I hope that you have thought about someone you think qualifies for the Nebraska Region’s Worker’s Cup, Woody Dunn Memorial award and the R.J. Wilson Sponsor’s Cup. The Worker’s cup is for a Nebraska Region member who you consider did an outstanding job during the year at a regional event(s), above and beyond the responsibilities of their elected position. The Woody Dunn is presented to a member who you consider has made an outstanding contribution to the Nebraska Region, again, above and beyond the duties of their elected position. The R.J. You can see the former winners of these trophies on the Nebraska Region’s History website at www .nrsccahistory .com. If you have an idea for any of these trophies, please submit your entries to a Board of Governor in writing (email [email protected]) with an explanation of why you think your nominee qualifies for the award. you, George! Jerry Doctor was the Chairman of the event and he, alongwith his many helpers, did a wonderful job. Jon Simmons and West Pierceput together two fun courses for the event. Mark Walker did a great job withTiming, keeping the event running smoothly. April Doctor, Chuck Garcia,John Hunter, Jean Smith and Tim Walter were among the Nebraska Regionmembers who helped the event run well.

Kudos goes out to all who helped put together the Midwest DivisionConvention. Without Patt Buell, Stan Cisar, Chuck Garcia, Chris Safranek,Jean Smith, Natha Waldbaum and Ellen Zitzlsperger, I know we couldn’thave pulled it off. Thank you to Don Knop, for putting together the SoloCourse Design seminar. Thank you to Mark Walker, for putting together theinformation for RallyCrosses into a seminar. And definitely thank you toBob Woodhouse for speaking at the banquet. I can’t forget to thank Jan forputting up with me in the weeks before, while I fretted over something orother. I have heard many complements about the convention from thosewho attended. So give yourselves a round of applause for a job well done!

Sunday was the final RallyCross event of the year at Jim Wood’s place inLincoln. By the looks of the construction beginning, this was probably ourlast opportunity to use his land for RallyCrossing. Thank you, Jim for yourgenerosity in allowing the club to use the land to play on.

As our season comes to an end, it is the time of year when your Board ofGovernors elect the officers who will help to run your club. There are severalpeople who are ready to step down from their current positions thus leavingthem open for someone new to take over. The NRSCCA.com website hasthe list of officers moving on to other things. If you or someone you know ofis interested in one of the openings, please come to the Board of Governors’meeting on November 30th for nominations and elections. And if you can’tmake this meeting, please let a Board member know so that you may benominated.

The Annual Awards Banquet will be January 27, 2007, at Castle Barrett. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending. I know Jan and I will bethere.

I want to thank everyone for making my first term as your Regional Executivean exciting one. I have enjoyed the year with its many ups and downs. I am

NEBRASKA REGION - EXHAUST NOTES PAGE 9

My first intimate exposure to SCCA Club Racing came inthe mid 1960s from a farmer from Mabel, Minnesotaand a telephone company lineman from Viroqua,Wisconsin. Richard Ryan was an exceptional mechanicin almost any form of motor sport and Donald McIntosha very savvy EP driver. They had many successes in the1960s with the Porsche Speedster. Beyond racingRichard was a very accomplish musician. Never heardof an instrument he could not master. He had a love ofcircus music and joined a group faithful to the music’spreservation. For many years he journeyed to thegroup’s annual gathering where along with many of thevery experienced directors and band members theyplayed most of the day and well into the evening hours. But then the group became overrun with PhDs who triedto make the music something it was never intended ormeant to be. Richard explained that circus music wasnever written or accomplished to be an end unto itself.

I was purely supportive. People came to the circus tosee the acts and the animals in the ring. Music set themood or the tone. It was the elephants, lions, giraffes, clowns, and the flying trapeze artists that brought forththe excitement and the cherished memories. And asthe PhDs more and more made the circus music an endunto itself, the older generation of those true to thecircus were saddened and began to drift away.

For SCCA Runoffs races, just as with the circus, thosethings supporting the main event are equally important. But it is only when the first car takes the green andheads toward turn one that the performers have finallycourageously entered the ring and the show has begun. For me, with that magic stirring the air, my mind beingthat of a spectator, turns away from those things thatare simply supportive and like a horse with blinders thefocus is narrowed to the excitement in the “ring”. Whatwas observed this October at Topeka was again, thevery thing repeatedly seen, sensed, and experienced somany joyful times at MidOhio. What one racer said “Ifthe Runoffs were held on a Wal-Mart parking lot I wouldbe there”. And I am sure from a racer’s perspectivethat from the moment the cars left the grid until thecheckered flag fell the thoughts were on the challengesof the moment.

They were not about those things that were simplysupportive and the minor irritation they might havecaused. The reality is that what occurs in the “ring” atthe Runoffs is very unique. And those who haveexperienced that joy and challenge would not trade itoff easily.

And next year, wherever the Runoffs are held, likegladiators they will be there to once again aspire toreach the pinnacle of our sport. I think that those whohave won simply see the supportive issues and irritationsas noise. A noise they don’t ever let distract them from

The Run Offs . . . by Frank Groverthe monumental task at hand. Dwell on the noise andthe chance to win will fade fast and be forever lost.

11-1-06 . . .The final checkered flag of the MiDiv racingseason fluttered last Sunday over the Gateway track asJames Stevens got the outright victory he needed tobecome the last driver this year to win a new driver’ssuit from SafeRacer. Earlier in the day Patrick Findleyjoined the list, making just seven drivers who met theminimum requirements of four outright victories (firston the track in a class of at least two cars) to qualifyfor Driver of the Year.

Chris Albin (SIll) of course, won that honor for a record10th time — a mark that may never be beaten other than byAlbin himself extending it. Albin didn’t even race as much asin years past (at least not in ITB as he also had a GP nationalprogram going), but still won 11 times, eight of them outright.

Stevens joined Albin as the only two drivers to score themaximum possible 84 points, but he needed that fourthoutright victory after finishing third in the Saturday portion ofthe Spooktacular double Regional, and got it third overall behindtwo Spec Miatas in the last race of the day.

Twenty-three new champions will be receiving the handsomeclocks given annually to the best of the Mid-Am.

• FM ~ Another door left unopened as Gary Phillips (KC)gave the final weekend a pass but saw his slim lead hold upwhen his closest challenger did the same.

• FF ~ Don Nelson (Neb) won once in April, twice in August, and the Bonus. Tim Koch (KC) was within range but Nelsonbecame champ when neither took on the Spooktacular.

• ITE ~ The turning point was probably the DNF by BuddyCisar (Neb) at Heartland Park in July. Andy Wolverton (Neb)already had six wins by then, and later added two more, buthis season ended with a DNF at the Bonus Race. Cisar’s DNFmeant he didn’t qualify for bonus points and had to settle forthe regular score when he won it, then he won both ends ofthe Spooktacular. By that time Wolverton, fourth in the DotYrankings, was out of reach.
