Our Winter Solstice on the 22nd of this month means that this is a darktime of year. The world around us seems dark, as well; weve gotclimate change, cyber attacks, random violence, global terrorism and more.We are living in a world that feels like the first verse of The first Nowell theangel did say... on a cold winters night that was so deep. Deep, deep

darkness.Remember comedian George Carlins line: When youre experiencing

darkness in your life, pray for God to free you from it. If you are still indarkness ... make sure youve paid the electric bill!

Certainly, you will understand that were not the first people to face darkdays. Hebrew Scriptures present numerous examples. In the prophet Isaiahstime, about seven hundred years beforethe birth of Christ, people walked indarkness ...{and}... lived in a land ofdeep darkness (9:2); God seemed

    Yours, In Christ -

Rectors Desk from page 1I (CONTINUE TO BE) VERYINTERESTED IN A THIRD PARISHJOURNEY TO THE HOLY LAND.ARE YOU? WE HAVE A DATE!

Recently I was privileged to havetime together with The RevdCanon John Peterson and Canon IyadQumri and said that Id love to haveone more Saint Michael & All Angels

parish pilgrimage before I retire. We have since decided on the dates:

November 9-20, 2017.To have both John and Iyad as

leaders is an incredible opportunity.Ask our 2011 pilgrims: Don & SandraAlser, Norris Battin, Bill & Judy Brady,Teri Corbet, Frances Fukuda, Jim &Grace Walker Gray, Ray & MontyPentz, Frances and Don Haynes, Jim& Lynn Headley, Bryant & Elizabethand Evans Henry, Steve & Ann Morris,Keith Nelson, Ruth Poole.

We will spend ample time inJerusalem and the Church of theResurrection (housing both the emptytomb and Calvary), the Western Walland Temple Mount, the Garden ofGethsemane, walk both the PalmSunday Road down the Mount ofOlives and Stations of the Cross (withJohn Peterson, author of the form forthe Stations that we use on GoodFriday here) through the Old City ofJerusalem; Bethlehem and MangerSquare; travel to Galilee and its Sea/Lake, Nazareth and the home of Jesuschildhood, Capernaum, Magdala,Mount of the Beatitudes and site of themultiplication of loaves andfishes; theGreek Orthodox Monastery built overJacobs Well; Qumran and the DeadSea; maybe ice cream in Ramallah. Wewill worship with Anglicans living inthe land where Jesus walked. Therewill be ample opportunities to talk withthem as well as with Jews andMuslims and other Christians and learnmuch about contemporary life in Israel/Palestine. Are you excited?

    Costs should be approximately

$2,075 for land (non-single roomhousing, excellent middle eastern meals, air conditioned transportation) and$1,800 for coach air travel.

Please think prayerfully about thispossibility, understand that we will bevery safe at all times, talk withparishioners who have made this

journey previous ly, and let LynnHeadley and/or me know that you areinterested.

    Peter+

absent and people saw only distressand darkness, the gloom of anguish;and they were thrust into thickdarkness (8:21-22).

We know what this feels like.Anxiety and insecurity aboutrelationships, jobs, health, retirementand fear about the future lead us tofeel as though we are being thrust intothick darkness.

We need illumination. The people of ancient Israel looked

for a ray of light. For a child hasbeen born for us, given to us, saysthe prophet (9:6), authority shall restupon his shoulders; and he will benamed Wonderful Counselor, MightyGod, Everlasting Prince of Peace(9:7). This was their FutureHope.

We have so many reasons for hopetoday. From a TED talk by author-comedian-entrepreneur BaratundeThurston, I learned about threeteenagers: American Taylor Wilsonwho said to himself, Im going todesign a new, safer, more efficientnuclear reactor, and did; KenyanRichard Turere who feared that lionswould devour his familys livestock,so he built an automated securitysystem; Californian Jack Andraka whobecame angry about pancreatic cancerafter it killed a family friend, so,bucking conventional wisdom, hedeveloped a protein-based blood testthat is much faster, more effective andless expensive than other options.Instead of cursing the darkness thesethree adolescents lit candles. SaysThurston, ...all while dealing withhomework, parents and puberty.

Children are succeeding in makingthis world a safer, more secure andhealthier place.

Gods kingdom of justice andrighteousness is being advanced oneinnovation at a time.

Its enough to give us FutureHope.

Isaiah predicted Christs coming andthe Virgin Mary brought him into theworld To show Gods love aright, shebore for us a Savior when half spentwas the night (as the carol Lo, howa Rose... tells us; but his people hadto wait more than seven hundredyears; that would be like us waitingpatiently until the 28th century!

endless peace the prophet promisedin a challenging and contentious world:

Peace I leave with you; my ownpeace I give to you. I do not give toyou as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled, anddo not be afraid. (John 14:27) Jesusdoes not offer us an escape from lifeschallenges, but instead gives us peacein the midst of these challenges.

Jesus is focused on people being inright-relationship (righteousness) withGod and with each other.Righteousness (right-relationship)means: loving, giving, just andcommitted. This is the kind ofrelationship Jesus has with each of us,and it is the kind that he wants us tohave with God and with one another. Our hope for the future is found in ChristJesus, and in all who follow him in right-relationship and peace-with-justice.

