8-bit historyWe Remember...Pipe DreamBy: Lucasfilm GamesRelease date: 1989

Using a variety of pipe pieces presented ran-

domly in a queue, the player must construct a

path from the start piece for the onrushing sew-

er slime, or "flooz" (the 1991 Windows version's

help files refer to it as goo), which begins flowing

after a time delay from the start of the round. The

player can keep clicking the same square to

change the pipe pieces. The flooz is required to

pass through a given number of pipe pieces in

order for the player to pass to the next round.

Some rounds also include an end piece, which

must be the end of the pipeline the player has

constructed, in addition to fulfilling the mini-

mum pipe length requirement.

Think You got the chops?

War Horse, the astounding theatrical

experience, will run at the Des

Moines Civic Center from December

11th through the 16th.

The show will have you glued to

your seat from the first moment as

Joey, the title character, first trots on

stage as a foal, petted by his owner

and best friend, 15 year old Albert.

While Joey is a puppet, not a real

horse; the way he shudders and

whinnies at Albert’s loving touch,

along with his lifelike eyes, shining

and reflective, you are drawn into the

soul of his journey.

Set during the First World War, War

Horse combines a powerful story

with thrilling stagecraft and music.

In addition, it showcases what may

be the most inventive use of puppetry

ever seen on stage. Soon after meet-

ing him as a young horse, the audi-

ence will be amazed as an adult Joey,

seven feet tall, materializes on stage.

It is this kind of emotional power that

has made War Horse an international

phenomenon, sweeping up audiences

and awards on both sides of the At-

lantic and even inspiring an Oscar-

nominated film, directed by Steven

Spielberg.

During World War I, more than one

million horses were conscripted by

the British military alone, of these,

only 62,000 returned. As Joey is

forced into battle, serving in both the

British and German armies, you will

be moved by his bravery and the trust

he places in those that exploit his

strength. His innocence makes him

seem above the fighting, in War

Horse, animlas behave with a dignity

that humans do not always achieve.

The story continues as Joey encoun-

ters many scary circumstances, and

Albert is searching for him. His

plight resonates with anyone who has

ever loved an animal or taken a pet

into the family.

Will Albert find Joey in time? As War

Horse reaches its beautiful climax,

the hopes of parents, children and

beloved friends both onstage and off-

merge into a shared experience, as

tissues are drawn from pockets and

eyes glisten with tears.
