Commodore’s Message“Have you got a minute?”

Congratulations are in order to Fred & Holly Lawrence on their recent purchase of a J/80. Rumors abound that RYC will also have some J/70’s on our racecourse next summer. So I also congratulate Ken & Lynn Smith for being the first ones in on this lively racing sailboat.

As this is my last Commodore letter to our membership, I want to use this forum to thank some special friends that have gone way above and beyond in their service to Rochester Yacht Club. As I began to compile my list it became obvious to me that I would have to limit my recognition to only a few really special people.

• Bud Webb has not only been serving as our Facilities Committee Chair and knows just about everything there is to know about RYC, but has been one of our Principal Race Officers for many years, in addition to being a long time instructor in our Adult Sail Program. My sincere “thank you” for all that you do for us at Rochester Yacht Club.

• Peggy Fess has served several years as House & Entertainment Chair and is currently serving as a Direc-tor. Thank you Peggy for your creativity and steady leadership.

• Pat Basset has served as our Yacht & Harbor Committee Chair and also as a Director. Pat is one of the most resourceful, generous and helpful people that I know. Thank you Pat for all that you have done for RYC and our members.

• Eric Voss has done a superb job as our Racing Fleet Captain. His organization skills and his creativity in producing the Cups ‘n Flags Award Presentation are truly amazing and very appreciated. Thank you for your service to RYC and your get-it-done work ethic.

• Brook Richardson for several years has very graciously taken on the responsibility of calling our mem-bers about scheduling their annual launching and haul-out. It requires a great deal of persistence and patience (and a fairly thick hide too). So I thank you Brook for doing this difficult task and making it look easy.

My list goes on and on with members who have given generously of their time and talents in tribute to our wonderful Club. You all know who you are, and so I thank you for helping to make my term as Commodore a fun and memorable experience.

As I gaze into my crystal ball, I see good things in our future. Our Club will be debt free in April of 2014. This comes at a good time, because many Clubs are struggling to manage their debt in this prolonged recession. I see us continuing to do battle with attrition, but enjoying modest growth in membership. I have great confidence in the leadership skills of Commodore Tom Kankoski, Vice Commodore Barbara Hufsmith and Rear Commodore Dan Peck. They all bring excellent resumes and strong personal commitments to leading our Club into the future.

I look forward to serving in an advisory role, as Past Commodores have done before me. Which leads me to my last thank you… to Past Commodores Fred Karshick, Skip Shumway and Charlie Ross and my wife Susanne for their mentoring, guidance and support.

Fair winds, Keith Burhans, ALMOST a Past Commodore

RYC Board of Directors Meeting Highlights-November 15, 2012Commodore Burhans called the meeting to order at 1903 hours.

Treasurer Joe Altobelli reported on finances for the month. As a result of spending on some necessary major capital projects there was a reduction of our year-to-date surplus, but we remain in excellent financial shape with just one month remaining in our fiscal year.

Club Manager Mary Smith reported on the many recent and upcoming club events. There was an enthusiastic turnout for cups and flags. Women’s racing has added new energy to our racing programs. There were 14 polite and proper participants in the etiquette class. The kitchen project is in the preparation stages and will be begins during January shutdown. Mary announced that some technology changes have resulted in colder beer being served at the bar. If you are one of those members looking for cold beer and warm friendships, please stop at the bar. There are also some new menu antidotes to fight off winter blues. A hot “home-cooked comfort food” special is available every evening and will perfectly complement the cold beer. See details elsewhere in the “Log” for notable events to come, including the Holiday Ball.

