As another year ends, it is
tempting to borrow the mantle
of the ancient Roman god
Janus, who gave his name to
the month of January. In pictures and statues, you will
normally find him portrayed as
twin-headed, reflecting his ability
to look both to the past and the
future.
During 2012, there has been
much to celebrate in the life of the
Central Hall; it’s certainly been a
year of moving forward.
We successfully launched our
own in-house box office, introduced our first professionally produced
programme brochure and forged
strong new partnerships with the
local business community.
The theme of celebration was
also evident in our range of
concerts, in March our own
diamond jubilee, marking the
Central Hall’s 75th anniversary,
reached its climax with a gala
concert.
The following month, Grimsby Philharmonic Society combined
celebrations of their 160th
anniversary with that of the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This
concert of regal music was notable
for the inclusion of Grimsby Psalter,
a world premiere charting our
town’s history.
Music of a different kind gave us
our largest audience of the year; in
October The Mersey Beatles rocked the Central Hall on the 50th
anniversary of The Beatles UK
chart debut.
There were many other musical
highlights during the year reflecting
the great diversity of what is on
offer at the Central Hall; thus
fulfilling our mission to be the
home of real music.
We are committed to broadening
our range of entertainment and
hope you will find some of next year’s highlights, on page 3,
enticing.
Very shortly, we will be unveiling
a brand new website and, as soon
as possible in 2013, we aim to
introduce on-line booking to
compliment our existing box office
facilities.
It is easy to forget that the
Central Hall is not a business but a
non-profit making charity and without your support, it would be
impossible to keep this building
alive.
On behalf of the trustees,
management, staff and volunteers,
we thank you for that support and
wish you a very merry Christmas.
DECEMBER 2012
That Was The Year That Was
It all started, not with a kiss but an idea. We thought, wouldn’t it be helpful if at the end of a concert you could simply pick up a telephone and summon a taxi to take you home. So we spoke to our friends at Links Taxis and they said, ‘happy to help, we’ll pay for a freephone to be installed in your foyer.” They duly contacted BT and after a couple of aborted visits, several months and numerous conversations, BT has finally installed our telephone. So now, it’s good to talk, as Bob Hoskins used to tell us in those BT TV ads of the 90’s … especially if you want a taxi!
Can You Help? If you are someone who
believes in maintaining an
iconic concert venue that
offers a wide range of
entertainment and is run on a
not for profit basis by local
people for the benefit of our
community, then you are our
ideal volunteer. Could you spare a few hours a
month to help with a wide range
of interesting and satisfying
activities that are fun and offer
the opportunity to make new
friends?
We are always looking for people
to help in our box office, behind
the bar or coffee station and
showing guests to their seats.
Perhaps you could help
distribute our publicity material or
maybe even assist in its design. Do you have DIY skills that we
could call on for routine
maintenance?
As a registered charity, our
small army of volunteers are an
integral part of our success and
crucial to our on-going survival.
Can you help us? If you want to
volunteer or simply find out more information, please contact
Kimberley Spauls, our Box Office
and Marketing Manager, by calling
01472 355 025.
Merry Xmas
Everybody! It’ssssssss Christmasssssss!
The final refrain bellowed by
Slade’s Noddy Holder at the end of
a song, which, for many people,
has become an anthem at this time of the year.
If you like wall to wall
Christmas music then go on-line
to Radio Santa Claus - yes, it does
exist and, what’s more, it
broadcasts from the Arctic Circle.
Oh, and as of today (Dec 1st) Santa Claus TV should go live.
Also, don’t forget that, thanks to
North Amer ican Aerospace
Defense Command (NORAD), you
can track Santa’s movements as
he leaves the North Pole to deliver
presents to children around the
world on Christmas Eve.
This official agency of the United States government has provided
this important service since 1955!
Finally, don’t forget to check
Royal Mail’s last recommended
posting date for the North Pole.
You do want to make sure that
Santa brings you that extra
special present - don’t you?

Dorothy Dean Memorial Concert
17th January 2013
It was during her time as Head of Wintringham Grammar School from 1953 to 1975 that Dorothy Dean’s love of music prompted her
to co-found with Ronald Gill in 1959 the Wintringham Society of Arts, now Grimsby Concert Society. For 52 years from its formation, Dorothy was devoted to the Society,
serving it continuously in various official capacities to the end of her life.
For many years, she employed her fine judgement, attention to detail,
eloquence and amazing memory as she arranged high-quality concerts and
recitals and conducted the affairs of the Society.
She laid great emphasis on encouraging and supporting young musicians
about to embark on a musical career. Dorothy brought to Grimsby a host
of nationally and internationally well-known artists, including Dame Janet
Baker, The Amadeus Trio, Peter Donohoe, Raphael Wallfisch and Tasmin
Little.
For three major reasons it is appropriate that this Memorial Concert
should be performed by the distinguished Coull Quartet and one of her ex-
pupils, the international concert pianist Richard Markham. Firstly, the Coull
Quartet was greatly admired by Dorothy and had been engaged by her
previously. Secondly, Dorothy encouraged and supported Richard in his
early years and subsequently appeared for the Society on several
occasions and they developed a lasting friendship. Thirdly, the Coull
Quartet and Richard notably combined in a concert that Dorothy arranged
in 1984 when they played Elgar’s Piano Quintet in E minor.
The evening’s programme will feature: Beethoven: String Quartet in F, Op. 18, No. 1. Mendelssohn: String
Quartet in E flat, Op. 12. Brahms: Intermezzi, Op. 118, No. 1 in A minor and No. 2 in A major and Schumann Piano
Quintet in E flat, Op. 44.
The memorial concert will take place in the Main Hall on Thursday 17th January 2013, commencing at 7.30pm.
Tickets, priced £12.50, now available from the Central Hall box office.
Christmas Myths We all know how easy it is for myths to begin and then, before you know it, cited as fact. Health & Safety often seems to dominate modern life and who amongst us hasn’t exclaimed, “that’s ridiculous!” when the dreaded ‘H&S’ is given as a reason for not doing something? Yet, is it red tape, a myth or just false reporting in newspapers? Visit the Health and Safety Executive’s website, the independent regulator, and you will discover an amusing myth
busting section. There is even a page dedicated to Christmas, so in the spirit of the festive season, let’s help dismiss some of these old chestnuts:
1. Children being banned from having snowball fights 2. Office workers told they can't put decorations up 3. Panto performers ordered not to throw sweets into the audience 4. Being sued for clearing snow from outside your business or home 5. Preventing people from putting coins in traditional Christmas puddings 6. Seats being removed from shops – despite weary Christmas shoppers wanting to rest their feet 7. Traditional shopping centre Christmas trees being scaled back or replaced by artificial alternatives 8. Christmas lights needing electrical (portable appliance testing) PAT tests every year 9. Santa being ordered to buckle up on his sleigh
10. Carol singers being classed as a health and safety risk
Just to emphasise, all the above are myths!
