Red Metal: The Copper CountryStrike of 1913 focuses on the 100th anni-versary of an epic labor strike that devas-tated Michigan’s Upper Peninsula CopperCountry and haunts the American labormovement to this day. Among the notableelements of that strike was the death of 73children at a union Christmas party in whatis now Calumet, Michigan. Known as theItalian Hall Disaster, it remains the deadli-est unsolved manslaughter in U.S. history.

The tragedy (attributed to strikebreakersyelling “fire” in a crowded auditorium) wasimmortalized by Woody Guthrie in his bal-lad “1913 Massacre,” performed in the filmby Steve Earle.

More than a century ago, ornithologistFrank Chapman redirected a Christime-timetradition of revelers shooting birds to a newYuletide recreation: counting birds.

From chickadees in New England toEcuador’s musical manakins, to the forestsof Cuba, Counting on Birds visits the habi-tats of these bird species and introduces thepeople dedicated to the National AudubonSociety’s Christmas Bird Count.

This winter, from December 14th, 2013to January 5th, 2014, more than 60,000 vol-unteers throughout the Americas take part in

an adventure that has become a family tra-dition among generations. Families and stu-dents, birders and scientists, armed with bin-oculars, bird guides, and checklists, go outon an annual mission—braving snow, wind,or rain—to take part in the Christmas BirdCount. Audubon and other organizationsuse data collected in this longest-runningwildlife census to assess the health of birdpopulations and to help guide conservationaction.

It’s not too late to participate in thisyear’s Christmas Bird Count in NewMexico. For more information, just visithttp://www.christmasbirdcount.org.

Frontline presents “From Jesus to Christ:The First Christians,” the epic story of the riseof Christianity. The two-part, four-hour spe-cial transports viewers back 2,000 years to thetime and place where Jesus of Nazareth once

lived and preached. The first two hours trace the life of Jesus of Nazareth, exploring

the message that helped his ministry grow and the events that led tohis crucifixion around 30 C.E. The film then turns to the period thatfollowed Jesus’ death, examining the rise of Christianity and the be-ginning of a rift between Christianity and Judaism.

The second two hours trace the development of the Gospels andexplore the increasingly hostile relationship between the Christiansand the Jews. The film documents the extraordinary events of thesecond and third centuries, when Christianity grew from a small Jew-ish sect to an official religion of the Roman Empire. From the per-secution of Christians to the eventual acceptance of Christianity byEmperor Constantine, the program traces this dramatic evolution—one that would see the cross transformed into a symbol of triumphand Jesus of Nazareth become Jesus Christ.

Frontline “From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians” airs Tuesday,December 24th at 8:00 p.m. (Pts. 1 & 2) and Tuesday, December 31stat 8:30 p.m. (Pts. 3 & 4). On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, December 24th at8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 25th at 11:00 a.m. (Pts. 1 & 2both dates) and Tuesday, December 31st at 8:00 p.m. (Pts. 3 & 4).

How Sherlock Changed the World isa two-hour special about the world’s mostlegendary fictional detective—SherlockHolmes. The special reveals for the firsttime the astonishing impact that Holmes hashad on the development of real criminal in-vestigation and forensic techniques.

Sherlock Holmes is, without doubt, the most famous fictionaldetective the world has ever known. The film shows that ConanDoyle’s hero not only revolutionized the world of fiction, but alsochanged the real world in more ways than many realize. Holmeswas a scientist who used chemistry, fingerprints, and bloodstainsto catch an offender in an era when eyewitness reports and “smok-ing gun” evidence were needed to convict criminals, and policeincompetence meant that Jack the Ripper stalked the streets freely.

In many ways, the modern detective can be seen as a direct ex-tension of Conan Doyle’s literary genius. The program tells the truestories of the scientists, detectives, and even criminals who wereinspired or influenced by the legend of Holmes. The program ex-plores real crimes that were solved, thanks to a piece of equipmentHolmes used, a technique he popularized or invented, or even hismethod of reasoning.

How Sherlock Changed the World airs Tuesday, December17th at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, December 20th at 10:00 p.m. OnHD3-1, it airs Tuesday, December 17th at 8:00 p.m. and Wednes-day, December 18th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
