Dorothy Dean Memorial Concert

17th January 2013

It was during her time as Head of Wintringham Grammar School from 1953 to 1975 that Dorothy Dean’s love of music prompted her

to co-found with Ronald Gill in 1959 the Wintringham Society of Arts, now Grimsby Concert Society. For 52 years from its formation, Dorothy was devoted to the Society,

serving it continuously in various official capacities to the end of her life.

For many years, she employed her fine judgement, attention to detail,

eloquence and amazing memory as she arranged high-quality concerts and

recitals and conducted the affairs of the Society.

She laid great emphasis on encouraging and supporting young musicians

about to embark on a musical career. Dorothy brought to Grimsby a host

of nationally and internationally well-known artists, including Dame Janet

Baker, The Amadeus Trio, Peter Donohoe, Raphael Wallfisch and Tasmin

Little.

For three major reasons it is appropriate that this Memorial Concert

should be performed by the distinguished Coull Quartet and one of her ex-

pupils, the international concert pianist Richard Markham. Firstly, the Coull

Quartet was greatly admired by Dorothy and had been engaged by her

previously. Secondly, Dorothy encouraged and supported Richard in his

early years and subsequently appeared for the Society on several

occasions and they developed a lasting friendship. Thirdly, the Coull

Quartet and Richard notably combined in a concert that Dorothy arranged

in 1984 when they played Elgar’s Piano Quintet in E minor.

The evening’s programme will feature: Beethoven: String Quartet in F, Op. 18, No. 1. Mendelssohn: String

Quartet in E flat, Op. 12. Brahms: Intermezzi, Op. 118, No. 1 in A minor and No. 2 in A major and Schumann Piano

Quintet in E flat, Op. 44.

The memorial concert will take place in the Main Hall on Thursday 17th January 2013, commencing at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced £12.50, now available from the Central Hall box office.

Christmas Myths We all know how easy it is for myths to begin and then, before you know it, cited as fact. Health & Safety often seems to dominate modern life and who amongst us hasn’t exclaimed, “that’s ridiculous!” when the dreaded ‘H&S’ is given as a reason for not doing something? Yet, is it red tape, a myth or just false reporting in newspapers? Visit the Health and Safety Executive’s website, the independent regulator, and you will discover an amusing myth

busting section. There is even a page dedicated to Christmas, so in the spirit of the festive season, let’s help dismiss some of these old chestnuts:

1. Children being banned from having snowball fights 2. Office workers told they can't put decorations up 3. Panto performers ordered not to throw sweets into the audience 4. Being sued for clearing snow from outside your business or home 5. Preventing people from putting coins in traditional Christmas puddings 6. Seats being removed from shops – despite weary Christmas shoppers wanting to rest their feet 7. Traditional shopping centre Christmas trees being scaled back or replaced by artificial alternatives 8. Christmas lights needing electrical (portable appliance testing) PAT tests every year 9. Santa being ordered to buckle up on his sleigh

10. Carol singers being classed as a health and safety risk

Just to emphasise, all the above are myths!
