Prepress is the term used in the printing and publishing industries for the processes andprocedures that occur between the creation of a print layout and the final printing. Theprepress procedure includes the manufacture of a printing plate, image carrier or form, ready for mounting on a printing press, as well as the adjustment of images and texts or thecreation of a high-quality print file. In today's prepress shop, the form of delivery from thecustomer is usually electronic, either a PDF or application files created from such programsas Scribus, Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress.

Computer to Plate Printing – Pad Printing Future: The concept of computer to plateprinting (CTP) is not new in the printing industry and is now used on a daily basis in theoffset and flexography industries. The screen printing marketplace also has seensubstantial growth in the use of direct-to-screen systems; however, in the pad printingarena, the concept and equipment for computer to plate printing are now not very new(although are coming on extremely strong). With recent machine developments andimprovements, laser plate engraving systems are beginning to take a significant hold in thisarea, and the market appears to be ready for a total conversion over the next couple ofyears. Computer to plate printing systems, as they apply to pad printing, enable the user totake a digital graphic file and by means of a laser, make high quality steel and polymer padprinting plates (clichés) designed to be laser engraved without the use of film, exposuresystems, or chemicals. Advancements to the process, increased efficiency, direct costsavings, and superior imprint quality have produced such dramatic improvements over otherexisting technologies that those who have seen the results become instant converts.

Ongoing discussion in the trade press suggests that the question of computer-to-plate(CTP) imaging method, primarily thermal vs. violet light, is still a contentious issue. Printersconsidering the upgrade to digital plate imaging processes are presented with manyreasonable-sounding claims that are often contradictory. However, in 1994, Creo orHeidelberg Creo now Kodak introduced an alternative – the first truly viable thermal infra-red imaging CTP system. The market response was immediate and thermal technologyquickly out-paced visible light CTP sales. The greater market share of thermal CTPcontinues to hold today for some very basic and practical reasons.

There is very good potential for pre-press market in Pakistan as it is rapidly growing tonarrow the gap between obsolete technology to latest developments in the field with specialreference to computer-to-plate (CtP and CtcP). Kodak’s share in both equipment andconsumable is higher than others in the market. Kodak in the recent years has done goodbusiness in all sectors of CTPs. Beside this Fuji, Screen, Lucher, e-beysis and someChinese brands are also doing good business. Also there are refurbished machine of Creo,Heidelberg Crew and Superasetter are also in the markt. Beside thermal, violel andconventional plate technologies are in the market with huge investments. The tendency ofCTcPs are also being developed in the Pakistan market. The work on InkJet CTPs are notyet introduced but work is in progress. Kodak has also marketed Flexo CTPs in the country.Manufacturing of conventional PS printing Plate is already done in Pakistan whileinvestment in Thermal Plate Production unit is also in progress.

Production of consumables for pre-press and press-room chemicals such as FountainSolution, Plate Cleaners, Plate Gum Solutions, CTP and PS Plate Developer and ImageRemovers has already begun in Pakistan.. In this regard, this year two Pakistani companieswere participated in International Fairs. Global Inks & Chemicals (Pvt.) Limited has participatedin Gulf Print & Pack 2013 which was held in Dubai from 8-11 April. Also Spring Inks &Chemicals participated in China Print 2013 which was held in Beijing from 14-18 May. Theyshowcased their printing inks, pre-press, consumable and press-room chemicals. Beside themanufacturing of pre-press and press-rooms consumables and chemicals, Pakistan is alsoimports quite a handsome quantity of these products from China, Far Eastern countries andEuropean Union Countries to meet the local demand. Along with Kodak, Fuji, Ipagsa, PNE,Huaguang, TOP in Offset technology while Flint, DuPont, Sun, Toyobo and Chinese brands inFlexo setup. The trend for Flexo CtPs are also paving its way into the market and hugeinvestments have been made where the major share is of KODAK while there are conventionalprofessing of Flexo also in the market to met the local demand. The processors are also wellmarketed here Glunz & Jensen and also from Malaysia and China being used in the industry.World class proofing system and printers are also being used for quality work.

Pakistan is also self sufficient in cylinder making for gravure technology. A Chinese jointventure is successfully running while local manufacturers are also in row with latestEuropean equipments. We are also shifting to day old system of graphic arts with mostmodern software like latest version of Adboe, InDesign, QuarkExpress, etc.

Pakistan is very rapidly switching over on the latest pre-press technology and there isgood scope for growth in this specific field.

The Union of Small and

Export Development

Surcharge (EDS) funds to

impart education to the small

improve their printing and

packaging to compete in

global markets.

UNISAME President

Zulfikar Thaver said one of

the reasons the SME units are

to poor packing. The super

products with attractive

The Pakistani exporters

FYOTEC - A NEW NAME IN SECURITY TECHNOLOGY

Innovation continues to drive the global print and ink market as

end-users strive to sate insatiable appetites for added value

products that will give them any competitive edge in tough

sectors where margins are tight and demand is high. Dr Glenn

Wood of Wood & Associates looks at the latest developments in

pigment technology emanating from China.

