We’ve never had a Jewish president! Well, maybe not officially, but Avraham Lincoln cer- tainly had a Jewish first name. My grandmother qvelled when she heard that; she thought he was a Jew. In many respects, Lincoln manifested traits which we have come to think of as quintessentially Jew- ish. You all know the image of him sprawled out on his tummy in front of a roaring fire, scratching out his lessons on a board with a piece of charcoal. The love of learning that we connect with Jewish life was very much a continuing part of Lincoln’s life. That alone ought to qualify him as an honor- ary Jew. A second trait in Lincoln’s life was an internal imperative to do what is right, regardless of the political and emotional costs. America in the 1860s was a nation torn by various hatreds and sectional issues, but one characteristic was com- mon to both North and South: people were in- tensely suspicious of the increasing Jewish popu- lation of the country. To be sure, there were very few overt incidents of anti-Semitism; but a very large percentage of the population were captives of age-old prejudices that had been imported from Europe by their parents or by themselves. In 1862, as the Army of the Tennessee under General Ulysses Grant swept south from Ken- tucky into Tennessee and then northern Missis- sippi, contraband trading was widespread. Judeo- phobes in Grant’s headquarters blamed Jewish profiteers. Accordingly, Grant issued General Order #11 which banished “Jews as a class” from the region and gave them only a very few days to depart from the occupied area. It is altogether likely that some Jews were involved in this illegal trade, but the blanket and group-inclusive nature of the General Order qualifies it as an anti- Semitic act.

While Jewish merchants and traders were packing up to leave, a delegation of Jews from Paducah KY and Evansville IN headed upstream on the Ohio River to Cincinnati. From there, they took the newly-completed Baltimore & Ohio Railroad across the Ap-palachian Mountains, all the way to the nation’s capi-tol. When they arrived, their leader, Cesar Kaskel, got directions to the White House and led his intrepid band directly from the station to the President’s resi-dence. He banged on the door and demanded to see Mr. Lincoln. It’s inconceivable today, but in 1862 Kaskel and his comrades were admitted and given a short audience. They explained to a stunned Lincoln what GO #11 was about. The President immediately concluded that the order was improper and dictated a memo ordering it to be revoked at once. Kaskel and his supporters went home. Here we have but one example of Lincoln’s devotion to the cause of justice and right rather than expedi-ency. Politically, he could have made significant gains from appearing to dislike Jews; but he knew that this was wrong, and he would not do it. This was a stance that reminded Kaskel and reminds us of the prophets of biblical Israel who spoke God’s truth, re-gardless of consequence or cost to themselves. Finally, Lincoln recognized that it would be a disaster to allow the United States of America to split into two nations, one slave, one free. So, too, Jews, although for a different reason. Jews had come to these shores seeking the economic opportunities that had been de-nied them in Europe. Quickly, they understood that the chance to make a successful new life was en-hanced by American unity and would be diminished by sectional division. For Lincoln and for Jews, un-ion was paramount; division would be devastating. Coming from different directions, they shared an identical objective. I know Lincoln was not really Jewish, as much as I would like to adopt this Avraham as one of ours. But what he stood for and the way he conducted himself complemented Jewish values and goals in a marvel-ous fashion. In 2009, let’s celebrate this (arguably) greatest of all American presidents. After all, you wouldn’t want to disappoint my grandmother and tell her that he wasn’t Jewish, would you? Fondly, Kenneth D. Roseman, Rabbi

PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

Dear Members of CBI,

Winter is fast approaching as we head into the Holidays. Food Fest was once again a great success thanks to the hard work of Sister-hood and all of you too numerous to mention who took time out to volunteer your time and efforts. Not only was Food Fest a financial success, it was also a very positive effect on the community who would not normally have the opportunity to share in our culture. On behalf of your Board of Trustees, I want to personally thank everyone involved and look for-ward to next year’s event. Rabbi Roseman’s weekend of events focus-ing on anti-Semitism was from all present well attended and received. Representatives from the Houston Chapter of the Anti-Defamation League presented very timely information as well as an-swered questions on a topic we all wish we wouldn’t have to talk about but which is still very much alive both here and abroad. If you have a subject or area you feel is worthy of being dis-cussed and of interest to the Congregation, we are always looking for suggestions that we can look into that can be offered as a weekend event. Early in December Rabbi Roseman will be out having knee surgery which has been long-coming. We all wish him a speedy recovery. He has made alternative plans in the event his ser-vices are needed, please advise Debbie at the of-fice if you need any assistance from him during this time. Finally Iris and I wish each and every-one a very Happy Hanukkah and New Year and hope it also brings you good health. Andy Lehrman President Congregation Beth Israel

