Page 3 GOSPEL REFLECTION REASON TO REJOICE Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sun-
day, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s pres-ence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). Soto will lead the annual Feast of the Holy Innocents Candlelight Rosary Procession and Mass. We will
meet at 6:00pm at the steps of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament (11th & K) and pray for the
sanctity of life as we walk to our Lady of Guadalupe Parish (7th & T) for bilingual Mass at
7:00pm. This March commemorates those male infants of Bethlehem who were killed by the decree of King Herod, as well as the lives of millions of innocent unborn babies killed by abortion today. For questions call

Consecration to Jesus through Mary St. Louis de Montfort, a French priest who was a Dominican tertiary, popularized this project in his book True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In a certain sense, this isn’t a single devotion but the culmination of a fullness of devotion to Mary. As he says, “we consecrate ourselves at one and the same time to Mary and to Jesus. We give ourselves to Mary because Jesus chose her as the perfect means to unite himself to us and unite us to him.”
One favorite image which St. Louis de Montfort uses to describe Mary is the “mold of God”– that is to say, the form which molds us into the image of the Image who is her Son. As one Dominican friar wrote, the consecration “is a practical form of recognition of her universal mediation and a guarantee of her special protection.”
WANTED: Helping Hands...St Joseph's Parish has been asked to help in the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet on the last Saturday in December (12/ 28) from 10 am to 2 pm. St. Joseph's was one of the first founding churches to start the Food Closet, and each month a differ-ent church works on the last Saturday of the month, and we are asked to work the last Saturday in December. This is a great opportunity to share our love for our neighbors, and it's even fun. It's a great way for a family to share GOD's love. MOTIVO DE REGOCIJO El color morado se usa duran-te el Adviento para expresar el carác-ter de este tiempo de preparación espiritual para la Navidad y la
“venida del Señor”. Pero en el Tercer Domingo de Adviento, anteriormente conocido como Domingo Gaudete (“regocijo” en latín), se puede agregar el color rosa al ambiente litúrgi-co. Toda la liturgia está impregnada de regoci-jo. La primera lectura de hoy y el Evangelio proclaman la realidad de la obra salvadora de Dios entre nosotros. Isaías describe con exube-rancia la idílica transformación de toda la crea-ción como resultado de la presencia de Dios en medio de su pueblo. En el Evangelio, Jesús vincula la profecía de Isaías con lo que está ocurriendo en su propio ministerio. Además de lista de curaciones de Isaías (los ciegos, los co-jos, los leprosos y los sordos), la presencia de Jesús ofrece otras dos razones para regocijar-nos: “Los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia el Evangelio” (Mateo 11:5). tas de poinsettia (Flor de Pascua) para colocar en la Iglesia. La planta poinsettia (Flor de Pascua) INCLUYE un adorno de oro
de la Sagrada Familia de recuerdo y una etiqueta para que usted especifiques un ser querido que será incluido en las ora-ciones de nuestra comunidad. Después de la temporada navi-deña, ustedes podrán recoger su planta y adorno. LA GRIPE
La temporada de gripe ha llegado temprano este año. La diócesis ha enviado un aviso de
que la copa de comunión se suspenderá temporalmente hasta que termine la
temporada de gripe.
También pedimos a los feligreses que no se den la mano durante el signo
de la paz ni se tome de la mano durante el Padre Nuestro.
SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ (c. 1542-1591) 14 de diciembre
Juan Yepes nació en España siendo hijo de un noble y de “una mujer de pueblo”. Ingresó a los 21 años a la orden religiosa de los Carmelitas Descal-zos, donde asumiría el nombre de Juan de la Cruz. En 1567 conoció a Teresa de Ávila, quien influen-ciaría su corazón y espiritualidad y posteriormente, junto a ella, renovarían su comunidad religiosa. No obstante, los talentos y vida espiritual de Juan de la Cruz generaron muchos celos en sus hermanos reli-
giosos a tal grado de que en 1577 lo encerraron ellos mismos durante nueve meses, expuesto a abu-sos y humillaciones. Gracias a una “noche oscura” logra escapar y vuelve a su monasterio, en el que se le siguió maltratando e ignorando. Durante su cau-tiverio y años posteriores, escribió los más bellos tratados de espiritualidad y mística, entre ellos La
noche oscura del alma. No obstante, su obra no fue valorada sino hasta después de su muerte. Debido a
la profundidad de su pensa-miento fue declarado Doctor de la Iglesia por el Papa Pío
XI en 1926.

New this year! We are pre-selling poinsettia plants to place in the Church. The poinsettia plant INCLUDES a keepsake gold Holy Family ornament and a tag for you to specify a loved one to be included in the prayers of our community. After the Christmas season, you will be able to pick up your plant and ornament. The poinsettia plants which come in a 6” pot for $12.00, are the standard size you would normally purchase at the store, approximately 18”. The Altar Society is coordinating the sale of these plants.
