St. Joseph’s News

December 2011

Principal’s Message:

It is hard to believe that we are in Ad-

vent season already. Two more weeks

before Christmas break. We will be hav-

ing our Christmas mass as St. Joseph’s

parish on Friday December 16th at

10:00 am followed by turkey dinner at

the school and air band competition in

the afternoon. When students return af-

ter the holidays they will be finishing up

units and modules and preparing for fi-

nal exams.

Advent is the perfect time to clear and

prepare the Way. Advent is a winter

training camp for those who desire

peace. By reflection and prayer, by read-

ing and meditation, we can make our

hearts a place where a blessing of peace

would desire to abide and where the

birth of the Prince of Peace might take

place.

May this advent season be a time for

bringing hope, transformation and ful-

fillment into the Advent of our lives.

Yours in Christ,

Mike Matheson

The Generosity of the Sower

The Sower’s greatest gift to each of us, especially made

manifest at Christmas, is indeed the very gift of his own

self. In Luke’s Gospel 2:1-14, the child of Mary and Jo-

seph, born in the manger gives birth to the one who

would ultimately offer the greatest gift and sacrifice of

all, his own life so that others might have eternal life..

What a incredible example and image of self-lessness the

Sower gives to us, one who is willing to give up every-

thing he has so that the seeds that he scatters may be giv-

en the best possible chance to take root and grow, bear-

ing a multitude of seeds one day themselves.

May this Advent season be a time when we truly appre-

ciate the opportunity we have to generously share our

gifts with of each of the students, the staff, the parents

and all those around us, just as the Sower has for each

one us. Let us pray that the Bethlehem we strive build

will also bring those we meet, encourage, love and for-

give to eternal life as well.

The District Band Christmas Concert will be held on Wednesday

December 7 at St Joseph Catholic High School at 7:00pm. Fea-tured will be the bands from grade 5-12

and the Jazz Band and there will also be a silent auction and cookies and hot

chocolate on hand.

STUDENT / PARENT

INFORMATION

We have recently changed our student infor-

mation system and in doing so have discovered

that we need to update and correct some of the

data. For instance, some home and cell phone

numbers may have changed or you may have

moved. Essentially, we just need to double check

our data. In order to allow us to communicate

most effectively, please phone the school 532—

7779 ext 112, send an e-mail to dawnmar-

[email protected] or send on paper with your child

with all updated information. Mother, Father,

guardian, mailing address, legal address (street

number or legal land description). Home phone

number, work phone numbers, cell phone num-

bers, and importantly email addresses. We would

also like at least one emergency contact person

but if you have more than one that’s great too.

We require their name, relation to the

child/children and contact phone numbers—

home, work, cell.

Thank you in advance for you help and infor-

mation, it will be kept secure and confidential.

Prayer for Christmas

Morning

The day of joy returns, Fa-

ther in Heaven, and crowns

another year with peace

and good will. Help us

rightly to remember the

birth of Jesus, that we may

share in the song of the an-

gels, the gladness of the

shepherds, and the worship

of the wise men.

Close the doors of hate and

open the doors of love all

over the world…

Let kindness come with

every gift and good desires

with every greeting. Deliver

us from evil, by the blessing

that Christ brings, and

teach us to be merry with

clean

hearts. May the Christmas

morning make us happy to

be thy children, And the

Christmas evening bring us

to our bed with grateful

thoughts, forgiving and for-

given, for Jesus’ sake.

Amen

Congratulations to the Sr. Ceinah's basketball players of 2011-2012. We

look forward to a competitive and suc-cessful season.

St. Joseph Catholic High School is busy raising

money and finding donations to help support our

students and families within our community.

The students brought food donations and at-

tended a dance on Thursday, November

24th. Proceeds and food donations will

support two families from the Catholic

Family Service Food Hamper Program.

The grad students raised money and food do-

nations from the grad fashion show. A

portion of this money will support a family

from Odyssey House.

Religion classes and STRIVE classes have

many projects that will help others out at

Christmas.

The Social Justice Group is running Penny

Wars. Grade-alike students add pennies

to big water jugs. This money counts to-

wards the grade’s total. If another grade

adds silver coins or bills, this money goes

against the total. The grade with the most

money will win a prize. The money will be

donated to . . Our Christmas Fanilies!

Our sock, toque, mitt tree will be put up again

this year. We are hoping to add travel size

toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap . .

. to donate to Sunrise House (Grande Prai-

rie Youth Emergency Shelter Society)

A HUGE thank you

to Adam Lockhart

for being the DJ at

our school dance! It

wouldn't have been

possible without

you!

The St Joes Senior Ceinah volleyball team had an amazing

season in 2011. For the first time ever they won the GPRC Big

Red Tournament, they also earned Gold at, Pow Wow, Cam-

rose and Zones Tournaments all in the same year. They went

on to finish 4th at Provincials, losing in 3 sets to the eventual

Provincial Champions. A big thank you to all of the athletes,

parents, coaches, and supporters for such a memorable season.

Football players from St. Joe’s supported their brother, Colby Smith by shaving their heads Thursday, November 23rd. Colby Smith is in the fight for his life trying to triumph over cancer. The foot-ball players went into the community and donated over $3000 to the Colby Smith 81 Trust Fund

High school Redesign News

As many of you know we are now in the third rotation of our high school focus Fri-

day occurring this December 9th . We have started to place our catalogue of semi-

nars on the school website so that parents can help students make choices that help

each student in their academic endeavors here at St. Joseph Catholic High school .

We ask parents to remind their children that Focus Fridays are mandatory attend-

ance days.

Strive continues to develop over the course of the year and teacher advisors are in-

creasingly helping students with their academic questions along with helping stu-

dents and parents access needed interventions . Please as parents make use of your

child’s STRIVE advisor.

Finally as a staff we are finding that many of our seminars that involve community

members presenting to students have been very successful. We would love to access

the vast expertise of our parent community, if you feel that you might have anything

to offer our students please contact Mr. Matheson at our office 780-532-7779.
