On November 22 Tyson Food Inc. rolled into the Montana Food Bank Network with 38,000 pounds of frozen chicken! The donation was prompted by musician Huey Lewis and started almost two years ago when Huey first became involved with MFBN by providing voiceover work for a short film presented at MFBN’s 2010 Gala. In the course of reading the information, Huey, a Montana resident, became very familiar with the severity of food insecurity in our state and the work of MFBN and partner agencies to combat it and also lent his voice to several PSA’s for MFBN on hunger issues. Huey kept Montana’s emergency food system on his mind and brought up the hunger in Montana while golfing in Ireland with his friend John Tyson. Their conversation culminated in this incredible donation – enough chicken to provide protein for 120,000 meals! MFBN was indeed thankful for this well-timed donation and is extremely grateful to all of those involved with making it happen. Featured Product: Tyson Chicken Unsurprisingly, December’s featured product is Tyson chicken! The chicken, which is mostly drumsticks with some whole birds, will be available on the Donated Shopping List under Item #’s 5905 (drumsticks-40 lb cases) and 5906 (whole birds-50 lb cases). Agencies yet to receive product in December will have the opportunity to receive chicken directly off the back of the MFBN truck at the time of their delivery. Agencies that are able to pick up at the MFBN warehouse can do so by contacting the warehouse and arranging a time (please call first!). The chicken incurs standard shared maintenance (SMF) and delivery fees – 19 cents/lb. SMF and 6 cents/lb. delivery. This translates to $10/case delivered or $7.40/ case without delivery fee. Happy Holidays! MFBN has partnered with the National Bison Range and Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks to receive a large donation of various wild game animals. The partnerships with both organizations arose as a result of MFBN being the statewide food distributer. Since both are also state organizations they wanted to equitably send the meat throughout Montana to help those in need. The animals are currently being processed and will be added to MFBN Donated Shopping Lists immediately when they are ready for distribution. The meat will be available at processing cost (undetermined as of yet) rather than the regular shared maintenance fee. Thanks to this great partnership MFBN will be able to provide another valuable source for protein. Be on the lookout for wild game on your shopping lists in early 2012! Missoula Food Bank Turkey Drive Shows the Giving Spirit of Local Communities

Please tell our Governor that emergency food funding needs to increase! As referenced in a December 1st e-mail to partner agencies, MFBN has sent another letter to Governor Schweitzer requesting that he look at the state budget for emergency or discretionary funds that could be provided to MFBN to support the emergency food system. Since the economic recession struck and cuts in funding ended the FAM program it has been increasingly difficult to provide sufficient food to keep up with the increasing need.

Please send Governor Schweitzer a letter, an e-mail, or call his office and convince him how important it is that the Network receives emergency funds for food purchase to keep all of our shelves stocked and our clients fed. Use your own operations and challenges to illustrate the need – increases in new clients or client visits, decreases in food box product, bare shelves, and client stories are powerful tools for painting an accurate picture of food insecurity to those who, unlike all of us, do not see it every day.

Here is the Governor’s contact information including this link to email the Governor directly -- http://governor.mt.gov/contact/commentsform.asp :

Days before Thanksgiving the Missoula Food Bank held its annual Let’s Talk Turkey Program, a two-day event where turkeys were handed out to families in need. After day one, the Missoula Food Bank found itself in dire straits with only 200 of their 1,200 turkeys remaining. The Missoula Food Bank put a call out to the local community asking for 600 turkey donations. The response of the local community and surrounding communities was overwhelming. Within hours 1,500 additional turkeys were donated. So many turkeys, in so little time, and not enough freezer space steered the Missoula Food Bank to MFBN for some storage help. The Montana Food Bank Network was happy to be able to provide additional freezer space for this mass influx of turkeys. The event turned out to be a great success. With the help of this program and the support of the Missoula community 5,000 individuals were able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. The remainder of the turkeys currently being stored here at MFBN will be distributed by the Missoula Food Bank to their clients and other Missoula agencies. We can only hope that all of your communities show the same generosity as Missoula and its surrounding neighbors during this holiday season!