Betsy Lawless, Chair of the Membership Committee reported that the following individuals were elected as members of the Rochester Yacht Club: Jody Hansen-Walker (Associate) Adam Green (Student)

The Board approved the following membership status changes: To Resident: Jeremy Schiele (from Associate 11/11) To Ancient Mariner: Robert Bryant (from Resident 05/79) William Watson (from Resident 05/66) To Resignation: Scott Hurwitz (Resident 06/11) Robert Moore (Resident 05/00) Jay Shayevitz (Resident 06/10) Charles Pellegrini (Leave of Absence 11/10) Wilma Darling (Surviving Spouse 04/07)

Past Commodore Ross, chair of the Nominating Committee, announced the proposed slate of board candidates for next term as follows: Rear Commodore Daniel Peck Secretary Bryan Clutz Corresponding Secretary William Delaney Director Patrick Leva Director Kevin Moran

Director Joe Oster

Sarah Hannon reported on Junior Sail Programs. Coach, Jim Carminati has done a fine job and will resume the program in March. Six RYC junior sailors competed at Christ Church and finished very respectably.

Chris Dorsey was not present but submitted a list of necessary repairs for the Keelboat Fleet to prepare for next season.

The Regatta Committee will have a complete list of scheduled regattas very soon. Skip Shumway informed the board that 30-35 boats are expected for the 2013 Sonar North American Championship. Vice Commodore Kankoski commended the Trophy Committee for their shining service in preparation for Cups and Flags.

Holly Calderon has agreed to serve as the new committee chairperson for the Women’s Racing Association.

Entertainment and House chair, Peg Fess reported on the holiday ball and decorating schedule for the holidays. Look for details in the “Log”.

Bud Webb submitted the Facilities Committee’s written report on the kitchen project. He gave verbal highlights. New equipment will be delivered before the end of this fiscal year. Contractors bids are due by December 11 and the project will be awarded within a few days of bid receipt. Construction will start on January 2 and finish by February 20. Fred Karshick has agreed to be the project coordinator. Bob Kwit, chair of the Tennis committee, summed up the season. Pickle-ball has become more popular and can be played by a wider range of social athletes who often enjoy dinner after a game. He suggested that there is an opportunity to get more members interested and engage new people. Inter club tournaments were suggested. It is possible that RYC could stripe the second court for pickle-ball. Suggestions will be incorporated into a plan over the winter.

Treasurer Joe Altobelli reviewed the proposed 2013 budget. The club continues to focus on fiscal restraint and paying down current debt. The only major 2013 project is the kitchen renovation. Commodore Burhans mentioned dredging that must occur when the equipment is on the river in spring after the swing bridge demolition, which is the only other large capital project of high priority. After brief discussion the board voted to approve the budget as proposed.

Steve Wilde thanked the 12 volunteers plus yard crew who hauled the 420s and Opti floors. The task was accomplished in a half days’ work with all the help. Thanks to the flag officers for participating.

Meeting was adjourned at 1944 hours.Respectfully submitted,

Cheryl LawlessRecording Secretary

From the Manager’s OfficeDear Members,

The Holiday Season is upon us once again!

The club has been beautifully decorated by many of Santa’s helpers, and a feel of festivities is in the air as we await Santa’s arrival on December 8th. Santa brings a special gift for each of our little ones. To make a reservation for your family, call Linda at 342-5511 ext 10. We need your child or grandchild’s name and age. Santa arrives at 10:00 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 10:00 until 12:30. Enjoy a Christmas sing-a-long with Fred DiCesare playing keyboard before and after breakfast.

RYCWA is getting together for a Festive Holiday luncheon Wednesday, December 12. Come and join in a relaxing day at the club with friends. Enjoy a

meal and good conversation with other ladies of the club. Cocktails begin at 11:30 a.m.

All of our Committee reports will be highlighted at our Annual Board Meeting, Thursday, December 13. It is also the time when we welcome in the new officers of the Club. The open session begins at 6:00 P.M. with a Prime Rib buffet to follow. All members are encouraged to be part of this yearly event and be involved in what’s happening at the club.

Tables are filling for the Holiday Ball on December 15th and this is one of our finest events of the year. You can make your reservation on-line. Please note the menu has changed slightly from past years. We are offering three entrée choices. Be sure to click in the comment box to let us know your selection. The evening’s festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a magnificent dinner prepared by Chef George and his culinary team. The well known band “Me and the Boyz” will provide incredible dance music from 8:00 until midnight. Plan on an evening filled with fun and friends.

