Friday, 3 May 2019 Dear Students, Staff and Families, A very warm welcome back to school for Term 2. The recent rains are also most welcome, let’s hope we continue to receive much needed water to enable the environment to recover from a long dry summer. During the holidays staff members Adam Slater, Ashlee McCarthy, Matthew Stramare, Beth Hawkes, Nicholas Bartold and myself returned from an educational tour of Finland funded for us by the Commonwealth Bank. We were part of an 18 person group which I led looking at the success of the Finnish Education System. The group comprised the 6 of us from Holy Family and school leaders from across Australia together with two architects and a Professor from the University of South Australia. We learnt a great deal from our ten days in Helsinki visiting a range of educational institutions including schools and Universities. We asked the children if it was ever too cold for them to venture out to play and they replied: “Yes when it is minus 30 degrees Celsius!” This news made me think of our Rain Bell here at Holy Family. Everything in the world is relative. I wish to thank our Assistant Principal Michael Urdanoff and the whole staff for caring for our school so well during the last Week of Term 1. The Director of Catholic Education, Dr Neil McGoran believes that every child in Catholic Schools should love their school. We heard recently of a child at Holy Family who asked the family to drive past the school in the holidays to make sure the school was alright. Our beautiful Early Learning Centre here at Holy Family opened early this year. The Centre provides the children with the most amazing learning spaces and a quality learning program. I unreservedly recommend this service to you and encourage you to inform your extended family and friends that the Centre is now open here at Holy Family and everyone is most welcome. Please see more photos of Early Learning Centre on next page. KERRY WHITE PRINCIPAL

Dear Students, Staff and Families,

A very warm welcome back to school for Term 2.

Catherine of Siena

Catherine was, born at Siena, Italy on 25th March, 1347. She was the youngest but one of a very large family. From her earliest childhood Catherine began to see visions in her father's house. At age 16 she became a Dominican Nun.

She began to tend the sick, especially those afflicted with the most repulsive diseases, to serve the poor, and to labour for the conversion of sinners. Though always suffering terrible physical pain, living for long intervals on practically no food save the Blessed Sacrament, she was ever radiantly happy and full of practical wisdom.

In her latter years she went to Rome working strenuously for the reformation of the Church, serving the destitute and afflicted, and dispatching eloquent letters on behalf of Pope Urban.

The emblems by which she is known in Christian art are the lily and book. Her principal feast is on the 30th of April, but it is popularly celebrated in Siena on the Sunday following.

The "Letters", she wrote that were the most complete expression of Catherine's teaching are that we must ever abide in the cell of self-knowledge. Catherine died in Rome on April 29th 1380.

Casual Day Just a reminder that on Friday May 17th, is a casual day for Fred’s Van, one of our Mission Week charities. Children are asked to bring in a can of food on this day.

A CHILD’S PLACE IN OUR CHURCH

Every child is a revelation to humanity, a new creative source and a promise to creation. In their ability to awaken a sense of transformative future, every child is a gift. They are gifts to their families, but they are also gifts to the church.

So often, children are identified as persons with needs rather than rights and as adults we determine their needs. As adults we attempt to shape them to our desires, but despite our desires, children will always maintain their own unique personalities. Curiosity, learning strategies and wonder, all give a child the capability to construct their own knowledge, and to create relationships. Every child born is a deeply relational being with strengths and potential.

How many of us see children as role models? A child’s vulnerability, innocence and trust are all things adults put aside to pursue wisdom, strength, status and responsibility. But who is more in touch with God?

In Mark’s Gospel, (Mk 9:33-37), Jesus brings a child into the midst of the apostles, a small being who is helpless, vulnerable, and totally dependent on the more powerful members of his/her society. While the apostles jostle for status and rank, Jesus points to the little child and shows the child to be above the adults in greatness. They are the model participants in the kingdom of God.

God calls each of us by name, not by usefulness, and that makes every human being a companion of God. Jesus preaches a new reign for the vulnerable, signifying total inclusivity, embracing children as full and equal partners in the reign of God. We are shown a model of greatness and authority, where children participate in God’s inversion of power, privilege and status.

What children need more than doctrine, are the skills to identify and articulate their personal experience of God. Children’s Liturgy of the Word supports and fosters a loving relationship with God. It helps them to acquire a consciousness of a Christian language, to guide their faith journey and to learn to be comfortable around God’s presence.

A faith that invites children to flourish will transform a child’s life and ensure justice for them. It ensures they are heard and respected. A church that welcomes and protects its weakest members is a community that survives, and in welcoming them as a gift, God too is made welcome. Louise Stevens MTh. (Co-ordinator of Children’s Liturgy of the Word)
