When the president of the Revelstoke snowmobile club, which has over 700 members, stood in front of the Paradise Valley Snowmobile Associa-tion (PVSA) in Dawson Creek and told them “we need what you have,” president Richard Cronier couldn’t have been more proud of his 79 members.

The 11-year president of the club had another moment to be proud of earlier in Novem-

ber, when the British Colum-bia Snowmobile Federation (BCSF) recognized the PVSA as the most outstanding club in the province.

Cronier said it was the club’s renewed commitment to com-munity that set them apart from other club’s across the province.

“I think this time it was the community stuff that got done last year through the club,” he said. “And the volunteers stepped up. We raised $9,000 towards cancer research … It was decided at a club meet-ing we would support a couple young riders who were riding across Western Canada.”

The club started as simply an idea 45 years ago, and was fostered by the hard work and dedication of now lifetime member Emma Holmes and her husband Bruce. That idea has now grown into the best club in the province that has over 300 kilometres of trail.

“I never want to take away from the founders of the club, Bruce and Emma Holmes. 45 years ago they hand cut some of those trails, some of our best trails are up on the salt ridge,” Cronier said.

“Emma is still a lifetime member, we still mail her a newsletter, even though Bruce has passed away, we still want her to know that all the effort

she put in 45 years ago is what made this club today.”

Cronier believes that over the last several years the club has seen significant growth due to the community spirit they have been encouraging.

“I think there’s a resur-gence in clubs and in particu-lar clubs that look at the com-munity to do stuff. You get those key players in your club and you do a small event and everybody gets excited by the small event and the next thing you know your events grow,” he said.

From sponsoring charities, to hosting community events to help people get involved in riding, the club has been a huge part of the snowmobiling community in the Peace Re-gion for the last 45 years.

That support will continue again this year on Feb. 7, when they will host a snow drag race called “Thunder on the Moun-tain.” But that’s not the only place you can find the PVSA this year.

“This year we have our drag races, we have our family ride planned, and then this year we are also adding a vintage carni-val where guys who are collec-tors and have these old sleds can come out and have a place to show them off,” he said.

“Just to try and engage an-other section of the snowmo-

PVSA goes even further, as long time member Vern Shaw was recognized by the BCSF as the outstanding snowmo-biler of the year due to his commitment and service to the club.

“He was nominated by someone in our club based on the number of volun-teer hours that he puts in. His commit-ment to meetings, his friendly attitude

toward everybody,” Cronier said. Cronier also added that the club is

Tests for ammonia contamina-tion at two city ice facilities turned up good news for curlers, and not so good news for pretty much everyone else.

The city of Dawson Creek an-nounced Monday that Memorial Are-na will be closed for the rest of the ice season after two samples of ice tested positive for ammonia.

Ammonia in the ice at the curling club, on the other hand, was success-fully neutralized.

“That was the best possible out-come,” said club manager Mike Bro-deur, of the test results. The curling club was closed Nov. 5, just three weeks into the season, leaving curlers with no alternative.

“They can’t wait to get back,” he said of the league players. “We’re ready to go as soon as we get provincial approval.”

Deputy director of community ser-vices Duncan Redfearn said a plan to shift Memorial Arena ice users to the Encana Centre is in motion, adding that the arena could be iced and ready by Jan. 9.

Ammonia is used as a cooling agent in the Memorial Arena chiller, but a leak lead to potential contamination in November.

The chemical is toxic in its gaseous form, and while it was trapped in the ice, city staff said they couldn’t take the risk and closed the facility.

Crews then tried to neutralize am-

monia in the brine mixture. For the larger Memorial Arena, it didn’t work.

Two tests at the arena showed am-monia contamination “of increasing severity” in the ice, leading crews to conclude there is “defi nitely a leak in the Memorial Arena Chiller,” according to a city release.

Crews will be brought in to drain the rink and haul contaminated ice to a disposal site.

