ANTHONY MONKFor The Morning Star

The following story is true. Our favourite Christmas story starts on a very wet, gloomy morning

in Vancouver. It had been raining for days and our family was looking forward to getting away to the South Caribou to experience a snowy, wintry Christmas, something that rarely happens on the south coast, and something entirely new to us at the time. This was the late 70’s, and we were going to a little cabin in the woods, just north of 100 Mile House BC. On December 22nd with our two kids in tow (9 and 7 years old), off we went in the midst of a downpour.

As we drove north, it got colder and the rain turned to sleet and then snow, but after a long drive up the Fraser Canyon and beyond, we nally arrived at the cabin which seemed buried in snow. We got the wood stove going and settled into our beds. In the morning the snow had stopped; it was going to be a clear, cold day. We had some shopping to do in 100 Mile House but discovered our car was completely frozen – I could not even open a door! All that rain had saturated the car and turned it into a popsicle. So, after calling a tow truck from a neigh-bour’s house, we set off on foot to nd a Christmas tree.

At the back of the cabin property we found a sorry little tree. Someone had partially run over it with a snowmobile and it was in sad shape, bent over and broken. Our daughter insisted that this was the tree for us. So in it came, the Charlie Brown tree of all Charlie Brown trees. Our kids had brought coloured crepe paper and started making decorations. I installed a single string of lights and the little tree seemed to grow and become bushier as we worked on it. In the end it was beautiful to us.

On Christmas Eve we went to fetch our frozen car in town. The mechanic had simply put it into his shop to warm up and all was ne with it (somehow I don’t think I was the rst cold weather inexperienced west coaster he had rescued). I had also asked him to install a block heater, some-thing foreign to us in those days in Vancouver. Now back at the cabin, we enjoyed Christmas Eve watching the Christmas chimes go round

and looking at our little rescue tree. On Christmas morn-ing, we went for a day of cross-country skiing and

skating. When we returned, the aroma of a turkey slowly

cooking in that little cabin is one mem-

ory we all have to this

day. We never did get the time

to do the nal Christmas shopping in town but Santa some-

how found us anyway and it turned out to be a most memorable Christmas.

Today I could not even think of repeat-ing that snowy drive, the cabin with only a wood stove for heat and taking a rain-saturated car into the Caribou in winter – but we were young then and anything was possible. It was an adven-ture and we still talk about it when the family gets together at Christmas.

ALYSSA REYNOLDSFor The Morning Star

When Lucy was ve she gave up her most precious toy. An orange and white kitten, with fur as soft as a baby blanket. Like many of the favourite toys of ve year olds, the kitten did everything with Lucy. They painted pictures, which left the kitten with a purple ear, and they climbed through bushes and up trees, which left sap in the kitten that a thousand washings could never get out.

Today Lucy and her kitten were stomping through the snow like giants behind her parents and two older brothers on a Christmas tree hunt. Her brothers had been running around her parents for a million circles now, though a word from her mother sent them run-ning ahead to “scout for the most epic Christmas tree ever.”

Lucy wondered what an epic Christmas tree was sup-posed to look like so she asked her toy kitten. Her kitten said boys were stupid and they should sing a Christmas song so she started to hum what she thought was prob-ably Jingle Bells until mom told her to hurry up because the boys had found a tree. Lucy felt like it her birthday all over. A tree! A real tree! She couldn’t wait to tell all her friends about the tree her family got in the woods. No one else went into the woods for a Christmas tree, they just bought theirs from boring stores.

Dad had already slung out the axe by the time her short legs had caught up to the rest of her family. He grinned at her and called for a drum roll. She and her brothers yelled and stomped with Mom trilling along with them. Crack! The axe hit bark again and again.

After four swings Lucy got bored and looked at the tree instead. The branches, thick with needles, reminded

her of a real cat’s fur, thick and soft, like the uffy cat her best friend had. Thinking of her best friend’s cat made Lucy look down at her toy one and wish, for the billionth time, for a real cat of her own. She really hoped Santa would bring her one. Lucy was so caught up in wishing for a real cat she screeched in surprise as the tree fell into the snow like a million heavy pillows.

