Emmaus Lutheran is excited to begin a new ministry for our church. If
you know someone who speaks Spanish, consider inviting him or her to
church. Beto Torres and Julie Lujan, in cooperation with Pastor Kaye,
will be leading a Spanish Bible Study on Sunday mornings during the
Bible Study Hour from 10:10 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Pray for Beto and Julie as they help begin this new ministry, and pray for
those that we haven’t met yet that will be touched by the Word of God.
Extended Day Care Open During CHRISTMAS BREAK (December 21 and 26-28 and January 2-4)
Yes, there will be EDC for those who need it over Christmas vacation. Sign ups will be available through Ms. Rodriguez through Wednesday, December 19.
There are some exciting activities planned during each day.
EDC will be open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. unless stated otherwise. Thanks for signing up in advance!
The Board of School Ministries is looking for help with baking home made treats for the staff gift baskets. If you have some time and a heart to help with this, please contact Cecilia Dodd or the Church
Office. Items would have to be brought in by Monday, December 17. Thank you!
If you are new to our church...
● Please take a moment to fill out the Connection Card located in the
worship folder. We are glad you are here!
● Review the Escalator, our monthly publication, as it will have all of the
information needed for you to stay informed and connected to what is
happening at our church.
● Are you HEARING IMPAIRED? See an usher if you would like a listening
device to amplify the sound.
● We LOVE having CHILDREN in worship! If you need privacy, a cry room
with sound is available in the back of the Sanctuary.
● If you plan to COMMUNION with us (generally given on the first and third
Sundays of each month), please read the note below about what
Lutheran’s believe to be true about communion on the back of this sheet. If
you understand and agree, please join us. If your beliefs are not as ours, but
wish to come forward for a blessing, please feel very welcome to do that,
and indicate to the pastor by crossing your arms in front of your chest.
BEFORE YOU COMMUNE—-The LCMS
believes that Scripture teaches that the
Lord's Supper is a precious gift of God in
which Christ gives us His true body and
blood (in a miraculous way), together with
the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of
our sins and the strengthening of our faith.
Because the Bible teaches that this
Sacrament may also be spiritually harmful if
misused, and that participation in the Lord's
Supper is an act of confession of faith, the
LCMS ordinarily communes only those who
have been instructed in the teachings of
our church and who have confessed their
faith in these teachings, or to those that
have the same beliefs.
Senior Fellowship will happen every
2nd Wednesday of each month at 11:00 AM.
All are welcome to join for a hearty
discussion, prayer, fellowship and meal
together. We will meet
in the
multipurpose
room.
See you on Dec. 12

From the Pen of Mrs. Hittinger As always, I am looking for ways to share myself to all of you, helping you to understand the person that sits behind the scenes mak-ing sure that stuff happens. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about my grandma—my mom’s mom—Margie Mae (yes, that’s who my daughter is named after…). I called my grandma, “Mom”, which I believe is what my mother called her as well. She was a huge part of my first nine years of life. She passed away from lung cancer at the age of 56.
My Grandma treated me like her own—she wasn’t the “bake cookies and coddle me” type of grandmother. She got after me when I didn’t behave, but I knew she loved me. She spent hours playing “Go Fish” and Colorform with me. I watched her cook and take care of her multitude of cats that lived in the back yard. I regularly took out all of the cans of cat food in her kitchen pantry and lined them up along the ground. I loved playing with the perfume bottles on her dresser in her bedroom; the same ones my Grandpa left in their same spot for 20 years after she passed away.
Some of my fondest Christmas memories with my Grandma circulate around trips that we took to Green Valley Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. My mom and dad rented a cabin for us, and our family would gather to play in the snow, eat large meals, sit around the fireplace and enjoy Christmas together. My dad always took me out to play in the snow, and one year in particular, bought a new toboggan for my cousins and me to ride down the elaborate slope he had created down the side of the hill.
In this particular memory, my cousins and I had ventured down the hill several times already this day, and my Grandma and Grand-pa had been watching on the sidelines. I recall begging my grandma to go with me down the hill, but she didn’t feel very confident about doing so. I finally convinced her that it was going to be alright , and the two of us started down the hill. My dad had instruct-ed us to lean whatever way we wanted to make the toboggan go if we had to in order to follow the slope (which did have a couple of mild turns to go around the trees). About halfway down we saw the turn—I leaned one way and she leaned the other (I don’t know which of us leaned correctly), and we ended up hitting the tree, falling off of the toboggan and it ended up cracking right down the center. I remember us laughing, and her crawling over to me to ensure I was okay, giving me a great big hug while doing so. Of course, my dad came to rescue us, and we ended up throwing the toboggan out (or at least not using it anymore that day).
I share this for this purpose: This story isn’t monumental. We didn’t spend a lot of money to go someplace to make a memory. We simply lived life and enjoyed being together. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest memories. Don’t forget to spend time with your family enjoying the little things together—you never know where your child’s or grandchild’s favorite memory or mo-ment will come from. Merry Christmas, and may you make memories during this special season of the year.

