everything the Lord calls us to make of it, since we will not pass this way again.
November, traditionally known as the month of the Holy Souls, is a time for us to pray for those who have passed from this life, but are yet to enter into eternal glory. "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them, may they rest in peace. Amen." November 1, Solemnity of All Saints reminds us of the destiny to which we are all called, while November 2 All Souls' Day, and indeed the whole month, reminds us of the need to pray for the repose of the faithful departed.
Having Mass offered for the repose of the souls of deceased family, friends and acquaintances is an act of holy charity towards one's neighbour which we can all put into practice. As always, envelopes for requesting Masses and making an offering will be left at the back of our churches.

PRAYER CAMPAIGN FOR DROUGHT RELIEF: The Catholic Bishops of Australia have announced a
National Prayer Campaign for Drought to take place during November. People across the country
are encouraged to pray for the gift of rain, for people affected by the drought and to provide
practical support, where possible. The Bishops note that large parts of the country are directly
affected by the drought, but the impact is national – and so should the response be national.

The capital sins and their opposite virtues: Gluttony and Temperance - An excessive desire for food distorts a natural human need, leading to the sin of gluttony, wherein food becomes an end in itself. A lack of self-control in eating and drinking leads to voraciousness in everything else, since one seeks to satiate the hunger and thirst of the soul by overindulging the body. "We cannot possibly look away from the gratification of food...unless the mind is fixed on the delight of things celestial." (St John Cassian) We achieve the virtue of temperance through fasting. "[The] gentle and loving Lord looks for fasting and abstinence that we may be detached from things of this life and devote our spare time to spiritual matters." (St John Chrysostom) Fasting is linked to almsgiving: "[H]aving reckoned up the price of the dishes of that day, give it to some person in want, and you will exhibit humility of mind." (Hermas, The
Shepherd) Almsgiving is an imitation of God Himself.

MASS READINGS
First Reading: Ecclesiasticus 35: 12-14.16-19 The Lord is a judge who is no respecter of personages. He shows no respect of personages to the detriment of a poor man, he listens to the plea of the injured party. He does not ignore the orphan's supplication, nor the widow's as she pours out her story. The man who with his whole heart serves God will be accepted, his petitions will carry to the clouds. The humble man's prayer pierces the clouds, until it arrives he is inconsolable, nor will he desist until the Most High takes notice of him, acquits the virtuous and delivers judgment. And the Lord will not be slow, nor will he be dilatory on their behalf.

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else. 'Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, "I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get."

MOTHER’S HELPER SOUGHT
A family living in the Putney area of South West
London, in a small military community with other
families, is seeking a mother’s helper.
They are seeking a warm, loving and caring live-in
person to join their family and help care for
their children, a three-year-old boy, a two-year-
old girl and a newborn; and ‘keep house’.
The position is for one year and comes with room
and board. Monday to Friday approximately 5-6
hours of help per day. Weekly pocket money of
£120. Weekends would be free though help with
children during Sunday Mass for an hour or so
would be warmly welcomed.