Her brothers laughed causing her to scowl and she began to march ahead when a silvery ash caught her eye. Her mother called for her to wait up but Lucy wasn’t listening, too busy as she was, peering into the trees trying to see the ash of silver again. Ah! There it was! A butter y? Lucy ran closer, paying no heed to her parents calling after her. Green and white ashed by, closing in around her like kites holding back the wind until she stumbled into an open space. Some might call it a grove, for all that there was only space for a tiny child to kneel without being crowded by trees or bushes.

A child with wings which curled off her back with an icing sugar shimmer. Lucy crouched behind a tree and watched the other child who reminded her of the brightly dressed forest dwellers in her favourite picture book who danced around mushrooms and lived in trees. What were they called? She scrunched her nose.

The little winged girl had her face in her hands and was sobbing, not loudly like Lucy’s friend after she tripped over a soccer ball; quietly, like Lucy imagined her kitten might, if toy kitten’s could cry. Lucy didn’t like it when anyone made her toy kitten cry so she tiptoed towards the girl.

The Treasure Tree cont... Once Lucy was beside her she knelt down and

wrapped her arms around the gossamer silver of the girl’s dress. Seconds past and the little winged girl’s sobs started to sound like words to Lucy, “I miss my home, I miss my home.”

“Would you like to hold my kitten?” Lucy whis-pered to her, causing the other child to leap up in surprise, rubbing at her eyes hurriedly and her wings began to flutter as if she may fly away. Lucy hadn’t moved from her position on the ground, except to set her toy kitten on the snow in front of her.

“Kitty will make you feel better,” Lucy encouraged the other girl. “She protects me from all sorts of bad and sad things and she plays with me too.”

The girl’s golden eyes widened and her wings stilled. Lucy stared back with an equally wide smile in hopes the winged girl might stay to talk and play. Instead, the girl swept down towards Lucy’s precious toy friend and pulled the orange and white kitten to her chest like a tree putting down roots. She nodded

her head, as if in thanks towards Lucy, before disappearing between the icicled pine branch-es of the forest.

One week later it was Christmas morning. Lucy had found her way back to her family, was hugged and scolded and hoped Santa had not put her on the naughty list at the last minute. She missed her toy kitten terribly but hoped the little winged girl, a faerie said a book, was happier. As she and her brothers barrelled down the stairs to the thick, fresh

pine they had chopped down the week before, they had eyes only for the rainbow of wrappings under-neath the bauble decorated boughs.

But Lucy’s eyes passed over every packet and land-ed instead on the mewling figure of an orange and white kitten who looked up at her with big golden eyes. Lucy shouted with joy and could not be separat-ed from the kitten for the rest of the day. Her parents never did figure out who left the kitten under the tree, though Lucy first thought it was obviously Santa. She forgot entirely about the little faerie until years later when other children had grown to see Santa in their parents, Lucy still had her faerie. Many, many years after that, when Lucy was grown and with a family of her own, she remembered the little faerie who had lost her tree home to Christmas.

After her own family cut down a tree, leaving only a stump behind, she left a plate of cookies in hopes of cheering the little silver blur who had darted into the woods, much like her faerie many years before.

Season’s GreetingsMay you be filled with peace and

happiness during this special time of year.

Thank you for your loyal support

throughout this year, and we look forward

seeing you in the New Year.

Much of what makes the holiday season so special is the traditions that people hold dear. While families have traditions that stretch back decades, there is plenty of opportunity to embrace new means of celebration to breathe new life into Christmas, Chanukah or the season s other holidays.

Chances are you re already hanging stockings or

going caroling this year. You can add some of these and modify as they fit for your family.

1. Feed the wildlife. During the cold days of winter, birds and small animals that don't hibernate may find it difficult to forage for food. By trimming an

outdoor pine tree in edible snacks you ll have a beautiful tree and one that benefits the wildlife as well. String peanuts and other nuts for the squirrels. Make little ornaments out of suet and string for the birds. Berries and corn can be enjoyed by all.

2. Create a photo Advent calendar. Make your own Advent calendar that has small doors that open up to photos of different family members. Or use a collection of children s pictures that showcase how they've changed as they ve grown older.