Since the initial closure, skating and hockey activities have been moved next door to Kin Arena.

The city plans to transition Memo-rial Arena ice users to the Encana Cen-tre, which has equipment to make ice but hasn’t been used as a rink for sev-eral years.

Last month, city council voted to spend around $110,000 to ice the En-cana Centre, and instructed city staff to begin investigating options for re-placing Memorial Arena’s aging chiller system.

Redfearn said his department’s in-vestigation into the arena’s ice infra-structure would be extensive.

“We’re going to look at the entire system,” he said, adding that the build-ing had around two kilometers of pip-ing. “We’re going to have to go through and look at all that piping.”

The arena was originally built in the 1950s, but has been rebuilt and reno-vated on a number of occasions.

Council will decide what to repair and what to replace in the arena in the new year.

Wait list worriesPatients in Dawson Creek want more operating

time for surgeon with hundreds on wait list

Patients waiting months for routine sur-geries say local surgeons need more operat-ing time than they're getting.

Glenn and Cindy Olsen, who are patients of Doctor Andre Goetze, are asking the prov-ince and the Northern Health authority to do something to ease surgery wait times at the Dawson Creek and District Hospital.

In November, Goetze had a wait list of around 220 people for non-emergency pro-cedures, according to a letter the Olsens sent to Northern Health and elected offi cials.

Hospital offi cials and Goetze himself could not confi rm this num-ber. However, an offi cial referred the Alaska Highway News to a Northern Health data-base, which showed that as of Oct. 31, Goe-tze had 96 abdominal hernia repair cases on his wait list. For liver, pancreas, gall bladder and spleen surgeries, his wait list sat at 63.

The same procedures in Fort St. John had wait lists of 11 and fi ve cases, respectively, according to the database.

Glenn Olsen is waiting for a hernia re-pair—a routine procedure to move an or-gan that has been dislodged, while Cindy Olsen has also had procedures performed by Goetze. The ail-ment causes him some discomfort, which has grown worse with time.

In November, Olsen learned it would be another six months to get him in an operat-ing room. He had already lived with the her-nia for six months at that point.

The Olsens believe a shortage of operating room staff is contributing to the sprawling wait list.

“He was very professional about it, that was certainly my impression,” Cindy Olsen said of her conversations with Goetze about wait times. “He said ‘I would be glad to be getting at all these surgeries. I’m a surgeon.’”

Goetze told the Alaska Highway News he believed it was “not ethical” to comment on the issue, but did confi rm he gets part of one day a week to perform operations.

Jaret Clay, a senior Northern Health ad-ministrator in Dawson Creek, said the hos-pital is working to fi ll two operating room nurse positions, but that understaffi ng has not been a consistent problem.

He said the hospital has to balance operat-ing room time between three local surgeons, as well as several specialists.

“We need to ensure we’re meeting [the surgeons’] needs, they’re very highly skilled individuals and we want them in our com-munity,” Clay said. “It’s competing for the resource, and at the end of the day we make it as fair as we can.”

He added that patients needing emergen-cy surgery are given priority.

“We have challenges for sure in the North-east, but I’m not sure how rare those chal-lenges are,” he said of medical professional recruitment.

South Peace MLA Mike Bernier said that while the situation is acute in the Peace, is-sues like wait times and doctor shortages are increasingly common across the province.

Spending on health care already eats up a large part of the provincial budget, and ac-counts for 42 cents of every tax dollar spent.

Bernier said the ministry of health is look-ing at incentives to get doctors to move to rural B.C., including forgiving student loans.

“This is an issue that’s being faced right across B.C., it’s not unique to the northeast,” he said. “My job is to advocate to get what we need up here in northeast B.C., but if it was just northeast B.C., it would be much easier to address.”

Cindy Olsen worries that limited access to the operating room could lead surgeons to pack up and go elsewhere.

