    Best DesignFROM: Hayley Riggs McGhee

    NOMINATION: Rob Backus

Rob's done lots of great design since he arrived, but several of his covers for Decemberreally went above and beyond. These five were my favorites:

    - His Dec. 6 Bedlam Extra cover, featuring a story on OSU's Kye Staley, made good use

of spot color and found an eye-catching way to tie in the headline and photo.- His Dec. 17 Kobe Bryant centerpiece, which was one of my personal favorites, was

anchored to the Sports masthead in a really unique way, and it just made Kobe seem to

jump off the page at you.- His Trevor Knight centerpiece for Dec. 17 looked really nice and nicely incorporated a

chart that went with the story.

    - His Le'Bryan Nash cover from Dec. 21 took a great portrait shot from Nate and really

made it stand out.- I thought the Dec. 22 bowl preview came out really well. Rob did a great job with the

typography, which is done in a way that's elegant but still really stands out on the page.

    NOMINATION: Nate Billings

The winning touchdown down at Bedlam happened in Nate's corner of the field and hecaptured it. Extreme conditions (15 degrees and wind at kickoff) make it even harder to

get "the play" from sporting events, but Nate layered his clothing, used hand warmers and

some insulated pants he borrowed from me to stay warm and functional.

It's a beautiful feature about a girl who got told one of the worst things anyone can hearwhile at the doctor's office and the family that rallied around her (both her biological

family and the family that was formed by community around her). This story was also a

great example for others looking into incorporate tweets, Instagram photos and Facebookstatuses into a story. It allows the reader to see the story in Lorelei's own words.http://newsok.com/young-oklahoma-city-womans-cancer-brings-bizarre-blessings-and-so-many-reasons-to-believe/article/3917401

Best Online AnythingFROM: Hayley Riggs McGhee

NOMINATION: Scott Wright, Jacob Unruh and Trent Shadid

These guys have been doing a great job all season long, but I wanted to nominate themfor their postgame video interviews on high school football playoff games. Their videos

were a nice addition to our coverage and something I'm sure readers enjoyed. The sceneon the field after big games is always hectic, and for them to take the time to grab aplayer and interview him on video in addition to all the other stuff they have to do

(writing a story on deadline, finishing up their game stats, etc.) is much appreciated.

Special Effort to Improve AccuracyFrom: Hayley Riggs McGhee

    NOMINATION: Ed Godfrey

Ed's made several good catches since he's been helping us with copy editing duties, buthe made a particularly good one the night of the Bedlam game. Our OU report card

referred to the Sooners scoring on a fake punt instead of a fake field goal. Ed wasn'tactually even working that night, but he happened to be reading on his phone, saw it, and

called to let us know. We were able to get it fixed online and for the newspaper.

returns -- the sentence "The Sooners converted 3 of 3 on fourth down, including an 8-

yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal." originally said fake punt instead of fake fieldgoal.

NOMINATION: Steve LackmeyerSteve did much of the planning as well as the lion's share of the reporting and writing for

    the MAPS 20th

anniversary special section that resulted in an excellent look back at howMAPS transformed Oklahoma City. Additionally, Steve worked long and hard with Todd

Pendleton on the centerpiece of the section displaying areas of the city that have

experienced the most MAPS-driven change. He also provided advertising with a lengthylist of potential customers based on his knowledge of the firms that might want to brag on

their MAPS-related work. His responsiveness to other departments (art, design, photo and

advertising) during our weekly planning meetings was key to the success of the effort. Our sister paper in Colorado Springs, where a similar tax-funded redevelopment measureis under consideration, also published a significant amount of Steve's coverage.