Dear Parents and Grandparents, Please read about this Jewish event happening in CC. Research has proven that children who have a Jewish Camp experience, are astronomically more likely to remain affiliated with Jewish organizations and care about Israel throughout their lives. They are 70% more likely to marry within the Jewish faith and raise the next generation of Jewish chil-dren. Both my son and daughter (and I) at-tend(ed) Camp Young Judaea. Some of my best memories and oldest friendships are from CYJ. Please join Yael, Asst. Director, from Camp Young Judaea at 11:15 am on Sun-day, December 7th at Congregation Beth Israel in the big sanctuary to see a short film about CYJ and to ask any questions you may have about CYJ in Wimberley, TX. You won't regret this 40 minute time investment in the fu-tures of our children. Kids, parents, grandparents are welcomed to attend. Thanks, Roz Ferrell

SPECIAL THANKS Congregation Beth Israel, the Board and the Rabbi all express great gratitude to Jill Jacobs, Rikki Schmitchel, Natalie Honigbaum, Dottie Heffler, Ann Engel, Debbie Bustillo and Rose Garza and all the other folks who worked so diligently to make our 2008 Food Fest such a marvelous success. Many, many members of the congregation (and even some non-members) pitched in to produce a tremen-dous event, and we are all very grateful.

As you celebrate the Festival of Lights

may your home be bright with happiness and love.

CBI Community Garden Planning meeting Sunday December 7, 2008 10 a.m All who are interested in getting this project off the ground PLEASE come to this meeting. The success of this endeavor depends on a good core group of gardening enthusiasts, and volun-teers. It is time to start digging, preparing ground for planting in the Spring. My garden does better right now than in the blazing heat of summer. How about yours?

Fair Trade Coffee Conventionally traded coffee passes through many hands from the coffee bush to the cuppa joe you purchase... The farmer, the caretaker of the crop and the earth, receives a fraction of a penny for every dollar you spend. Consequently, small farm poverty, or plantation slavery is the

reality for a lot of coffee-growing; and slash and burn, single crop, chemical-intensive farm practices pre-vail, to save on costs. Fair Trade companies see the farmer as a partner in an enterprise meant to benefit the farming families, and the earth that they tend, while providing quality products to consumers. By guaranteeing above market prices for the coffee, and making available low interest loans, Fair Trade companies make viable small farms and co-ops that can provide for their families and communities, and can invest in sustainable agricul-tural practices: these partners enrich and protect the soil, increase biodiversity (coffee grows well in the shade of citrus trees or other canopy) cool the earth, and refrain from the use of harsh chemicals. Please try to purchase Fair Trade products whenever possible, for both Social Justice, and Ecological rea-sons. Equal Exchange Fair Trade organic coffee, tea and cocoa were sold at this year's Jewish Food Fest. We sold a lot, but there is still some left: Flavored drip grind coffee 12 oz.$10; Bright Day drip coffee 12 oz. $9; Sister's Blend coffee 16oz $10; Hot Cocoa Mix $8; Earl Grey Tea $4; Wild Rooibos (herbal) tea $6. Visit the Sisterhood Store and get some for the holidays!

Environmental Survey Some of you have returned your filled out Environmental Survey! There are a couple of days left to turn them in. We will tally the results and present them at the December 7th meeting (10 am). Please come and make suggestions for ways our congregation can take a lead in Environmental Tikkun Olam in Corpus Christi.

Recycling Be aware that CBI is recycling: paper in the offices, and aluminum and plastics 1&2 in the kitchen. Look for the green recycle bins!