“This must be a very frustrating situation for [Goetze] as well, never mind the fi nancial consequences he must bear from such limit-ed surgical time,” the Olsens wrote in a letter forwarded to the MLA and health authority.

“Given his superior expertise and experi-ence, we are sure he will have no problem fi nding a job elsewhere, and then where will we be?”

It was a dream start for Basketball in the Peace.

Three of the four finalists Saturday were from Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, creating an intriguing story line for the rest of the season.

The NPSS basketball teams found the way to the finals of their home tourna-

ment on the weekend and considering both teams were missing players due to the provincial volleyball champion-ships, it was a welcomed result.

“We have a good group of grade 12’s this year—a lot of experience. We have been to provincials the last two years,” NPSS boys head coach Mike Redford said.

“This year I didn’t really know what to expect but we had a lot of guys that

have seen that high level so they are ready to play. We have been playing in the off-season and getting ready— a lot of effort on defense. The guys came ready to play today it was nice.”

NPSS Girls’ coach Ryan Leclair add-ed of his team’s performance: “I was quite happy,” he said. “They played re-ally well. The first couple games of the season you don’t know how it’s going to go. We didn’t have a lot of practice time

so yeah, they were very energetic they were running hard. Defense was good all weekend.”

Redford’s squad threw down a con-vincing performance sweeping all their games and out scoring their opponents by an average of 38 points in three games including an 83-58 win in the final against Dawson Creek Secondary School.

Continued from Page 5“I have to give credit to

Dawson, this is one of the best years I’ve seen them play. They are absolute competitors— they press, they trap— we talked about taking care of the ball. Making sure we cap-italize when they make mistakes on defense and turning it into offense and we did that it was nice to see,” Redford said.

DCSS head coach Richard Payne, whose team came up short against NPSS in the fi -nal but had a convincing showing the rest of the weekend said despite the fi nal loss he likes what he

sees from his team early on and expects big things for the upcoming season.

“You can’t teach height,” he said. “They have two guys that stand that tall, you can’t teach height. We have speed, have talent; getting the balls back down to our boys was a little hard that way… First great week-end, It’s nothing but up from here. We have noth-ing but high hopes this season.”

Payne believes this year might be one of the more talents squads they have had at DCSS.

“The well roundedness of my team this year,” he

said about the positives he saw early in the tour-nament. “We have speed, agility, age, confi dence. I’ve got inside, outside, I’ve got it all this year.”

In the Girls fi nal, NPSS made a game of it but weren’t able to come out win over the Nechako Valley Secondary School Voyagers, falling 68-27. That was despite the NPSS girls keeping the game close in the fi rst half. Leclair said it was a simple adjustment that made the difference for the other side.

“They took their trap off,” he said.

“We were getting some easy buckets off their trap and as soon as they did that, they forced us to play offense and we hadn’t practiced much offense so we couldn’t get much going… I knew Nechako [Valley] would be tough— I’m happy we played really well in the fi rst half just fell off in the second. But overall really happy.”

With 83 long track speed skaters from across the country taking over the Pomeroy Sport Centre, there was sure to be some fi erce competition over the three-day Canada Cup and Canada Winter Games tri-als event held for the fi rst time indoors in Fort St. John.

That experience in it-self— allowing local prod-ucts to experience the feel of a national level event, without the rigors of a long drive south played into the minds of a few local skat-ers.

“I’m so lucky that I get home ice advantage,” 17-year-old Dawson Creek native Pauline Sutherland (who attends school in Fort St. John) said on Sat-urday.

“I’m so used to driving for 10 hours to get to Cal-gary and the whole time you are driving you are stressed out about it. But

it’s nice I get to sleep in my own bed and cook my own meals. I get some down time.”

Sutherland also said she uses the competitive spirit of an event like the Canada Cup to push herself to be better.

“I still fi nd it really in-teresting… I fi nd it moti-vating to be in an atmo-sphere where everyone is so concentrated on doing well. You are in that atmo-sphere you are going to be performing well as well. It means faster times— I love it,” she explained.