3. Adopt a child for holiday gifts. Each year you can bring a smile to a child in need by purchasing a present for an underprivileged kid. Some post offices sponsor Letters from Santa events where participants can respond to one of the thousands of letters mailed to The North Pole. Or work with a local charity that organizes events to bring gifts to children in hospitals or in foster care.

4. Holiday story countdown. Every night in December watch a movie or read a story that tells an uplifting holiday tale. Use this as a method of counting down until Christmas. On the night prior, reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas" should suffice.

5. Remember someone who has passed on. The holiday season is one made beautiful by lit candles and twinkling lights. Remember a loved one or a friend who has passed away by lighting a remembrance candle in his or her honor. It's a way this person can still be part of the festivities.

6. Have a holiday sing-a-long. Sure it may be tradition to go around the neighborhood singing carols, but it s just as fun indoors. Have a singing party where guests are given lyrics to popular tunes they can sing around the piano or karaoke machine.

7. Bring some joy to a public servant. Police officers, firefighters, military personnel ... many of these workers do not get off for the holidays. There are a certain number of public servants who must remain on call in the event of an emergency. Treat these people to something enjoyable when they may be missing their own festivities. Cook or cater a meal for a fire house, deliver cookies to the police station or put together care packages for people living on a military base.

8. Banish the holiday blues. When the holidays are set to go for another year, many people find they become a little down. After all, a home that was once filled with merry trinkets may now go back to the bare essentials. Create a tradition where everyone in the family receives one more gift, a personalized ornament that can be packed away for use next year.

Holiday traditions are fun. This year it may be time to begin some new ones to add even more enjoyment.

1. Start your day with a glass of hot

water and lemon. Not only does it help boost your metabolism but it leaves your skin looking youthful and fresh.

2. You’ve worked hard, so enjoy some downtime to revitalize the body, mind and soul. You can even have a glass of wine.

3. Don’t skip your beauty sleep. Make this a top priority every night for a rejuvenat-ed morning glow.

4. Try substituting mashed bananas for sugar in your baked goods. High in potassi-um, this is also a great way to control blood pressure.

Mom fell asleep on the couch in the front room.

At first we started out quiet, but then the unity, comraderie, fun and joy took over and we got louder and louder; we were singing at the top of our lungs, over and over, The Twelve Days of Christmas. I had so much

troom for us to be quiet and go to bed, but we would only whisper the song and, ulti-mately, get louder and louder.

I actually believe Mom was listening and maybe she would throw in a ‘yell’ every now and then to let us know we’re too loud, and to make us think she was trying to sleep.

I have carried and remembered this mem-ory of family for nearly 50 years.

As Christmas is approaching again, we all remember the Christmases when we were younger. This story takes place in a farm home in Saskatchewan, on Christmas Eve, in the mid 1930’s.

A severe winter storm with high winds is making travel difficult. A city family, on their way to spend Christmas Day with relatives, in a town 30 miles further east, are stuck in deep snowdrifts with their car. The father of the family makes his way up the road to the farmhouse, to ask the farmer to come and rescue his family from the storm.

At the farm, Charlie and Caroline Davis and their two children, are together in the kitchen. A good fire is cracling in the tin heater. The old coal oil lamp is gleaming on the kitchen table. All at once there is a loud knocking at the door. Charlie Davis got up and opened the door. A cold blast of snowy air blew in, revealing a city gen-tleman, wearing a long ‘city’ dress coat and a felt hat.

The leather gloves on his hands are scarcely adequate for the cold winter night. He said, “Hello! It’s a bad night, and I’m in trouble!”

Charlie was shocked at the man’s arrival on such a stormy night. He said “Have you come far?”

The man explained that hs wife and two children were down the road in the car, stuck in a bad drift. “It’s getting pretty cold! Can you help me?”

Charlie said: “Oh, yes. We’ll get the team and sleigh and go down and bring your family up to the house here. Let’s take some quilts to wrap them in, til we get here.”

Caroline Davis said: “I’ll make some hot cocoa for them, to get them warmed up.”

