It is important that we understand the nature of the resurrection of the body in order to understand our Christian faith. The resurrection of the body is different from the resuscitation of a body. There are times when a person actually dies, such as on an operating table, and then is resuscitated, i.e. the physical body comes back to physical life. That resuscitated body can still get hurt, wounded, age and eventually die again. A resurrected body is a transformed body . Dear Parishioners,

We recite in the Apostle’s Creed: “I believe…in the resurrection of the body…” Just as Christ’s body is risen from the dead, so shall our bodies be raised from the dead. It is important that we understand the nature of the resurrection of the body in order to understand our Christian faith. The resurrection of the body is different from the resuscitation of a body. There are times when a

person actually dies, such as on an operating table, and then is resuscitated, i.e. the physical body comes back to physical life. That resuscitated body can still get hurt, wounded, age and eventually die again.

A resurrected body is a transformed body. It is a body that has died, but it is changed in such a way that it cannot be hurt or wounded, or age or die again. It is a different reality than the reality of this world. It is not

limited time or space. It is what we call a glorified body.

There are several religions that believe in the immortality of the soul (without the body). The ancient Greeks believed that the soul was imprisoned in the body and needed to be freed from bodily existence. The difference of our Catholic Faith is that our soul and body are one and we will continue to have our bodies, only they shall be transformed to be like a new body, a glorious

Page 2: Dear Parishioners,files.constantcontact.com/86a07b19101/a95a96a5-d817-498c...properly cares for the body. It is, after all, this mortal body which will become our immortal body. Christ

and eternal body like that of Christ’s Risen Body.

In such “resurrection faith” the form of our old body—with all its weaknesses and limitations, its mortality—will be exchanged (i.e., changed) for a new form, the transformed reality of a risen body in the Resurrection of the Dead.

To put it another way, in the Resurrection we will not come back to life in the type of physical body we have now in this world. We do not return to some ideal age and keep living a physical life forever. The New Testament constantly says we will be “a new creation.” We will be in a different state of existence.

The Gospel today makes the point that Jesus is not a ghost (a kind of disembodied apparition of a dead person). Jesus invites the disciples to touch him and see that he has flesh and bones and he even eats something. Doesn’t this contradict what I was saying about a resurrected body being a different kind of body than our earthly body? No, only that the resurrection deals with our body still. In a different form but not a disembodied reality (our souls only).

The implications of this teaching are several which I will explore with you in the 50 Days of Easter. Certainly one important implication of Resurrection faith is that our bodies are important and “spiritual life” honors and properly cares for the body. It is, after all, this mortal body which will become our immortal body.

Christ is Risen and so shall we in “the Resurrection of the Body”!

Concerning the Name Easter

Many Anti-Catholic sources and even uninformed Catholic sites will state that the word “Easter” comes from the name of a goddess of the Anglo‑Saxons named Eostre who was celebrated in the Springtime. Of course, for Anti-Catholic sources this “proves” Catholics are pagans with a veneer of Christianity!

But as our Catholic bishops note, according to the best scholarship: “The word “Easter” comes from Old English, meaning simply the ‘East.’ The sun which rises in the East, bringing light, warmth and hope, is a symbol for the Christian of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle is [also] a central symbol of this divine light, which is Christ. It is kept near the ambo [and lighted during Mass] throughout Easter Time... (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)

In Greek and Latin the name for Easter is Pascha, from passover. Easter is the Christian Passover. The Romance languages all use some form of the Latin, such as Spanish Easter is Pascua.

We often do not formally acknowledge the work of some of our ministries that work so hard behind the scenes, but we do appreciate their devotion to their ministry. Our Welcome Committee provide so much of our “Welcome” to our community through their service at special events, like the Soup ‘N’ Sandwich Supper, the Children’s Christmas Pageant and Cookie Exchange, as well as all of our “Welcome Receptions”. They also call every new parishioner to say hello and offer their assistance. We could not complete the job of welcome without them. Thank you Welcome Committee members. God Bless!