A special Family Breakfast Buffet is planned for Sunday, December 23 from 9:00 until 1:00. As we get closer to Christmas Day our schedules seem to fill quickly. Make life a little less stressful and bring your family and guests to the club. Save yourself the cooking and washing of dishes!

Monday, December 31, we will be open for New Year’s Eve Dinner service from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Come and celebrate the New Year early by having dinner at the club with family and friends. Listen, dance or sing to a variety of lively music from 6:30 – 10:00 p.m.

All members are welcome to attend our Annual New Year’s Day reception. This is a member’s only event for you and your family to enjoy. It is the clubs way to say “Thank You” for your patronage throughout the year. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet up with old friends and meet new ones too! We encourage all members to stop by between the hours of 3:30 and 6:00 P.M. for a glass of punch, a bite to eat and lots of hugs and handshakes!

From the Manager’s Office

Our annual club shut down will begin on January 2 and we will re-open on Thursday, January 17th. The club plans to do some improvements to the upstairs kitchen during our down time this year. The project will include installing a much needed upgraded dishwasher and the replacement of our fifty year old floor with new tiles. As the project gets underway, we will have limited access to the kitchen and walk-in cooler. Due to the project, the Chef will temporarily lose access to the kitchen sinks and prep area. During that time a limited menu will be offered. The bar will open for business as usual and will not be affected by the project. A listing of other clubs that offer reciprocal dining during our shutdown can be found on our website and in the January log. Enjoy your holiday magical moments at the Club with this delicious red blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carnignan, with splashes of Mourvedre, Merlot, Alicante, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaine du Pegau, near Chateauneuf du Pape. It

showcases loads of plumy black fruits, earth, and herbs that are framed by a medium bodied soft lush palate. It has loads of upfront cherry and a peppery finish. Pairs nicely with RYC Menu items: Medallions of South Texas Antelope, Breast of Duck, Braised Pork Shank, Grilled Loin Lamb Chops,

“Anchor at the Club”By Sarah HannonAs the radio stations make the switch to 24/7 Holiday music, I think it is safe to say Happy Holidays!

As it is the most wonderful time of the year, the club has fallen into the holiday spirit beautifully, so be sure to take a tour of our decorated clubhouse soon! Consider stopping by on Sunday for the Holiday Brunch. Our winter wonderland will be making way for Santa on December 8th. The holiday cheer will continue on through the month with our Holiday Ball and Family Breakfast.

Winter Wednesdays this month will open up opportunities to learn something new and to enjoy past times as well. On December 5th we will have a card game night, come on down for a round of hearts or learn a new game- families welcome! Get up and move on December 12th, we will have a Zumba instructor

here to teach the basics for beginners. Zumba is a fun for all ages dance party that counts as exercise. The cold weather might have just arrived, but reminisce the joys of cruising on December 19th, Ed Garner and Mike McCourt will be presenting on their most recent trip this past year to the Caribbean. Following the presentation we will have an information session about our own Bareboat Cruising Certification course for this upcoming spring. Learn the ropes of cruising, earn both your Basic and Bareboat Cruising Certifications from US Sailing, and enjoy a trip somewhere a little warmer for a week. When Christmas arrives, so do new toys and electronics! RYC will host an application ‘show and tell’. For those new tablets, iPads, smart phones, iPhones, learn the best applications to download. For those seasoned users, come on down and share your favorite applications for sailing or life or enjoyment.

Whatever you enjoy, this month you’ll find an activity or many activities to keep you anchored at the club. The holidays can be hectic, but remember to spend some time among friends and family at the club. Don’t forget us during the shutdown in January; we will be hosting a club night out! On January 11th spend this Friday night with us for dinner at Dinosaur BBQ and an Amerks Hockey Game.

Best wishes,

Sarah J. HannonEducation & Events Director
