A New Year
Happy New Year! No, I haven’t lost my calendar or forgotten what day it is. Today is the First Sunday of Advent and we begin a new church year. We begin with a time of preparation and waiting as we contemplate the birth of Jesus and what His coming into our world truly means. The liturgical color is violet and we use Cycle A in the Lectionary for the Sunday readings and Year II for the weekday readings. We spend the next few weeks thinking about our lives. How different are they because of Jesus’ entry into our world? As we begin the Advent season, people are thinking about many things. Some have thoughts of Christmas shopping to be done, food to be prepared, cards to be mailed. Some have thoughts of yet another season of snow to shovel, crowded highways and shopping malls. Some have thoughts that cause worry. How secure is my job? How will I pay my bills? Will my health improve? In the midst of our anxieties we wonder in today’s world how our Lord will save us. We listen with new ears to the prayer we have heard so many times before: “Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ” (the prayer that immediately follows the Lord’s Prayer at Mass.) We also remember that during Advent we cry out with one voice, “O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!” (Isaiah 2:5)

Second Collection Next Weekend: Retired Religious
Our parish will hold the annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection next weekend. For 30,000 senior
Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who benefit from the Retirement Fund for Religious—service is a way of life. Most ministered in Catholic schools, hospitals, parishes, and social service agencies,
usually for little or no pay. Today, hundreds of religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and
eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital support for necessities, such as
medications and nursing care. Please be generous.
Advent Books Available This Weekend
In preparation for the season of Advent, we will continue distributing Advent Books after all Masses this
weekend. You will find them on tables near the entrance doors to the narthex.

Special thanks out to the St. James School and Religious Education families for your generous donations toward our joint effort in Operation Christmas Child. We were able to fill to the brim a total of 100 shoeboxes for children around the world. Then in addition, the generous families who were able to take some of the shoeboxes to bring to drop off sites was a HUGE help! Thank you!

Bringing Epiphany to the Children of St. John Paul II Parish
The St. James Council of Catholic Women will again coordinate a parish collection of toy filled bags for the children of St. John Paul II Parish in Kankakee. It continues to be one of the most economically challenged parishes in the Diocese of Joliet. The toys/gifts are shared with the children of the parish at their traditional Feast of the Epiphany Celebration. Over 200 children in St. John Paul II Parish are from families who do without. Boy and girls, infants to age 17, have come to look forward to this special Epiphany celebration, which begins with Mass and includes the procession of the Three Kings. For some of the children these are the only gifts they will receive. The gift lists are simple and your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Members of the CCW will be distributing empty bags the weekends of December 7/8. Please return the bag filled with new, unwrapped toys to the church coat room. We will be collecting the bags through Christmas Day, December 25.
The many children of St. John Paul II are depending on St. James Parish to bring the gifts of the Three Kings to life. Please pray for this ministry and the families of St. John Paul II Parish. Please let us know if you’d like to help us with transporting bags to storage after the 11 A.M. mass on 12/15, 22 and 25 (it only takes about 15 minutes) or driving bags to Kankakee the week after Christmas. If you have any questions or would like additional information about this project, contact Doris Barrera at 630-260-9276 or [email protected]
