Church Education…

Shofar Call to Worship - During the Advent Season we will begin our worship services with the sound of an ancient Hebrew instrument called a shofar. The shofar is made from the horn of a ram or an antelope and was used in Israel to announce the festival of the New Moon (Rosh Chodesh) and the beginning of the New Year (Rosh Hashanah). There are frequent references to the shofar in the Old Testament including Leviticus 25:9, 2 Samuel 6:15 and Psalm 98:6. Originally there were three shofar calls: the tekiah which is a call of proclamation; the shevarim which is a call of longing and separation; and the teruaeh which is an alarm call. In our Advent services we will be using the shofar as a call of proclamation and announcement.

Advent Wreath - The Advent wreath includes many symbols. The wreath is in the shape of a circle, with no beginning and no ending. This reminds us that there is no beginning and no ending to God, and that God’s love and caring for us never ends. The evergreen branches are a sign of ever new life. The candles tell us of the light which came into the world with Jesus Christ. The traditional colors of the Advent candles, three violet and one rose, are penitential colors, reminding us of our need for God’s help to be the people we’re meant to be. The white candle which we light on Christmas Eve signifies the coming of Christ.

Joys and Concerns …

Pray For … We want to remember our young adults in their work and their studies. This week we pray for Jen Quiring who is studying Family Studies at the University of Guelph.

Pray For … Please remain in prayer for the world. Pray that comfort and healing will embrace the families of victims. Pray for the perpetrators engaged in violence. Pray that leaders may find the wisdom and patience necessary to promote understanding, trust and peace. Pray that God’s family will strengthen hospitality, forgiveness, prayer, and self-giving service to our neighbours.

Notice of Death … Helen Janzen (88), passed away on Sunday, December 6. Helen was the sister to our members Henry & Dorothy Riediger, Alice Baerg, and Dora Jamieson. A funeral service to celebrate Helen’s life was held at LUMC on Wednesday, December 9. Please keep this family in your prayers.

Pray For … Pray for the Refugee Sponsorship Committee as they continue their work. They are waiting for a family profile from MCC.

Pray For … Mary Raber teaches at Odessa Theological Seminary in Ukraine. Her father recently passed away. Pray for comfort and a sense of God’s peace as she continues her teaching ministry, which currently includes a course about women in the evangelical movement in Russia.

Remembering Our Neighbours… It is good to remember that we are all part of the large Christian fellowship.

This week, please pray for the United Pentecostal Church.

In an effort to foster community among the members of LUMC, the bulletin features a section for members to share their joys and concerns. We will remember to pray for these people in the coming week. Note: Names submitted must have the individual’s consent.