So, later, the family arrived at the farm-house, and were ushered into the warm kitchen. The four children began gettting acquaint-ed as they crowd-ed around the heat-er, sipping the hot cocoa, and nibbling on the Christmas cookies. The two men went our again, going back down the drifted road to the car. After pulling

the car out of the drifts with the team, they drew it up into the farmyard. After putting the team of horses in the barn, they made their way to the house.

Entering the warm kitchen, Charlie said to Caroline, “I guess we have company for Christmas!”

The city man, whose name was Walter Oakes, said to his wife, Betty, “My dear, these kind people have invited us to spend Christmas Day here with them and their children! If it were not for their kind-ness I don’t know what would have hap-pened to us! The road to Edam is certainly impassable.”

So what could have been a disaster, turned out to be a very enjoyable holiday. The two mothers, Betty and Caroline con-ferred together and made their new prepa-rations for Christmas Day.

Caroline Oakes said, “We have gifts with us which will be just right for your daugh-ter and son.”

The farmer’s wife Betty said, “Well, we don’t have any gifts but I’ve done a lot of Christmas baking, and we have a huge turkey that will feed us all, tomorrow!”

By this time the two girls and the boys were all busy playing games on the floor by the heater.

Charlie Davis said to Walter Oakes, “Well, if the roads are still blocked by Friday, the day after tomorrow, I can take you down to the railway at our little store, there, and you can all go back home on the train! After the roads clear a bit you can come out for the car.”

Is your annual Christmas party about as excit-ing as a funeral? Here are a few suggestions for games that are sure to put the fun back into the festive season.

The yes/no gamePreparation: give five clothes pins to each

guest, which they will attach to their clothing.Goal: throughout the evening, avoid saying

either “yes” or “no” in your conversations, at the risk of losing a peg to the person who tricked you into saying either one.

Winner: the last person to have one peg remaining.

Pass The ParcelPreparation: wrap up a gift with several layers

of paper.Goal: sitting in a circle, each participant has

a turn rolling the die until someone gets a “6”. The lucky one must then quickly put on a pair of oven mitts (a hat and scarf are optional) and try to unwrap the gift until someone else rolls a “6” and so on.

Winner: the one who succeeds in unwrapping the gift.

Tip: when wrapping, be sure to use lots of boxes and plastic bags and excessive amounts of tape!

mysTery jarPreparation: fill a glass jar (or any other trans-

parent container) with candies.Goal: without them being able to touch it, ask

guests to write down their guess at the number of candies in the jar.

Winner: the one who guesses the closest number to the answer. This person also wins the great pleasure of sampling the goodies!

Tip: choose candies of varying sizes, shapes, and colours. Don’t forget to count them before closing the jar!

Old favourites such as charades are still suit-able for all occasions and all age groups. And don’t forget another “new” classic: karaoke! Lots of fun guaranteed!

PARTY

Some smells seem to be permanently engraved in our memories. Scents synonymous with our fondest childhood memories can take us back through the years in the blink of an eye. A room filled with the scent of cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg will instantly bring to mind Grandma’s gingerbread cookies or Dad’s hot chocolate sprinkled with cinnamon.

That’s probably why we rush to stock up with hol-iday spices and foods that will fill our homes with exotic fragrances. Just think of the oranges we used to find in the bottom of our Christmas stock-ings, a throwback to earlier days when citrus fruits were precious, rare treats. Indeed, sticking a few cloves into an orange will fill a room with a rich perfume, both sweet and spicy and most definitely Christmassy. To really get into the holiday spirit you can always rely on the wonders of Mother Nature. Start with the fir tree, the king of the forest. To ornament your

living room with one of these fragrant beauties, choose a balsam fir — its delicious scent makes it the ideal Christmas tree. Other plants and flowers are also great Christmas traditions:

• The poinsettia, also known as the Christmas star, is easily recognized by its impressive, bright red bracts;

• Holly, with its prickly leaves and red berries, which make it the Christmas symbol par excellence;

• The Jerusalem cherry or winter cherry pro-duces a multitude of small, colourful berries in November that look appetizing but are toxic; • The Christmas cactus, which bears magnificent flowers on the tips of its branches;• The Christmas kalanchoe, whose flow-ers come in a range of colours and whose leaves are sometimes tinged with red;• The amaryllis, with its enormous flow-ers, making it an ideal gift;• M i s t l e t o e , hung from the ceiling and under which tradi-tion demands that two people must kiss.