Christmas is the season ofFutureHope, in which the light of Christenters the darkness of the world.

The birth of Jesus reminds us thatchildren can change things for the better, whether they are designing safer nuclearreactors, developing better blood tests,or being the One and Only Savior of theworld. To those living in deep darknessthe Light of Christ is shining, to save usfrom our mistakes and to lead us in thepaths of peace-with-justice and right-

relationship.Receive the Light. Accept the Light.Embrace the Light. And then, share theLight in whatever ways you can. Youdont have to build a security systemfor livestock or broker peace betweenrival gangs or warring nations, thoughwe are all called to do what we are able. You can visit a lonely relative and/orfriend, drive respectfully, shopintelligently, invite a neighbor to church, tutor a troubled teenager, plant a gardenin community.

Accepting and sharing the Light of

Christ is the best present and hope forour future.Jesus is our FutureHope and Jesus is

here now among us. Merry Christmas!

The Psalmist (84:10b) witnessesthat justice and peace have kissed eachother, and Jesus offers us that

    REPOSE

Five Good Reasonsto Come to Church

Living near and driving up and

down the Southern Californiafreeways, we live in the shadow ofthe Hollywood sign. There are iconicmovies with this symbol that standout for us during the Christmasseason. For those of us who arefamiliar with Jimmy Stewartsmemorable film, Its a Wonderful

Life, we think about the closingscene where the community comestogether to help the hero, GeorgeBailey who is in need. His wife,Marys (Donna Reed) beaming facerejoices as she sees each neighborenter through her living room door. And what a wonderful Christmas itis.

One reason to come to churchis for community. Community is,as Jeff Rekoon, a Sundays-at-Nineguest speaker, says a chance to bea part of something greater thanourselves. We can stay home andpray or we can come to church and

join with others to get in touch withthe Holy Spirit. Being a part of acommunity of people is like having asafety net and a cheering section.

Scripture speaks to this in ICorinthians 12:26. And if onemember suffers, all the memberssuffer with it; if one member ishonored, all the members rejoicewith it.

A second reason to come tochurch is that you can make adifference.

Another theme in the film, Its aWonderful Life,is what might happenif you didnt participate in yourcommunity? George Bailey is givena tour of Bedford Falls by Clarence, the angel seeking to earn his wings.Bedford Falls, as Clarence showshim, might have become a wastelandin the event that George had gottenhis wish to have never been born.Clarence the angel spotlights thevalue of Georges life by looking atthe converse.

How to Keep Advent is a pamphletthat reminds us that the season ofAdvent is a time of preparation andanticipation of the birth of Christ.Helpful suggestions tell us ways thatindividuals and families may observeAdvent. One way is that we can makeour own Advent Wreath. SaintMichaels follows this tradition byhaving different families light a candleeach Sunday during Advent. You mightset up a creche before Christmas, and

perhaps put various figures in differentplaces in your home and add themgradually. (Remember that baby Jesusdoes not appear until Christmas, andthat the three kings do not arrive untilEpiphany.) Take time to give to thosein need, and feed the hungry are twomore things you might do; and otherideas are included in this helpful littlebooklet.

OUR BOOKKEEPER UPDATES:Pledges collected for the first twoweeks of November were aboveexpectations, which is great sincewe were behind quite a bit as of10-31-15. Total year to datecollected pledges are now $365,718versus $379,287 budgeted. Whilelower than planned, we hope tomeet our goal of $440,463 in pledgesby year end. YTD non-pledgeincome is also lagging at $9,283versus $12,916 budgeted.Containment of expenses has helpedreduce the "planned" cash negativefrom an expected loss of $39,922to an actual YTD loss of $24,432, butthese figures can at times beskewed due to expense timing.Hopefully everyone has been extra"thankful" during the month ofNovember, which will help SaintMichaels see "black" rather than"red" before the holidays are uponus! Crazy Christians

A book by Bishop Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church

We need some Christians who are as crazy as the Lord. Crazy enough to love likeJesus, to give like Jesus, to forgive like Jesus, to do justice, love mercy, walk humbly withGod, like Jesus. Crazy enough to dare to change the world from the nightmare it often isinto something close to the dream that God dreams for it. And for those who would

follow him, those who would be his disciples, those who would live as and be the peopleof the Way? It might come as a shock, but they are called to craziness. -- Bishop Michael Curry

The Reverend Lisa Rotchford will lead this study. If you would like your own book, please contact Susan Caldwell, Director of Christian Education. 949.644.0463 Ext.12

Now the spotlight is on you. Whathappens if you decide not to come tochurch?

Your pew space is empty. Othersnotice that you are gone. The ministrythat the Lord has for you goeslacking. The people that you normallytalk to and encourage may leavewithout having spoken to anyone thatday.

A third reason to come to churchis to exercise the gifts God hasgiven us.

Those who have the gift ofhospitality and service share their giftseach time they push the coffee cartout and put out the refreshments. When this loving act does not takeplace, everyone notices. There is no

coffee. There is no food. Parishionersare grumpy. Fellowship goes waning.Scripture reminds us to use our gifts.