The Montana Food Bank Network would like to welcome three new Partner Agencies! In the last month Alternative Youth Adventures, Set Free Ministries, and Camas Hot Springs Senior Community Center have become active agencies in the Network.

Alternative Youth Adventures in Boulder has four residential youth programs and is the third branch of Youth Dynamics, Inc. to join the Network. Set Free Ministries, located in Hardin, has been lent a hand by Helping Hands in Hardin to learn about running a food pantry and to get their operation up and running. They, in turn, will lend a hand in responding to the increasing need in their community by providing another valuable outlet for households to receive emergency food. Hot Springs Seniors have rejoined the network after an almost two-year hiatus and provide tasty hot meals and socialization time for area seniors as well as helping coordinate senior services.

We are excited to have these three Partner Agencies on board and helping to further extend our network to reach more and more hungry Montanans in need of assistance. Please join MFBN in welcoming these new agencies!

Welcome, Three New Partner Agencies!

Montana Food Bank Network Partner Agency News December 2011 5

Feeding America Focuses on Policy

Feeding America, our national food bank and MFBN’s parent organization, is focusing more and more on policy advocacy. Feeding America recognizes that public nutrition programs play a significant role in reducing hunger and relieving the strain on emergency food programs—and food banks have an important role to play in supporting public nutrition programs. Public nutrition programs include TEFAP, CSFP, SNAP, WIC, School Nutrition, Summer Food, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP- which provides food at day cares and afterschool programs). If there are cuts to these programs, food banks will not be able to meet the increased need—and more families will experience hunger.

Feeding America has developed a Policy Advocacy and Engagement Committee (PEAC) made up of 25 food bank representatives from across the country. Montana Food Bank Network is honored to serve on this national committee. The committee’s role is to advise Feeding America on policy positions and to engage other food banks in policy advocacy. We hope to also engage our network of emergency food providers in advocacy for these programs in the coming months.

Policy Department Welcomes Diane Matthews! The Montana Food Bank Network recognizes the critical role of public nutrition programs in ending

hunger in Montana. Without programs such as SNAP, WIC, Free and Reduced Price School Meals, and the Summer Food program, the emergency food system would not be able to meet the need for food and many more families would experience hunger. Unfortunately many public nutrition programs are underutilized across our state. A number of barriers exist including lack of knowledge, misconceptions about the program, and feeling overwhelmed by the application process. Increasing participation in these programs is a critical step to ending hunger in Montana and one in which emergency food providers can play a significant role.

In an effort to further engage Partner Agencies in policy advocacy and outreach, MFBN has expanded the duties of Agency Relations Assistant, Diane Matthews. Diane will now be serving as a resource for agencies to learn more about these public programs and their connection to emergency food. Expect to hear from Diane about more than just Monthly Activity Reports and Food Recalls! MFBN looks forward

to having Diane fill this valuable role as we continue the fight against hunger in the state of Montana! If you would like more information about any of the public nutrition programs or how to incorporate more outreach into the services your agency provides, contact Diane at 721-3825 x222 or [email protected].

Fourth Annual Gala A SuccessThe fourth annual “A Chef ’s Affair” gala, a fundraiser for the

Montana Food Bank Network, was held on November 12, 2011 at the Florence Building in downtown Missoula. The evening was a great success. We raised $54,613.08 including in-kind donations, and netted $37,038.86! We’d like to thank all of our donors and sponsors for making this year’s event possible.

For every dollar donated, MFBN can leverage enough food for 8 emergency meals. The money raised from this year’s “A Chef ’s Affair” will provide enough food for 296,310 meals!

We enjoyed culinary creations from Missoula’s finest chefs, including Abe Risho from the Silk Road, Christine Littig from Bernice’s Bakery, Andrew Martin from Café Dolce, Dominic Glenna from Bravo Catering, Seth Bostick from Thomas Cuisine, Beth Higgins from Two Sisters Catering and Erin Crobar from Finn and Porter. Special guests included musician, Rob Quist and news anchor, Heidi Meili! Proceeds will help provide food to local pantries across Montana.