Sutherland was one of several skaters from the area looking to qualify for the long track speed skat-ing team B.C. that will compete at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George this February.

The top four male and female skaters from ages 14-19 had the opportunity to qualify and at the end of Sunday Sutherland is on the outside looking in.

She fi nished fi fth, just 12 one hundredths of a

point behind the fourth place skater. Points are awarded based on the skaters time for each of the qualifying distances (500 metre, 1000m, 1500m, and 3000m).

It was the 3000m race on Sunday that was the undoing for Sutherland, posting a 5:13,23 which was 10 seconds or more behind some of her near-est competitors.

All hope is not lost for Sutherland to represent B.C. though.

Skaters who fi nished ahead of Sutherland have until the end of the week to decide if they will compete in short track or long track at the games.

The long track team will not be decided until the end of January because some of the B.C. skaters will have an opportunity to qualify for the World Junior Championship.

The news was a bit bet-ter for another Dawson Creek product, Jacob Gra-ham who qualifi ed in sec-ond place on the men’s

side, just two points be-hind the overall leader.

The 18-year-old, who had high hopes for the weekend in Fort St. John said after Saturday he ex-pected to be on team B.C. for the Canada Winter Games.

“I was expecting to do pretty well. I just came off of a junior World Cup the weekend before. I did quite well there, almost came third in the 500m, I was four one hundredths of a second back. So Yeah, I was expecting to do pretty well,” he said.

“This is also the Canada Winter Games trials for me as well. I was coming in hoping to win— high ex-pectations.”

Although he didn’t win, Graham did outshine the competition in the short-er disciplines, posting the best time amongst team B.C. athletes in the 500m at 0:37,04.

Graham’s 1500m time made him the only Canada Winter Games B.C. skater Continued on Page 9

Continued from Page 7under two minutes, with a

time of 1:58,91. In the Canada Cup stand-

ings, Graham fi nished a bit fur-ther down the ladder, fi nishing with the eighth and sixth best times respectively the 500m on Friday and Saturday. That left him a second behind national team member Alexandre St-Jean who set track records in the 500m.

That was one of the high-lights of the event according to Fort St. John Elks vice-president Wim Kok.

“A couple of the highlights were women skating sub 40 times. Somebody at 39 and a bit seconds in the 500m. Two of the men actually broke a 36 second 500m, so that was awesome,” kok said.

“For one it was a .6 of an im-provement over Friday so that was impressive. And that shows the quality of the track here.”

Kok added that those mark-ers showed both the talent that hit the oval in Fort St. John over the weekend but also the qual-ity of ice that we have in the En-ergetic City.

“There was some very high quality skating taking place. Some of these people have skated at high-level events and they demonstrated that they can do it here as well,” he said.

“We’ve done Canada cup’s outdoor, we’ve done Canadian Age class, Canadian Masters and this is our fi fth or sixth sea-son indoor and this is our fi rst real high calibre event that we have had. It’s proving [to be] a good facility and we can com-pete with other facilities in North America.”

Kok was also quick to con-gratulate the community for helping support the club in hosting an event like the Cana-da Cup.

“The community support, the city staff that helped with the ice, kudos to them. We can’t say enough about them,” he said.

Clinton Douglas Schilds, lifetime resident of Dawson Creek BC, passed away at his home on November 14, 2014 at the age of 50 years. Clinton was born on October 21, 1964, inDawson Creek, BC. He was the second child of Reta and Doug, brother to Heather. Clinton was fun loving and outgoing, he was quick to smile and a great prankster. Everything Clinton did throughout his life had a story to go with it! His best stories usually took place at the family farm, which was his favorite place to be. Clinton graduated high school at South Peace Secondary School. After graduation he started his career, as a heavy duty mechanic, in Tumbler Ridge at Quintette Coal Mines and later moved on to the Louisiana Pacifi c Plant in Dawson Creek. During his time working at LP he obtained his millwright ticket and specialized training in vibration technology. Clint worked many years at LP before moving to Northern Lights College where he took a position as an Instructor of the Millwright program until two years ago when his health issues prevented him from working.