If service, in his serving; or he whoteaches, in his teaching; or he whoexhorts, in his exhortation; he whogives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:7-9

A fourth reason to come tochurch is for corporate worship. There are three kinds of worship, according to Dr. Steven D. Brooks, adjunct professor at Azusa and Biola

University and author of the book,Worship Quest with this symbol. There is personal worship, lifestyleworship and corporate worship. Inmy conversation with Dr. Brooks, Iasked him to explain his perspective.Personal worship is how we spendour own unique time with God.Private prayer and meditation wouldfall into the personal worshipcategory. Lifestyle worship, according to Brooks, is how we liveout our Christian faith in our dailylives. For example, if we are driving

on the freeway and someone cuts usoff, how do we respond? Do werespond with anger or do we lift thedays events up to the Lord? Weworship God in our actions.Corporate worship is that special andunique time to come together and giveour praises to the Lord. ForEpiscopalians, corporate worshiptakes place in singing together, reading together, and sharing in theEucharist.

A fifth reason to come to churchis to be reminded. It is good to bereminded of what is really important.Easter Sunday last year, I was busilychecking off my to do list prior toattending the 8:00 oclock worshipservice. Canon Haynes said to me, Didyou hear the rumbling in the tombs?I stopped. I remembered it was Easter.I remembered what it was all about

and the reason for the Christian faith,my faith and why I do what I do: Ibelieve in a risen Savior. It takes a bitof an imagination and creativity toremember. And others at church helpus to think about what we believe, why we believe and how we take thismessage to the world.

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ ourPassover is sacrificed for us.

People: Therefore let us keep thefeast. Alleluia

Celebrant: We break this bread toshare in the Body of Christ.

People: We who are many are one, sharing in that one Body.

I have given you five goodreasons to come to church.

Can you think of a sixth?

P.S. And hintIts a Wonderful Life.

PLEASE REMEMBER . . . SaintMichael & All Angels has a ParishEmergency Fund, funded byparishioners and available to

parishioners facing financialemergencies and needing economicassistance. Requests should be directedto our rector or any member of ourVestry. If you are able to contribute tothis fund, all gifts are welcome!

Music was an early feature of theChristmas season. The earliest examplesare chants and litanies intended forliturgical use to observe both the Feastof the Nativity and Theophany, many ofwhich are still used by the Eastern

Orthodox Church. The 13th century sawthe rise of the carol written in thevernacular, under the influence ofFrancis of Assisi.

In the Middle Ages, the Englishcombined circle dances with singing andcalled them carols. Later, the word carolcame to mean a song in which a religioustopic is treated in a style that is familiaror festive. From Italy, it passed to Franceand Germany, and later to England.Christmas carols in English first appearin a 1426 work of John Audelay, aShropshire priest and poet, who lists 25

"caroles of Cristemas", probably sung bygroups of wassailers, who went fromhouse to house. Music in itself soonbecame one of the greatest tributes toChristmas, and Christmas music includessome of the noblest compositions of thegreat musicians.During theCommonwealth under Cromwell, the

Rump Parliament prohibited thepractice of singing Christmas carolsas Pagan and sinful. Like othercustoms associated with popularCatholic Christianity, it earned thedisapproval of Protestant Puritans.Famously, Cromwell's interregnumprohibited all celebrations of theChristmas holiday.

The Westminster Assembly ofDivines established Sunday as the onlyholy day in the calendar in 1644. Thenew liturgy produced for the Englishchurch recognised this in 1645, andso legally abolished Christmas. Itscelebration was declared an offenceby Parliament in 1647. There is somedebate as to the effectiveness of thisban, and whether it was enforced.

Puritans generally disapproved of thecelebration of Christmasa trendwhich continually resurfaced in

Europe and the US through theeighteenth, nineteenth and twentiethcenturies. When in May 1660 CharlesII restored the Stuarts to the throne, the people of England once againpracticed the public singing ofChristmas carols as part of the revivalof Christmas customs, sanctioned by

the king's own celebrations. WilliamSandys's Christmas Carols Ancient andModern (1833), contained the firstappearance in print of many now-classicEnglish carols, and contributed to the mid-Victorian revival of the holiday. Singingcarols in church was instituted onChristmas Eve, 1880, (Nine Lessons andCarols), in Truro Cathedral, Cornwall,England, which is now seen in churchesall over the world. According to one of theonly observational research studies ofChristmas caroling, Christmas observanceand caroling traditions vary considerablyamong nations in the 21st century, whilethe actual sources and meanings of evenhigh-profile songs are commonlymisattributed, and the motivations for carolsinging can in some settings be as muchassociated with family tradition andnational cultural heritage as with religiousbeliefs.

The tradition of singing Christmas carolsin return for alms or charity began inEngland in the seventeenth century afterthe Restoration. Town musicians or 'waits'were licensed to collect money in the streetsin the weeks preceding Christmas, thecustom spread throughout the populationby the eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesup to the present day.---- from Wikipedia
