. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Regular Programs Cont. Turn the Page Book Club – Submitted by Pat & Alexander Miller "Medicine Walk" by Richard Magamese was this month's read. It is a novel about love, friendship,

courage, and the idea that the land has within it powers of healing. Medicine Walk reveals the ultimate goodness of its characters and offers a deeply moving and redemptive conclusion. Wagamese's writing soars and his insight and compassion are matched by his gift of communicating these to the reader. This is our second book by this author. The first one was "Indian Horse" and we gave that one an overall rating of 9.

Franklin Starlight is called to visit his father, Eldon. He's sixteen years old and has had the most fleeting of relationships with the man. The rare moments they've shared haunt and trouble Frank, but he answers the call, a son's duty to a father. He finds Eldon decimated after years of drinking, dying of liver failure in a small town flophouse. Eldon asks his son to take him into the mountains, so he may be buried in the traditional Ojibway manner. What ensues is a journey through the rugged and beautiful backcountry, and a journey into the past, as the two men push forward to Eldon's end. From a poverty-stricken childhood, to the Korean War, and later the derelict houses of mill towns, Eldon relates both the desolate moments of his life and a time of redemption and love and in doing so offers Frank a history he has never known, the father he has never had, and a connection to himself he never expected. It was a beautiful and well written book. We gave it an overall rating of 9.5.

We are still at full capacity so I am sorry we are unable to accommodate any more folks interested in joining us. Should space become available, we will announce it in the newsletter. Second Book Club – Submitted by Pauline Rice

Every month we all read the same book of the month from the library and then discuss it at the following month’s meeting. The books all take us out of our normal comfort reading zone and we have all discovered delightful books that we would never have read were it not for the book club. We have lively discussions which are very enjoyable even if that particular book was not our favorite. If you love to read, we invite you to join our group. New members and guests are always welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:00 am in the Hemlock

Room at Echo Centre. For more information, email Pauline Rice at [email protected] Bowling Our group enjoys fun, recreational bowling in a friendly, encouraging environment. We have room for

new bowlers and we encourage you to join in the fun and laughter! We bowl Monday morning starting at 9:30 am at Rainbow Lanes. Please arrive at 9:15 am so we can get organized and start bowling at 9:30 am. Bowling is a lot of fun and provides a great opportunity for exercise, friendship, laughter and smiles! Cal Davies is the director. The cost to play is $10 per person each week. This fee is paid directly to the bowling alley each week. If you are interested in joining this activity, please show up to the bowling

alley on Mondays at 9:30 am to meet with the director, Cal Davies. Carpet Bowling - Submitted by Joyce Luecke A reminder to anyone interested in learning carpet bowling that Fridays are for drop in bowling and the not tournament days. We gather at 12:15 and start bowling at 12:30. Everyone is welcome to join us and learn this fun and interesting game. We hope you join us! Clogging Instructor Richard Anderson welcomes members to come and try clogging and see how much fun it is. It is a great activity for mind and body. Beginners are welcome from 1:30 - 2:00 pm and intermediate dancers from 2:00 – 2:30 pm. Please join us for this activity that is both fun and healthy! Pottery Update – Submitted by Alanna Miller Welcome to December!! This is always a fun time of year in the Pottery Room. The pressure is on to finish our last Christmas gifts. When the final kiln load is fired there will be lots of excitement to see how our creations turn out. Most of us have been working on projects since we came back in September but there is always some last minute ideas that we simply must have for Christmas. There are tree decorations, and a variety of ideas on the gift list from soap trays to sculptures. If you happen to be the recipient of one of these homemade treasures, you can be assured they were made with lots of love. In the New Year feel free to come round the back to Craft Room B on any Tuesday or Friday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. In the meantime from all of us at pottery… have a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Regular Programs Cont. Digital Photography Group- Submitted by Janis Cameron

The Digital Photography Group will not be having a meeting in December. Instead, we are going to be having a fun field trip with our cameras at the Naasgaard Winter Wonderland! We are really looking forward to the field trip. Starting with our January meeting, our start time will be 10:00 am and end at 11:30. So if you wanted to join our group but thought 9:30 time was too early maybe having a 10:00 am start will be

better for you. Our group would like to wish all members a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Floor Curling – Submitted by Larry Lehtonen

It is an easy game to learn and participants enjoy the fun and socialization. Coffee, tea and cookies are available between games for $1.00. Please note: in an effort to be environmental friendly, we will no longer be using styrofoam cups for coffee. Volleyball Update: Looking for New Players – Submitted by John Van Apeldoorn

Volleyball was off to a slow start in October but we acquired a few new members and some even enticed their friends to come. So we had a good session on October 30. We need to keep these numbers up for everyone’s maximum enjoyment. I appeal to all members to commit to attending as regularly as possible to maintain this as an active Sunshine Club sport. There will be no volleyball in December as school gyms are not available. Volleyball will

recommence on January 8, 2020. All sessions are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at EJ Dunn School. We enjoy evenings of non-serious, fun-filled sessions. Experience is not necessary as we are there to help and most people catch on very quickly. All Sunshine Club members are welcome to participate. New members please consider this activity! Season’s Greetings to everyone! Walking Groups The Walking groups are taking a winter break. However, a few diehards have decided to continue to enjoy the great Trails of the Alberni Valley on their own initiative as long as the weather holds. We plan to start up again in the Spring. Look for announcements in the Spring newsletter for more start up details.

We would like to extend a warm “sunshine” welcome to the following people who have joined our Club recently: Verna Proulx Dan Kornyk Ted Williams Lynne Blender Davina McCombie Benedict David Jens Van Draby Mike Markstein Sherry Lyons Julie Swaney Patricia Messenger Joan Thurston Fran Poaps Diane Brazzale Tineke Pagani Jerry Whitney Barbara Cranage Cathy Whyte Casey Vanschie Melody Charlton Trent Ward Lynne Holder Deb Swain Carol Hamilton Donna Green Carol Jawarski Gerald Labute Sherry Harrison “Scent Free Zone” No scents makes good sense! Members are reminded that all Sunshine Club activities and programs are “scent free.” There are members who are highly allergic and have respiratory sensitivities to smells from perfume, colognes, lotions, oils, hairspray, etc. so members are encouraged to please refrain from wearing scents while attending Sunshine Club activities, events, etc. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

In Case of Snow / Ice and Questionable Road Conditions Winter is here… and we want to advise members that some programs may be cancelled due to snow or bad, icy weather. Sometimes the director will cancel an activity (especially if it is a small group and members will call one another to let them know) or sometimes the activity will still take place for those members who want to “drop in” and take part. If you are feeling concerned about the weather conditions, we encourage members to stay home. We don’t want anyone risking injury by falling or getting in an accident when it’s not necessary. If you are unsure if the program is on or not, please call the Sunshine Club office at 250 720-2505 or phone Echo Centre front desk at 250 723-2181.

Please note: if an activity is continuing to run but you are uncomfortable with the road conditions and weather, please stay home! We do not want anyone hurt or putting themselves in a dangerous position.

Important note for directors: If you are cancelling your activity, please be sure to call the receptionist at Echo Centre (250 723-2181) as soon as possible and let her know so she can cancel the room and let the maintenance know. Otherwise, the Sunshine Club pays for the room bookings if they are not cancelled. Also let the Sunshine Club office know if the program is cancelled.

Season’s Greetings from the Parks, Recreation & Heritage Staff The Parks and Recreation Staff would like to wish all Sunshine Club members, volunteers and the Executive a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. May the holiday season be full of love, laughter and joy and may the New Year bring you good health and much happiness!