Clinton married Pamella Lekei on February 29, 1992 and in July of that year welcomed a son, Carston Richard. In July, 1995 Spencer Douglas was born. Clinton’s proudest moments in life were the births of his sons. He loved them both very much. Clinton and Pamella divorced in 2005.

Clinton was warm-hearted, good natured, and intelligent. He worked hard at whatever job he was on and he played just as hard. Clint loved the company of family and friends. He will be remembered as a tinkerer, a car collector, a jack of all trades and a master of many. He was a mentor, a musician, a friend, a cousin, a nephew, an uncle, a brother, and a father. He will be greatly missed.

Clinton will be lovingly remembered by his sons: Carston and Spencer, sister Heather (Tim) Roberts, nephewCody Roberts (Kaylynn Peters), niece Kailey Roberts, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many friends andco-workers. He was predeceased by his mom Reta and his dad Douglas. A memorial service and tea was held at 10:00am,November 22, 2014 at Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, BC., offi ciated by Peggy Bergeron. Inurnment will be in theDawson Creek Cemetery at a later date.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Clinton may be made by donation to:

Harry Jeannotte, a long time resident of Dawson Creek passed away on Monday, November 24, 2014 in Dawson Creek at the age of 92 years.

Harry was born on April 15, 1922 on the family farm at Cut Knife, Saskatchewan. He was the 16th child of Victor Eli Jeannotte and Ida Morin. He grew up in Cut Knife and Barthal,

Saskatchewan and has been a resident of the Peace Country since 1942. At the age of 20, Harry and his brother Paul came west to the Peace River Country

because of the boom and worked construction building the Fort St. John Airport. In 1945, Harry and Paul bought a small farm north of Dawson Creek and began a

long-term farming enterprise known as Jeannotte Bros. Eventually the farm expanded to 12 quarters. During the winter in the early years Paul stayed back and took care of the farm while Harry would go trucking up the Alaska Highway.

In 1953, Harry and Paul bought the Peden farm. The next spring they moved the farmstead and family to the new location on the old Spirit River Highway.

Harry soon eyed Emily. It was clear to all that they should be together and they were married in Edmonton in 1959. Emily impressed him and he bragged about her being not only a hard worker but a great homemaker and a wonderful cook and baker. Harry and Emily had four children, their daughter Cindy was followed by their three sons Byron, Randall and Laine.

Harry was a great supporter of the local Canucks and he and Emily had season tickets for many years. They often traveled to Fort St. John or Hythe for playoff games. He was also a great fan of the NHL and the World Juniors.

Harry and Paul sold the farm in 1975. Harry and Emily remained on their farm site until 1991 and moved into town. Missing the land, he bought a quarter section in South Dawson and established a hobby farm.

Harry is survived by his loving wife Emily, children: Cindy (Louis), Byron,Randall (Karen) and Laine (Diana), four grandchildren: Nathan (Tina), Alicia, Kole and Braeden, and his fi rst great grandchild, Carrie. Harry also leaves to mourn his passing his sister Helene Pellerin who turns 101 this year, as well as his brothers Rene and George Jeannotte and sister Lucille Hoffman. He will be dearly missed by his many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

A prayer service was held on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 7:00 pm at theNotre Dame Catholic Church, Dawson Creek, B.C.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame Catholic Church, Father Louis Kwena offi ciated. Interment followed in the Briar Ridge Cemetery.

For friends so wishing donations may be made in memory of Harry to the Dawson Creek & District Hospital Foundation, 11100-13 Street, Dawson Creek, B.C. V1G 3W8 and to the Briar Ridge Cemetery, Box 53 Dawson Creek, B.C. V1G 4E9.
