Dear People of God, Over the past two weeks the United States has been galvanized by daily marches and gatherings initially sparked by the tragic death of a young man in Min-neapolis. These protests have escalated to call na-tional and even international attention to the sad presence of racism in our society. Racism is alive and unwell, a side of human nature which I believe is rooted in fear, nurtured by cultural biases and status, and which has absolutely no place whatsoever in the Christian and Catholic tradition. We are reminded throughout Sacred Scripture that everyone, regard-less of where they came from, who happened to be their parents, what they might or not believe, wheth-er they agree with us or not, regardless of skin color, income, or education has been created in God's im-age and likeness and that gives all of us an underly-ing equality which should never be set aside for any reason. Our mandate as disciples of Jesus is to live the Great Command which means loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. Perhaps the root cause of the lack of love and respect for others is because so many people don't love themselves. Poor self es-teem, social isolation and other causes lead people to dislike themselves which can so easily be turned into disliking others. As Disciples, though, the Great Command means standing up for that neighbor when others attempt to hold that neighbor down. It means challenging inequity when we see it, openly and courageously. Above all, it means we truly re-spect the dignity of every human person.

I'm delighted to say that I see this in action at Dea-con Tom's Food pantry. Our clients are treated as friends and neighbors; our staff knows them by name and can talk with them about family and per-sonal interests as friends and equals. We don't give handouts: we allow the clients to select and choose on their own, respecting their dignity as God's chil-dren. We do our best to see Jesus in every one of them as we hope they see Jesus in every one of us. Because of this recognition of the dignity of all, the neighborhood here was tranquil and ordinary throughout the broader period of disruption which gripped much of the city. We should give thanks to God for the opportunity to express love of neighbor and the fruits which accrue from doing so. Perhaps a review of history will point us in the right direction. After Peter, the next several popes were all Africans, suggesting that the success of our Church is in great part owed to those persons of col-or who glorified God, offered prayer and adoration, and led us forward on the pilgrim way to the King-dom where true equality reigns. Fr. Chris

The Celebration of Sacraments

Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered

parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather-

ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom

at the rectory.

Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday

or by appointment.

Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of

your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or

religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of

age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill,

the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

In the event that you are in need of a priest or deacon and there is no one in the office: Please try the emergency number at 419-

243-6031 or call Deacon Tom on his cell phone at 419-984-0082 and leave a message with your phone number and he will return your

call as soon as possible.

LITURGICAL MUSIC FOR TODAY’S MASS

We will be distributing music sheets each week!

Liturgical Ministry Update With the changes required by the Diocese of Toledo, the role of Liturgical Ministers will be different at our Masses for a while. Eucharistic Ministers will not be utilized as Communion will only be the Body of Christ and distributed by the priest and deacon. We will not have a choir, there will be no aco-lytes and no hospitality after Mass. There are still ways to answer God’s call to ministry, though. Please consider trying a new role at Mass. Once we have the names of the people willing to participate, a new schedule will be created and mailed. Look forward to seeing you! Msgr. Chris Liturgical Ministers during COVID-19 Lector – We still need proclaimers of the Word at both the 8 a.m. Mass and 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday mornings. We will happily train anyone interested in serving as lectors who have not read at Mass before. What to know: Lectors must be age 65 or younger to be on the altar, or willing to sign a waiver Lectors may read both readings and the stanzas of the psalm If there are two lectors for Mass, there will be six feet of separation between the seats for proper social distancing Lectors will receive Holy Communion on the altar Ushers – We need ushers to help dismiss parishioners at the end of Mass to receive Holy Communion before exiting the church. We will provide train-ing for anyone new to the role of usher at HSP. What to know: All ushers must wear masks How to sign up – Call Sherri in the Parish Office at 419.243.6452, or talk to Pat Thompson, Mary Kay McPartlin or Martha Farrell after Mass

Compassion And DialogueCompassion And DialogueCompassion And DialogueCompassion And Dialogue Compassion and dialogue are essentially vulnerable positions. If we are into control and predictability, we will seldom descent into the weakness of listening or the scariness of dialogue. We will not only be inca-pable of hearing others, but will also be incapable of hearing God. How we do anything is how we do eve-rything. If we spend all day controlling and blocking others, why would we change when we kneel to pray? Faith, frankly, demands faith, not proof, certi-tude, predictability, control, or the comforts of authori-ty assuring us that we are always right. Our tempta-tion is often to create a non-relational Christianity and non- relational leadership styles, so we can have all the bases covered by custom and statute, and don’t ever have to enter into the scandal of particularity. Prayer, perhaps more than anything, is the school of relationship and particularity. We should be the ex-perts in these areas—if we are people of prayer.