Season’sGreetings

As the holiday season approaches,

our hearts are warmed by

thoughts of the many good people

we’ve had the opportunity to serve this year.

You’ve certainly brightened our year!

Thank you for your support and loyalty.

We look forward to seeing you in the

New Year.

• Make it a themed party. The holiday season is filled with festivities, from office parties to neighborhood gatherings to gatherings with family. For more casual affairs, set your party apart with a theme. For example, a Christmas sweater party, where each guest wears a Christmas sweater, can be a fun way to excite guests and inspire a few laughs. Give a prize to the guest with the most ornate sweater.

• Don’t forget the holiday fare. Just like parties are a staple of the holiday season, so, too, are certain foods and types of music. Few people indulge in some eggnog outside of the holiday season, so make sure there s plenty of eggnog on hand. And don t forget the gingerbread cookies, either. As people enjoy holiday goodies, make sure they do so with holiday music playing in the background. Choose songs that guests know and to which they can sing along. Such sing-alongs might become especially memorable once guests have a glass or two of eggnog in them.

• Host a holiday giveaway. Though it can be fun to do a Secret Santa, chances are guests already have enough gifts to buy. But hosts can spice things up with a hol iday g i v e a w a y t h a t rewards guests. Host a holiday-themed round of Trivial Pursuit or a holiday movie trivia game that encourages guests to compete for prizes. Prizes can be small and inexpensive, but guests will be sure to enjoy some friendly compet i t ion for h o l i d a y - t h e m e d prizes.

• Don’t be afraid to take it outside. For those who live in r e g i o n s w i t h significant snowfall, consider invit ing guests outside to have some fun in the snow. While fun in the snow is often left to the kids, don t assume adults won t enjoy building some snowmen or a good o l d f a s h i o n e d snowball fight in the backyard. If outdoor fun is going to be on the docket, be sure to remind guests to dress appropriately. And make sure there s plenty of hot chocolate ready once everyone goes back

inside to warm up.• Prearrange transportation home for

guests. A successful holiday party is one that is safe, so be sure to prearrange travel home for guests just in case anyone overindulges in holiday cheer. When sending out invitations, seek volunteers to be designated drivers, and avoid drinking alcohol yourself. For larger parties, call a local taxi service and arrange for a couple of cabs to be on call when the party ends.

The holidays are the most festive time of the year, and no holiday season is complete without a party or two with family and friends. Be it to celebrate a religious holiday or to ring in the New Year, a holiday party is an essential element to the holiday season. While it’s always great to be a guest, hosting a holiday party is a great way to show friends and family how much they mean to you. This holiday season, consider the following tips to ensure your holiday party is as memorable as the season is merry.

From the staff at

Get more exercise, maintain a healthier diet, improve the way you manage your fi nances, stop smoking, use the car less... December is barely over and your list of New Year’s res-olutions is as long as your arm! Fortifi ed with steely determination and raring to go, you have every intention of starting off the New Year on the right foot. And yet, as time goes by, your resolutions slip away. Why is it so darn diffi cult to keep New Year’s resolutions?

First of all, human beings don’t like change and leaving their comfort zone is easier said than done. All your best intentions and your motivation will tend to fade away after a few weeks of hard work unless you redouble your zeal.

The key? Use some common sense and

don’t lie to yourself. Having two, three, four, or even fi ve resolutions on your list is all very well on paper, but it’s not feasible in reality. Concentrate your eff orts on just one reso-lution and do your utmost to succeed in it. Otherwise you’ll keep going down the same frustrating path year after year.

Be realistic. Would you like to lose some weight? Set yourself an objective that is within your reach so you won’t become discouraged and give up. Take it one week at a time and keep notes on your progress. If you ever feel like giving up, look at your notes and you may be surprised by the progress you’ve made. And don’t hesitate to ask for the support of your loved ones. Their love is an everlasting source of motivation!