Below is part 2 of a study on Martin Luther’s
A SIMPLE WAY TO PRAY. This is a practical introduction to
the theology and practice of prayer from the
command and promise of the Lord’s Prayer, based on
Luther’s Small and Large Catechism. In this study over the
next few months, we will delve into the Lord’s Prayer, the
Ten Commandments and the Apostles’ Creed and be given some practical advice and tools to help our prayer life
and prayer practice. This is found on the LCMS website, and written by the Rev. Dr. John W. Sias, Pastor, Mt.
Calvary Lutheran Church, Colstrip, Montana.
What is the point on which prayer stands or falls?
Why do we dare to pray this way? Because Christ invites us to pray to His Father as the one who has made us His
brothers and sisters, redeeming us to be adopted children of His Father, by the Spirit of adoption, 13 in Holy Baptism.
Thus, when we pray, “Our Father,” we are praying in the name of Jesus; 14 that is, as those baptized into Jesus Himself.15
What we pray in Christ, by faith, according to His promises, God the Father hears as coming from His own Son. What a
remarkable gift, to pray not on the off chance that we might be able to wheel and deal a favor out of God, but in the
certainty that He loves His Son, and loves us in Him.16 Now you may say, “Dear pastor, you take us in circles! All you have
done is show us that it is OK for us to pray as we always have!” Fair enough. Yet, perhaps you will now pray thinking
about something, clinging firmly to something, that you once assumed and thought little about, which is this: prayer is
rooted in justification, in the forgiveness of sins, in our adoption as sons, in Christ. What does this matter? As I’m out and
about as a pastor, people I don’t know see by my dress who I am and ask me to pray for them. I am glad to listen to their
concerns, of course, and to pray for them, as is my privilege and duty.17 But sometimes I also ask, “Have you tried
praying for yourself?” Often the response is something along these lines: “Oh, pastor, God will hear you. He’s not going to
listen to me.” And there we’ve moved from a question about the doctrine of prayer — “Will God hear me?” — to the
central question of the doctrine of justification: “How can God count me righteous, holy, good, acceptable, worthy in His
sight?” And that is the question to which Jesus is the most definite yes — and not just for “men in black.”
So prayer — or to back up a step, some crisis of a world subjected to futility, but in hope18 — led to a question of prayer,
which led to a question of faith, a question of the article, in fact, on which faith and the church stand or fall — the article
of justification. Does God love me? Will He hear me? Does He care? Will He see me through? If I’m speaking with a man
on the street (or perhaps if you are), this is a chance to share the Gospel, the truth that it is not our relative merits or
works that make us acceptable to God or beloved by Him, but it is the death and resurrection of Jesus, for the remission
of all our sins. The truth is that we ought not judge our status before God by the conditions of our daily existence,
whether we are rich or poor, loved or hated, free or locked up, healthy or sick — but by what Christ has done, and by the
fact that it is for us. But this point, that prayer is rooted in justification, is not just for witnessing to others when they
overhear our prayers and find them strangely confident. It is part of a vital cycle of the Christian life for each one of us, to
be brought continually back to this fact in which is our trust and to work through its implications for our entire lives.
(About this cycle, we’ll say a bit more in the next part.) To truly pray as a Christian, then, you pray not just from the
desires of your heart, but in faith, sustained by God’s Word, that for Christ’s sake God will hear you and grant you all He
has promised.19 So prayer is not just an exercise in prayer, but it demands and exercises faith and drives us into doctrine,
into the Word of Christ. In Him we are God’s own. In Him we pray and expect every good thing, even, best of all, the Holy
Spirit.20 “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working,” James says.21 Thanks be to God that by faith
in Christ, that means you!
The Revitalization Team has come and gone. They have left a report
that gave five prescriptions to help Emmaus thrive, and those items have now been voted on and
approved by the Congregation. What happens next?
1. The Church Leadership and Church Council will begin to decipher the prescriptions, and create a timeline/action plan under the direction of Gary Norton.
2. The Congregation have all been asked to pray for God’s Divine Guidance as we try to do what is pleasing to Him through this process, to make HIS church better.
3. EVERY member of Emmaus Lutheran Church was asked to step up and support the Pastors, and help serve the church, as able and as needed. This includes PRAYER, but also ACTION, as directed by the Pastors.
God has granted Emmaus Lutheran 90+ years in the community of San Gabriel Valley, and He will continue to bless it. Thank you in advance for your help.
Stay Tuned for More Information and Progress!!
Dear Friends,
The English / Chinese congregation approved the implementation of the revitalization plan for the Emmaus Congregation. Congratulations! We are now setting up a time line to meet certain deadlines prescribed by the Pacific Southwest District. Once the time line is complete we will inform you how you can
help. The season of change is in the air; God is doing great things as we speak. At our Midweek Advent service, a couple from Shanghai, China praised God for a place to worship their Savior, and they so very thankful that we were open on a Wednesday night.
To God be the Glory!
Pastor Kaye
