Dear Students and Families,

We hope you are safe and healthy while you are out of school and learning from home! In mathematics, you will be reviewing, applying, and extending content from the school year.

This week you will be focused on the topics of measurement and data. The table below outlines how you might organize completing your math work for the week.

Day Activity Time

1 Work Just in Time (p. 3-5) 30 minutes

2 Volume and Mass Measurement (p. 6-8) 30 minutes

3 Alphabet Squares (p. 9-10) 30 minutes

4 Area All Around (p. 11-12) 30 minutes

5 A Strategy for Area (p. 13-15) 30 minutes

If you need additional support with completing the activities, please use the following links:

Measurement and Data Videos: o Relating area to multiplication and addition o Solving problems involving measurement and estimation

Khan Academy is a free resource that will provide additional practice and instructional video lessons by standard. https://www.khanacademy.org/commoncore/grade-3-MD

Eureka Math Parent Tips: This document aligns to the curriculum that is being used in DCPS. Note the key takeaways from the lessons students previously learned on pages 13-16 and pages 35-42.

Key questions you might want to explore this week are:What strategies might you use to estimate the size of your bedroom? Why might it be important to have accurate measurements?

Week 2, Day 5Learning Target

I can analyze the relationship between the concepts of area, multiplication, and addition. I can solve word problems involving area of rectangular figures.

Daily Fluency (10 minutes)

Daily Task (15 minutes)

Part I: a. How many circles are there in all? Write down a number sentence that shows how you

thought about it.

b. Alonso said he figured out how many shaded circles there were first and then how many unshaded circles there were second. Once he knew how many of each, he added them together to find the total. Write a number sentence Alonso could have used that shows his reasoning.

c. Jennifer said, “I just saw 3 rows of 8 circles.” Write a number sentence that Jennifer could have used that shows her reasoning.

Part II:a. The area model below shows the floor plan for a storage closet. The storage closet will

have a tiled floor with grey tiles on the left and white tiles on the right. How many tiles are needed for the storage closet in all? Write down a number sentence in the box below that shows how you thought about it.

b. Think back to how Alonso figured out how many circles there were in Part I. Use Alonso’s same strategy here to find out how many tiles are needed. Write a number sentence with Alonso’s reasoning.

c. Think back to how Jennifer figured out how many circles there were in Part I. Use Jennifer’s same strategy here to find out how many tiles are needed. Write a number sentence with Jennifer's reasoning.
