Ring in a ResolutionWith a few New Year’s resolutions, you can make a fresh start at any
age. Here are some suggestedgoals for you to work toward
this year:Plan some play. Studies show thatsocial interaction promotes good
health and a longer life. Check outyour local senior center or your
community’s activities calendar tosee what kinds of programs areavailable. Game nights, classes
and special interest clubs are greatways to meet new people and
reconnect with old friends.Stretch your legs. As we grow older,
exercise can provide manybenefits. Plan a daily walk to get
your muscles moving. You’ll soonnotice a difference in your body, including looser joints and better
balance.Keep good records. Gather
important documents, such asmedical and financial
information, and store themtogether in a safe place. Let a
friend or family member knowwhere this file is located so it can
be easily accessed during anemergency.
Take precautions. Prevent falls bymaking sure cords are tight againstwalls and there are no loose edges
on carpets or rugs. Use anightlight or lamp to help you see
better when walking aroundat night.

Matters of the HeartAs we look back over the past
year, we see so many things to bethankful for. One of the biggestblessings is being a part of theBelmont Village family. Yourloved ones are our loved ones, part of our family. We know thetransition from one stage of lifeand stage of this disease toanother is a difficult one. Weknow this because we too see thechanges you see and deal withdaily. It is important that you armyourself with knowledge ofAlzheimer’s disease and otherdementias. Ignorance is not bliss.Understanding changes in yourloved one comes from knowingwhat to expect as the diseaseprogresses. This knowledge helpsease some of the stress, frustrationand guilt that goes hand in handwith Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is aprogressive, degenerative disease
that attacks the brain and resultsin impaired memory, thinking, and behavior. You may have amore appropriate definition if youhave been surviving this diseasefor very long. Alzheimer’s diseaseis an illness that steals the mind, destroys the personality, ravagesthe finances and breaks the heartsof all involved. When youunderstand the disease is thereason for the behavior andpersonality changes, that yourloved one has no control overthese changes, it will help you toadjust your expectations. If youdon’t adjust your expectations asthe disease progresses then youwill become more overwhelmed, frustrated and possibly resentfulas time goes by. Known behaviors, routines and tasks are no longerrealistic expectations as therebecomes less they can do forthemselves and more you have todo for them.
Improve YourImmune System
Exposure to germs is almostinevitable, but with a strong
immune system, you can avoidgetting sick or prevent a mild cold
from becoming a more seriousillness. Here are some ways to give
your immune system a boost:Eat nutritious foods. Colorful fruits
and vegetables containantioxidants, which help fightinfection. Also fill up on foods
rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids. These include broccoli, citrus fruit, nuts, whole grains, beans, chicken
and tuna.Drink plenty of water. Water can
flush out toxins that lead todisease and will also preventdehydration, which weakens
the body.Sleep soundly. Not getting enough
sleep makes your body moresusceptible to illness. A lack of
sleep can also increase the stresshormone cortisol and cause
inflammation.Stay active. Exercising regularly
improves immune systemfunction by increasing leukocytes, cells that fight infection. Moderate
exercise, such as walking, isperfect; pushing yourself too hard
can make your immune systemweaker.
Reduce stress. Some stress isunavoidable, but handling stress
in an unhealthy way—such asignoring problems instead of
solving them—can cause chronicstress. This leads to an increase of
stress hormones, which canreduce white blood cell function
and result in illness.
Schedule AnnualAppointments
January is a time for freshbeginnings. So take time toschedule your health and wellnessappointments for the year.Whether you are single and livealone or orchestrate a fullhousehold, you’ll save yourselftime and hassle by schedulingahead. Here are some basicappointments to keep in mind:
Dental. Adults and childrenalike should see the dentist at leasttwice a year for checkups andprofessional cleanings. Considerscheduling appointments for kidsduring summer and holidaybreaks so they won’t miss school.
Wellness. Everyone can benefitfrom a yearly wellness exam.Staying on top of “silent” issuessuch as blood pressure andcholesterol levels can preventlong-term problems. Childrenmay require immunizations, andstudent athletes may need adoctor’s authorization for them toparticipate in school sports.
Specialists. It’s advisable thatadults see a dermatologist at leastonce a year to have moles or anyother skin issues examined. Anddon’t forget the optometrist, whocan check for eye disease andrenew lens prescriptions.