The US and China are home to the only two manufacturers of

optically variable pigments worldwide - JDSU in the USA and

FYOTEC in China. The pigment products from JDSU and the

corresponding ink formulations from Sicpa are well known but

perhaps less well known are the features and benefits of the

products coming out of the emerging powerhouse that is China.

So, the rebranding of the FYOTEC manufacturing company

based in the ancient historical city of Huizhou, near Guangdong,

China, has created a useful opportunity to review the company, its

products, markets and approach to the security ink business.

The Optical Technology Company Ltd was founded in 1996 as

a subsidiary division of For You Group Co Ltd and now employs

more than 30,000 staff of whom more than 1,000 are employed in

research and development. Now boosting revenues in excess of

RMB 11 billion (USD 1.75 billion), such has been the company’s

success in developing and bringing new products to the market in

the last 15 years that it is listed as one of the Fortune 500

companies of China.

Now, the firm is looking to the future as it plans an expansion

programme fueled by investment in an infrastructure plan that’s

already seen the advent of a new 25,000 sq m state-of-the-art

pigment and ink manufacturing facility (phase 11) completed in

2012, which has a registered capital of US$2 million and employs

almost 400 staff including 32 working in the R&D team.

Furthermore, the new trademark ‘FYOTEC’ was authorised

earlier this year to coincide with the launch of a new range of

magnetic optical changeable pigments and inks worldwide.

FYOTEC is an official member of the China Anticounterfeit

Technology Association (CATA), holding a gold medal for

cigarette packaging anti-counterfeit technology and a previous

approved supplier of security inks to the Beijing 2008 Olympic

committee. Application for ISO 9000 accreditation is currently

underway and is expected to be granted later this year.

Growing applications

As interest in holograms as a security feature on Chinese

cigarette packets starts to levels off, so awareness in the use of

optically changeable ink is on the increase with FYOTEC product

now appearing on more than 40 brands. Another growing market

for security ink application is the protection of China’s growing

range of quality brands such as wine. China, so often accused of

copying Western products and brand piracy, is increasingly not

only seeing demand for its products such as Great Wall wine but

also the need to protect these brands from the counterfeiters and

organised criminals.

Equally impressive has been the use of FYOTEC ink as the

leading overt security feature on the inside cover of the Hong

Kong passport, which hitherto had been a popular target for ID

fraud and counterfeiting. The use of this ink has certainly

improved security and become an integral component of the

Hong Kong government and security agencies frontline weapon

in the fight against fraud.

The company has invested in three major products which are

being offered directly to the security printer market. The OCEP

Optical Changeable Effect Pigment is the company’s first and

primary product and is an optically changeable powder from

which printing inks can be formulated. It can be supplied in a

number of colour combinations (upwards of 15) exclusive for

security applications, where advanced, easy-to-use features

provide versatility and flexibility for the end-user. What’s more,

the product is lightweight and because it solvent free, can be very

easy to transport and distribute to global markets.

The second option is OCEI Optical Changeable Effect Ink

which constitutes a family of security printing inks especially

formulated in house for the majority of major printing

technologies such as silkscreen, gravure, intaglio, flex and

letterpress.

The third product range is the MagOri Magnetic Optical

Changeable Pigment, which represents a second-generation

breakthrough popular product. While maintaining the traditional

colour changing effects, a magnetic component allows users to

add certain dynamic motions to the print using adjusted and

customised equipment - the magnetic signal detector indicates its

detection of a signal by either emitting a light or audio message.

Not only are the resulting dynamic effects eye-catching additions

to the standard colour changes but they also allow covert

information to be encoded into the ink, providing another added

value security feature.

Fundamental to the notion of any component used for security

applications are the twin considerations of (reliable) quality and

secure supply. The former is addressed through QA supervision

and carefully controlled management and execution, involving

the dedicated measurement of raw materials and regular

monitoring, and the adjustment of equipment used at all stages of

the manufacturing process.

In the last year or so, the highest levels of the Chinese

government have been concerned at the world's perception of

China as a source of cheap goods, often counterfeit. The time has

come to change this perception by encouraging high quality

exports with the ability to exceed customer expectations. With

this in mind, FYOTEC has already introduced quality and

security procedures to satisfy international criteria and meet the

competitive challenges of a global economy.

Secure - or safe - supply, which is often trying to ensure that

product finds its way into the hands of only the bonafide

customers, is assured through the careful and confidential

presales screening and the maintenance of client data and project

records. In other words, the printer, and ultimately the end user,

understands well that responsible control and management of the

supply chain is essential if the credibility of the company and its

products is to be respected.

Wood & Associates International exists to connect cultures,

forming a bridge between China and the west and specializes in

helping technology companies present themselves optimally in

their chosen export markets. The company provides business

development, marketing and sales support to companies wishing

to do business with China or Chinese companies wishing to do

business in the west.
