Senior 4-H’ers - To apply for area/state 4-H recognition opportunities including state 4-H project awards, Tech Team, State 4-H Council, National 4-H Congress, and National 4-H Conference visit the websitehttp://www.extension.iastate.edu/webster/kidsteens.htm. Support materials are due to the State 4-H Office by February 1. 9th through 12th graders will be receiving information in the mail. Interviews will be March 26 in Ames. The Iowa 4-H Foundation announces 100 4-H scholarships totaling over $100,000 for college freshman and upperclassmen for fall 2011. High school seniors may request an application packet from the EO or visit the website http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/teens/awards.htm. Graduating seniors will be receiving information in the near future. Applications are due to the State 4-H Office before or on February 1. Please remember to get your re-enrollment forms turned in if you haven’t done so already. We are also happy to announce that baby Hedlund has arrived! Drew Dorian Hedlund was born on November 6th at 3:25am. Baby Drew weighted 6lbs and 11oz., and was 20.5 inches long. Mom (Natalie), dad, and baby are doing great! High school students - plan ahead to apply for awards/scholarships. High school students are eligible to apply for area/state recognition including: State Council National 4-H Conference State project awards

National 4-H Congress Iowa Tech Team To apply, prepare four pages of support material (due Feb. 1) and interview on March 26th in Ames. Senior 4-H’ers will be receiving additional information directly from the Extension Office. The EO will be sending a direct mailing to all senior aged 4-H’ers sharing the specifics of these opportunities. Seniors: 4-H scholarship information and applications will be due Feb.1 to the State 4-H Office Forms are available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/teens/awards.htm

The County Council is taking recipes to include in their 2011 Cook Book. If you would like to include your recipe email Mollie Haglund at [email protected] or Natalie Hedlund at [email protected]. You may also drop your recipes off at the Extension Office at anytime.

The dates for the Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) Trip to Washington D.C. will be June 18-25, 2011. Grab Your Shirts…..Slip on Your Sandals and join Dairy enthusiasts for a fun-filled Hawaiian luau at this year’s annual Iowa Junior Holstein Convention on December 28-29 at the Bluffs Inn in Decorah, Iowa. All youth ages 8-21 interested in dairy are invited to attend the convention. There will be fun quiz bowl and jeopardy competitions, mixer games, pizza and a dance. N.C. IOWA YOUTH BEEF CONFERENCE JUNIOR FAIRBOARD MEMBER

The Boone County Fair Board is

looking for Junior Fair Board members

to utilize the ideas and skills of 4H and

FFA members. Applicants should be in

the 11th or 12th grade of the current

school year. Junior members have no

voting privileges but are encouraged to

attend Fair Board meetings, which are

held on the first Monday night of each

month. Junior members may present

ideas, give input and are expected to

help at the fair and at other work

times. Junior members may not drive

gators or other equipment at the

fairgrounds. One-year terms for junior

members run from Oct. 1 thru Sept 30.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation is hosting a

4-H Day at the Iowa State Women’s

basketball game versus Texas

A&M on Saturday, January 22nd,

2011 at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

Tip-off is at 11:00am.Ticket price is

just $15 per person and includes:

admission to game, pre-game tailgate

brunch (food & drink) at the Iowa State

Center Scheman Building (first floor),

Exclusive Cyclone 4-H t-shirt, $2

An educational program sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Ellsworth Community College for Iowa youth involved with beef production will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011, at the Ellsworth Agriculture and Renewable Energy Center from The youth program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. A variety of interactive workshops and sessions are being planned for youth 4

th grade through

high school. Topics include: Breeding Stock Selection; Beef Reproduction and Artificial Insemination; Palpation and Pregnancy Checking Demonstration; and an Introduction to Meats Judging. This event is free, lunch will be provided, parents are welcome to stay. Please pre-register at your local ISU County Extension Office by January 21.

The Boone County 4-H Youth Committee is looking for new adult members to serve a 2-year term (with an optional second 2-year term) and older youth to serve a 1-year term. Terms run from January to December. Committee members serve as club liaisons, determine county 4-H policy, help carry out county 4-H events, and select and present county award recipients. Do you have an interest and enjoy small pets? Consider being the Small Pets Superintendent. The Small Pets Superintendent organizes and supervises judging, exhibits, and activities in pets division at the Boone County Fair. Please let Natalie Hedlund know if you are interested. 432-3882

This retreat brings together 4-H

volunteers, staff, parents, and

intermediate and senior 4-H

members to network and learn about

innovative programs that will help

bring fresh perspectives and activities

to Iowa 4-H programs. All activities

will take place at the Des Moines Area

Community College (DMACC)

Campus in Ankeny on Friday,

February 11th and Saturday the 12th.

Volunteers will be able to catch up on

their fall and spring required training

modules by enrolling in those modules

at the February State Volunteer

Retreat. Thanks to a grant from

Monsanto, the registration fee this

thank you goes to all club leaders and club members who submitted forms by November

24th. Clubs reaching the 80% goal will be awarded ice cream and toppings for a club

4-H PAPER CLOVER FUNDRAISING

January 17th, 2011 will mark the 25

th anniversary of

the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday. If your 4-H club will be involved in a service project during this time, we would like to know about it! The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service is encouraging all community organizations to register their MLK Day projects at www.volunteeriowa.org. Martin Luther King Jr Service Project GET OUT YOUR SKATES!

Bring your family and your club on January 9th to go ice skating at the Ames Ice Arena from 2-4 pm. Wear a 4-H shirt and admission is just $3.00 and skate rental is $1.75.

Spring SESS Instructor Certification The dates have been set for the 2011 Spring SESS Instructor Training. The training will be held at the Iowa 4-H Center on April 1-3, 2011. Registration information will be available soon.
